The Crash in Metepec (no) & Naucalpan, Los Ingobernables in Mexico, Shocker, MDA lineup changes, XMW

a Volador win

I’m aiming to resume a normal schedule tomorrow, but I expect to be swamped when I get back to work and maybe that’s not a realistic goal. Recaps might be a few days off, though I think there’s a roundup post I skipped that may show up first. I think I’ve got over 120 posters to type thru, but not tonight.

The Crash

The Crash show on Thursday in Metepec was canceled. It was canceled about an hour after the show was supposed to start, at 8pm. Our group got there around 7:40, with people waiting in line and getting restless. They were doing the meet & greet, though the article notes it was about an hour and half late. Doors opened around 8:30. The show still hadn’t started by 9, but it just seemed like a normal late lucha/Mexico thing. It wasn’t until The Crash personal took their canvas off the ring that it was clear the show was in trouble. The wrestler bus was parked next to the arena at one moment, then gone the next. There was eventually a very brief announcement by, I think, a local lucha commissioner that the show was canceled but most of the people had started filing out by then.

The Crash quickly put out a statement explaining they were working with a local promoter for this show (the same as is the case for all the non-Tijuana shows), the local promoter did not make good on what he said he would pay The Crash, and the Crash decided to leave. Attendance didn’t seem bad – in the same range of about 800 as in Queretaro a couple nights prior – though the local promotion had said they were hoping to have 3000 for the show and perhaps needed that many to pay the bill. (Tickets were more expensive in Metepec, though costs were definitely higher too – this show was supposed to be Rey Mysterio’s first match in the city in years.)

The Crash listed Emmanuel Jacome as the local promoter. That’s the given name of luchador Astro (formerly Astro Rey Jr.), who deleted his Facebook account as the show was going. He did not appear to be on the scene when everything went down, and was not the guy at the ticket booth surrounded by angry fans after the show didn’t take place. We were told that situation turned violent sometime after we left, but can’t confirm it. Everyone was supposed to get refunds but it definitely didn’t seem like that was possible that night.

One positive note: we got to shake hands a person who was later explained to be former luchador Astro de Plata. Astro de Plata was a promising young luchador who briefly wrestled in AAA before suffering a severe neck/spine injury on an indie match which left him briefly paralyzed. He recovered, and came back for one very safe match earlier this year (against Astro, who he’s friends with but not related.) You wouldn’t have known he went thru all that seeing him at that show, he looked like a normal young man. The injury ended his wrestling career but doesn’t seem to have affected the rest of his life, thankfully.

1) Astrolux, Atomic Star, Pegazus b Black Dragón, Látigo, Tiago

The Crash vs LLyP
3) Keyra, Lacey Lane, Máscarita Dorada b Christi Jaynes, Demus 3:16, Tiago
4) Daga b Último Ninja
Ultimo Ninja replaced Keith Lee.
5) Carlito, Jack Evans, M-ximo b Bestia 666, Black Taurus, Hijo de Pirata Morgan
Jack pinned Bestia.
6) Flamita & Mr. 450 b The King & Willie Mack
best match of the night. Flamita beat Rey Fenix.
7) Penta Zero M b Garza Jr.La Máscara
Penta won with a foul on Garza Jr. Garza was wrestling with a serious shoulder injury and bled a lot. Penta challenged Garza to a super libre rematch.

The building wasn’t quite full here, but somewhere in the 80-90% range. There were less people here than in Monterrey, but it outdrew the Queretaro and more than Metepec looked to be drawing before the cancellation. Konnan appeared after the second match to thank the fans and announce a 2018 return to the building.

This show fit the usual Crash formula: a really heated main event with some strong matches underneath. Garza wrestled in a giant shoulder brace for most of the match (only taking it off at the end, maybe so all the blood pouring down his face wouldn’t get on it.) La Mascara did most of the rudo work and Garza did most of the taunting. A healthy rudo Garza is a better version of La Mascara, and they mostly worked together as one guy here. Penta seems to challenge for a super libre or a lucha extrema match to end every show.

Semimain started slow but built and built. They’ve been spreading out the wins on the tour and I still wasn’t believing Flamita had a chance here until he hit the 450. There’s an ingrained distinction between the regular people on the roster who are part of one of the factions as being the real stars and the other guys (even as great as Flamita) who are just every one else. I don’t know if the answer is more results like this, or if they ought to go Dragon Gate-like and create enough groups that pretty much everyone is part of one team or another.

Daga/Ultimo Ninja didn’t click, and neither man has great personalities unless they’re playing heavy rudo. I’m not sure why Ninja didn’t do so here. (Garza Jr. being in his corner might have helped.) They weren’t left with great options with who they had when Keith Lee didn’t make it – I know they tried to bring in at least one surprise name but it didn’t work out. I don’t recall if this made the podcast, but Rob suggested that maybe Keyra should’ve been Daga’s opponent. I don’t know how that would’ve gone, or if she would’ve wanted to do it, but the crowd would’ve reacted big to it if presented right.

Keyra didn’t accomplish all that much in the match she was in. The mixed tag started with Dorada trying to do kiss spots with Christi, and then led into Demus trying to do kiss spots with both of the women on the other side. I don’t know if it counts as creepy intergender, but it definitely felt like normally good wrestlers not really going for a good match. It got better later, with Lane’s springboard dive and Jaynes moonsault, but was easily the match to skip on the show.

The crowd was into both openers. There were some slips – like, Arkangel literally slipped while running because he was trying to run so hard – but a lot of fun stuff too.

+Lucha posted about The Crash from Salamanca, but with sparse details – you can tell the card was changed around, but you can’t tell who’s in almost all of the matches. (It’s nearly not worth the effort the way they’re doing it.) The main event finish was no finish, with LA Park and Hijo de LA Park making surprise appearances to attack everyone.

CMLL

Shocker was let out of jail after three hours after agreeing to pay 20,000 to a hotel for damages to the room he was staying in. Friends of Shocker say this was an extortion attempt all along and the violence to the sex worker was an attempt to create leverage. Others aren’t sure, and everyone agrees that is he’s dealing with a lot of issues. The women disappearing along the way can be read either as part of the extortion plot or a sex worker deciding it’s not in her best interest to work with the legal system. Shocker is based in Mexico City, so him needing a hotel room for there night says there’s a least something more to this story.

CMLL appears to have taken no action. I do not believe Shocker was suspended Friday night; I didn’t get the full story, but my impression is Shocker just wasn’t there and CMLL scrambled to find someone as as last second replacement. (That’s why the family vs family rule was broken.) I assume that’s the same thing that happened with his missed show on Puebla. It may mean CMLL believes the story was Shocker being extorted, because everyone had to know about it on Friday. He was listed on Tuesday’s show, though that might have happened by the time you read this.

Brazo de Plata did an interview talking about Shocker’s issues with alcohol, but also saying hes’ never seen Shocker wrestle drunk. This is treated as a big revelation, but Shocker’s talked about his issues over the years, and it came up in the El Luchador TV series.

1) Akuma & Templario b Magia Blanca & Robin
Templario and Magia Blanco’s friday debut. Rudos took 1/3.

3) La Jarochita, Lady Maravilla, Marcela b Amapola, La Metálica, Reyna Isis

4) Niebla Roja b Stuka Jr. [lightning]
Roja used a cradle near the ropes to win. Stuka argued Niebla Roja used the ropes, which didn’t appear to be the case.
5) Cavernario, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas DQ Puma, Sam Adonis, Terrible
Puma replaced Shocker. Straight falls, Adonis fouling Casas, then hanging him with his flag.
6) Marco Corleone, Mistico, Valiente b Cuatrero, Sansón, Último Guerrero

This was an entertaining show live, even with missing most of the opener. Matches 2 & 6 are stuff I would’ve breezed thru on a recap but still worked live, and they tried to make the women’s match something. Roja/Stuka didn’t really work.

The Adonis/Casas came off stronger than it has in recent weeks. Guess it could be a live thing.

4) Euforia, Luciferno, Mephisto b Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Titán
rudos took 1/3
5) Diamante Azul, Marco Corleone, Volador Jr. b Kamaitachi, Naito, Rush
Rush laid down in the third fall to give the win to Volador as part of his push to recruit him to Naito & Kamaitachi making a one night appearance. Volador still did not say yes. Pierroth joined the three rudos in the match for a group Los Ingobernables match.

There was a set up to something big happening here, and instead they just kept the story running in place. It still feels like the payoff is someone besides Volador joining Los Ingobernables – and it does sound like there’s been talk of adding someone to make it a trio again – but there’s no idea of when that might actually happened.

This is a weird comparison but I’m going to try to make it anyway. The people behind the current version of the NWA were handed a relatively unknown and unmarketable old Texas indie wrestler as their champion and, thru inventive and modern marketing, have been able to make at least a portion of internet wrestling fans care about his title matches. I’m not convinced about exactly how many people will care enough to watch him again, but it’s much more than before the marketing campaign. They’ve made a lot of a little. CMLL was handed something here: Naito & Kamaitachi were each essentially taking a vacation day to Mexico and working CMLL because they liked working there. I don’t think CMLL paid to fly them in, don’t think they paid them anything extra to come, they just put two of the more popular wrestlers in the world on the show, and didn’t take advantage of it. It was too much for them to flip the YouTube switch or point a phone at the ring for about 20 minutes. They just had a match. That’s taking a lot and making little of it.

Los Ingobernables yelled at a camera. Not a CMLL one.

The main event doesn’t sound like a typical Volador match. He’s done plenty of those, so that might be for the best.

Roshfans gave a car to CMLL. If I understood the story correctly, they did this last year too, and the wrestlers (and maybe the staff?) entered into a raffle to see who got it. Last year, Tiffany won. This year, Tirantes won.

MMA promotion XFL debuts in Arena Mexico on 12/09 (a Saturday.) One of the benefits of doing this forever is I had this vague impression there was an MMA show in Arena Mexico before, so I googled mma Arena Mexico and came up with my own blog post writing about this in 2009.

Other

Word around Arena Naucalpan was Elite would be running their on 12/09. Yes, the same Elite as before, though it’s a local promoter running the show in this case. This is a not one off, and other stuff going on indicated they plan on putting together a roster again and running shows. I have no idea about TV. I expect there will be some sort of announcement about this in the next week or so.

MDA had a weekend. Their card for Sunday had to be completely redone, following CMLL pulling all their wrestlers. CMLL wasn’t happy with Dragon Lee and Mistico on opposite sides of a match, and don’t want other groups to do Mistico/Caristico. (Lucha Libre Boom gets an exception there.) It might not just be that; there are rumors of CMLL changing to a different promoter in Monterrey. Still, the way this was done hurt everyone. Maybe CMLL will make it up to the top guys booked, but for someone like Tiffany – who was probably headed to a hair match payoff against Sexy Star based on both of them being from Monterrey – there’s no easy way to make good.

There was word around Monterrey as early as Monday that MDA’s card would be rebooked. They didn’t announce the changes until Friday, and I’m guessing it just took that long for them to figure out who they’d have. They heavily promoted the new lineup, and seem to be happy with what they drew.

I assumed CMLL pulling the guys off that show meant the Alberto/Rush match for MDA this upcoming weekend would be off too. As of last word, it’s still on. People in CMLL notice the double standards with Rush and seem a little frustrated with it, though there’s not much they can do about it at the moment. It’s not just treating stars different; remember, Volador, Mistico and Caristico were on the original lineup that got pulled. There’s nothing anyone else can do about it right now, but that sort of situation leads to discontent over the long term.

4) Ant Khan & Dr. Karonte Jr. b Argos & Hijo Del Villano III
Ant Khan looked untrained or barely trained, and the other three tried to limit his participation as much as possible. Magnus and Argos switched matches. Karonte beat Villano 3.
5) Black Silver, Súper Ciudadano, Tigre Rojo b Arkángel de la Muerte, Douki, Patán
6) Diamante & Sam Adonis b Magnus & Último Dragón
Adonis used a foul to win.

This was a simple show but entertainingly enough. These are very family crowd, who react easily for everything and really got into the main event. (Someone had the bright idea to give away foam balls, which were thrown at Adonis during and after the match.)

Ant Khan (or maybe Kahn?) came off as a guy who bought a spot on the show, looked totally overwhelmed and occasionally frightened by what was going on, and Karonte wrestled most of the match himself. But now he gets to say he wrestled in Mexico, so maybe it was worth it.

Fiero is as promising on the small indie shows as he is on Arena Mexico.

7) Demente Extreme b TóxicoÁngel o Demonio

I thought this was alright (or at least the part we saw – we skipped out on the main event as it became a mindless weapon shot bit so we could eat dinner), but everyone I was with seemed very disappointed with this XMW compared to previous ones.

Centvrion/Metaleon was probably the best match of the night, but it had some errors and was uncomfortable violent at times. They wanted an brutal match and did it, but it led to so many chair shots to the head that didn’t mean anything; I was distracted by being concerned for their luchadors safety to get into the match, and the crowd wasn’t reacting with the level of intensity as the wrestlers. (It also had the comedy of the promotion pulling the chairs away from the wrestlers whenever they let it out of their reach; they were very concerned about any of them getting broken, but the wrestlers kept trying to use them.) Mamba/Yoruba had a similar feel, where the AAA exotico wanted to have a hard hitting match in his old style against a familiar opponent and did exactly that, but the crowd didn’t care nearly as much about the match as the people into it. It was a good size crowd for the building but not one that was all that into the matches.

Talavision, a t-shirt creator, celebrated 11 years of business with an autograph signing. Penta, Daga, La Mascara and Rush were there. The store is tucked away a bit in the Historic Center of Mexico City but worth a quick stop if you can get there.

Violento Jack won the King of Freedom Championship for a second time on Monday in Korakuen Hall, which is his last match there for now. I suspect his DTU match with Jun Kasai will now be a title defense.

The former Sexy Star says she’s not interested in AAA and totally unconcerned with the Reina de Reinas championship belt. She says that since Martha Villalobos endorsed her (in the staged setup after the title match), that means she’s proven she’s the best and no one else mattered. It remains odd that AAA didn’t say anything negative about her while stripping the title belt; she was always going to win the perception battle that way. It makes sense if she’s going back to AAA some day. She’s insistent here that won’t happen. Dulce’s doing a lot of TV work on Multimedios; nothing that has happened has hurt her TV appeal in her home city, and says she wants to wrestle more.

Lineups

CMLL (FRI) 11/17/2017 Arena México
1) Súper Muñeco, Súper Pinocho, Súper Ratón vs Gallego, Mr. Cóndor, Rocky Santana
2) Blue Panther Jr., Guerrero Maya Jr., The Panther vs Hechicero, Misterioso Jr., Sagrado
3) Solar I & Súper Astro vs Black Terry & Virus
4) Blue Panther, Mano Negra, Octagón vs Fuerza Guerrera, Negro Casas, Satánico
5) Dragón Lee, Rush, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero
6) Dos Caras Sr., Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Villano IV vs Canek, Cien Caras, Máscara Año 2000

The threatened legends show. This should draw fine because everything is not about how good the matches is, but the main event in particular looks dreadful and is in just under the wire for the WON Worst Match of the Year consideration. It also seems to confirm Villano IV’s not full time with AAA any more (and probably hasn’t been for a while), or he wouldn’t be used.

Match 2/5 are good match with the usual people, probably purposefully set up to be good knowing how the rest could go. The third match could be pretty good, though Super Astro doesn’t wrestle much now. I’d suspect we’ll see his son accompany him.

An earlier version of this lineup had Skayde instead of Super Raton. I’m not sure what happened there.

5) Omar Brunetti, Star Black, Vaquero Jr. vs El Chakal, Maléfico, Nautilius

I’m not sure if the semimain is a relevos increibles or if I missed turns. I probably should stop posting Sunday Guadalajara lineups if nothing comes out from them and no one’s making it to Mexico City from here with any great frequency.

CMLL (MON) 11/20/2017 Arena Puebla
1) Ares & Millenium vs Ares & Guerrero Espacial

5) Ángel de Oro, Dragón Lee, Soberano Jr. vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón
6) Diamante Azul, Rush, Valiente vs Máscara Año 2000, Negro Casas, Último Guerrero

This is not a legends show but Mascara 2000 is main eventing all the same. Semimain looks good. Second match could be a really good minis match.

5) Blue Panther, Canek, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Cien Caras, Máscara Año 2000, Satánico

A Universo 2000 benefit show, rescheduled due to the earthquake.

The Crash (FRI) 12/15/2017 Teziutlan, Puebla
1) Astrolux, Pegazus, Torito Negro (Estado de México) vs Black Metal (IWRG), Látigo, Tiago
2) Flamita & Willie Mack vs Bestia 666 & Mr. 450
3) La Máscara & Pierroth vs Carlito & Máximo
4) Penta Zero M vs Rush vs Garza Jr.
5) Daga, Rey Mysterio Jr., The King vs Brian Cage, Ricochet, Sammy Guevara

This is two tours away, so the real thing we can draw for it is Ricochet is working a series of shows and not just the TJ date. Main event and second match look good, third match looks like a struggle. Carlito was over for his entrance (still using his WWE music) and seemed like a amiable guy, but doesn’t do much in the ring for a promotion all about doing stuff. His biggest plus is he’s a star to fans who may watch anyone but WWE, but that’s less valuable when Rey’s working shows. (OTOH, it’s not like there’s anyone who could go into his spot to make that match look good.)
