What Happened: They actually give weights in title match. Cavernario is 92 kg, Niebla Roja is 92.5.

Mephisto replaced Negro Casas.

Sagrado unmasked Blue Panther Jr. for the DQ

Thoughts:

double jump headscissors

Niebla Roja is going to be more successful unmasked. He’s got a personality that he couldn’t get across though his mask, and it really helps him as a tecnico. His wrestling hasn’t improved all that match. This was a good match, but not among Cavernario’s best with other técnicos. Roja doesn’t bring the fantastic spots as others, and he doesn’t do something else to take that place. It’s partly his environment, the dives that are about run of the mill in CMLL would stand out more elsewhere but don’t here – he’s really become closer to being a clone of his brother in that way. The length of the third fall helped give it some drama, and it was still a worthwhile title match. It just definitely wasn’t great, and something that was lesser for watching it twice. When the main event style is simply do a lot of moves, the people with the less impressive moves lose out.

The semimain became a lot easier to bypass once Mephisto was in Negro Casas space. Rush seemed to like fighting Mascara 2000 for whatever reason. This was not good even in fast forward.

The fourth match wasn’t Blue Panther and Hechicero fighting each other forever and so was a failure. (Hehichero really wanted to do that, you could tell, but they just did a spot or two there until the end game.) Angel de Oro leaping over nothing at all was an indication of the effort level. Polvora didn’t have a good night. This picked up late.

Fuego tope

The tercera were the usual names doing their usual match well. It felt a little bit too much usual to me to stand out, and the DQ came out of nowhere, but I could understand people liking this a bit more than me. The second fall finish was exciting, and the match was going well at the end until the unmasking.

I must not be well, because I really liked the segunda. The pace was good, there was nice action, and they did the slightest Star/Raziel issue to give the match something to build towards. Raziel torturing Star Jr. as a taller version of Virus was amusing, and the rudo killed the tencico with his finish at the end. The first fall also didn’t go to the form, with guys being counted of usual spots, which was a surprising level of effort. These guys are having the corner dropkick to land well, or they had trouble not actually nailing people and now they’re pulling it short and it doesn’t look good. Magnus was sharp and I want the lightning match with him and Akuma to exist. Astral has random moments of smoothiness. Raziel & Cancerbero were into this match, which made a lot of difference. I was glad I didn’t skip this, which isn’t a frequent thing with CMLL segundas.
