The Crash: 2017-07-14

blind tope

Recapped: 10/16/2017

All matches taped from Auditorio de Tijuana on 07/14/2017.

Starting with this group, I’m watching The Crash matches via Konnan’s Patreon. These matches are single cam handheld versions. They’re inside the guardrail and so can follow the action a lot better when it moves it around, but it’s not what you’d expect from a normal promotion. The later ones are from are closer to pro shot and easily worth the $5/month fee, these handhelds are more arguable. I was really tired of looking at the back of people’s heads so this worked for me.

The Santo/Daga vs Garza/Maximo video did not seem to work, so that one I watched elsewhere. You probably don’t need to make that effort.

Matches:

Arkángel Divino, Black Boy, Último Panda beat Eli Everfly, Famous B, Último Maldito
(14:13, Arkangel Divino 450 splash Eli Everfly, good, via Patreon
)

Oráculo & Serpentico beat Black Danger & Jonathan
(7:58, DQ for Black Danger unmasking Oraculo, ok, via Patreon
)

Rey Horus & The King beat Hanson & Raymond Rowe and Sami Callihan & Shane Strickland
(20:32, The King Mexican Destroyer Raymond Rowe, good, via Patreon)

Jack Evans beat Bestia 666 in a super libre match
(13:51, Jack Evans backslide, good via Patreon)

Garza Jr. & M-ximo beat Daga & Santo Jr.
(17:34, DQ when Garza faked a foul, below average, via
MegaKakashi619)

Penta Zero M beat La Máscara, Jeff Cobb, Marty Scurll
(11:58, Pentagon package piledriver Marty Scurll, good, via Patreon)

What happened:

Danger & Oraculo talked up their mask match after Black Danger unmasked Oraculo. Garza messed with Daga a bit. Jack and Bestia continued towards their mask match, but there weren’t much in the way of angles on this one.

Thoughts:

Cobb is strong

The main event was more of an all star match than one with a lot of seriousness. Everyone did their own taunt, and then later someone else’s taunt. That sort of thing. They did well enough in what they did but no one felt at the top of their game. The crowd liked the novelty of seeing Scurll and he gave them enough for his signature spots that I think they were satisfied. Penta needing a foul after a long ref bump was weird, and he came off more rudo-ish than normal.

not even close
Garza and Maximo seem to be done with him at this point

Nieto del Santo isn’t any good. Maybe he’ll get there some day, but he doesn’t appear close in the semifinal. There’s a lot of stalling and fooling around here, and it comes off as if they knew they had to get around the handicap of having someone not ready for this position. Maybe it was nerves, because he looked better in his previous match in TJ, and here he was messing up stuff in embarrassing fashion. The crowd turns on him halfway thru. The other three tried, but it wasn’t working – Daga messed up his own submission on his first try, and the referee died for about a minute and a half before getting up and calling the DQ. Go out of your way not to see this one.

balance on that rail doesn’t seem easy
Oraculo probably regretting a decision he made

The super libre match took advantage of the stipulation to do something different with the weapons and the interference. It came off as a serious personal rivalary, even with the interference. Oraculo’s overshot dive looked like it really sucked for him. The finishing reversals were a nice touch.

pizza DDT
surprised Fenix didn’t go thru the buckle somehow

I liked the three way tag, but I’m guessing not as much as others. The first half seemed off with me, lacking impact at points. Strickland & Horus had an early exchange that seemed more like a dance than a fight, War Machine would set up for a hard hitting move that wouldn’t end up that hard, it just kind of seemed like a b-night. It got better and they did so much that it was hard to deny it, and the crowd obviously liked it enough to toss money in. Fenix & Horus had some good work together and Strickland looked good. It was not my favorite match even as I knew it was a good one.

no
this looked better at least

The 2v2 segunda didn’t really work. The start was hot, but the two teams didn’t have great chemistry with each other. Jonathan especially didn’t mesh well with the Florida team, with some bumpy looking action. The action itself didn’t particularly work for the match. I couldn’t remember which guy was feuding with Black Danger until the finish, because they didn’t really push the 1v1 rivalry during the match. It was a lot of everyone doing stuff.

Arkangel and Ultimo Maldito still can do their thing well
poor B
Panda legdrop

The opener was a lot of Último Maldito & Arkangel Divino doing their usual bits with the other four around them. Último Panda obviously stood out. The comedy was good, and it’s nice to have something slightly different on this shows (which often feel like six attempts at the same style of match with different levels of success), but it did feel like it went a long time without anyone else getting involved. It definitely worked as an opening match bit and the crowd got into him as a character more than anyone else. Eli was the other new guy here, who’s done well elsewhere but didn’t totally stick out here. I think he does better later on.

Ricky Marvin out of AAA, The Crash plans, LU contracts

a win

This show didn’t sound good outside of Soberano’s performance. The Voldaor/Cavernario stuff last week wasn’t followed up on.

There’s not a lot more interesting coming on today’s Arena Mexico show. CMLL hypes it as the last show of the month and the last show before Dia de Muertos, which is not an exactly exciting sell. The most interesting match is probably a seven minute one, as Zeuxis faces Lady Maravilla. Maravilla had good performances before coming to CMLL, but has only shown a little of it since her debut. Facing Zeuxis is her best opportunity to do a little more.

Last week was the Niebla Roja/Cavernario title match, and there’s no other new big story here yet. Sunday’s regular lineup says CMLL feels no urgency to have big main events for the Dia del Muertos show, so I would not expect anything big there. The main event is Hijos del Infierno vs Angel de Oro, Marco Corleone, and Niebla Roja. Soberano is back, teaming with Panther, Guerrero Maya against Rey Bucanero, Terrible and Vangellys. The Panther Brothers team with Johnny Idol versus Sagrado, Disturbio and Misterioso. The show has a minis match with Electrico, Shockercito, Stukita versus Mercurio, Pequeno Olimpico and Pierrothito and opens with Flyer & Magia Blanca & Apocalipsis & Cholo.

Again, the show will be an hour later – 8:30pm – this one time only.

CMLL & ROH announced Esfinge & Rey Cometa are working the ROH 11/17 San Antonio and 11/18 Dallas Survival of the Fittest shows. Misterioso & The Panther worked these shows last year.

Naito is teasing the idea of visiting Mexico in November.

Ricky Marvin announced on Facebook late Monday that he’s done in AAA. He’s looking to pick up independent bookings. Marvin was not listed on any upcoming TV tapings, and his last appearance would’ve been as part of the domed cage match at Heroes Inmortales. The original plan for the cage match seemed to be setting up Marvin losing, but then the teams of Poder del Norte and Aerostar/Drago/Raptor were added to the match during the show and Tito Santana lost instead. Marvin came into AAA on a hot indie run after leaving NOAH and is leaving the promotion colder, but his international recognition should help him get going. Ricky will probably wrestle for upper level indie groups (and maybe The Crash), but he also should be in a guy in demand for seminars and advice from the guys who work those groups, since he’s been the places they’d like to be.

AAA has been promoting the main event of Friday’s TV taping in Queretaro as Rey Escorpion versus Psycho Clown. The card lists it as a three way with Texano, and I wonder if that’s somehow a quiet acknowledgement Teaxno won’t be there. Maybe he’ll already be in Ontario for the Impact tapings by that. That would also mean the semimain would have to change, since Pagano’s probably going to Impact too. It also could just be AAA being random and Texano being moved into a different match without AAA explaining it.

Something’s changed with the Lucha Underground wrestler contract status again. Originally, the idea was no one under contract to LU could appear on any other US based wrestling show. Then, Lucha Libre FMV (which manages the contracts and is run by Dorian Roldan) seemed to allow people to appear on Impact, but it seemed to be only available to those people who were good terms with AAA. Those who walked out of AAA couldn’t work Impact, but even those LU people who never were part of AAA seemed unable to appear on TV. (This apparently is what led to Ricochet not wrestling on the NJPW US shows, and his speaking part being edited out later.) Now, it looks like Impact is able to use those guys – LU workers who weren’t part of AAA – on their TV. PW Insider says Sami Callihan will debut on their upcoming tapings, and that Impact tried to recruit Ricochet but turned down (because Ricochet has obviously been going to WWE since last June and isn’t going to screw that up, but it was worth a shot.) There’s no way Impact is going to put someone on TV unless they’re allowed to be on TV, so something’s changed with Callihan and Ricochet’s status.

It could be that LU/Lucha Libre FMV have softened their stance even more when it comes to allowing people on Impact now that there’s no TV show on the air, and possibly no TV show on the air ever again. Or maybe because Impact’s a Canada based show now, they’re not bound by the same rules? All I know for sure is Callihan is obviously showing up, because it was teased heavily on TV and all the guys he normally works with have shown up in Impact lately.

The reason this matters on the lucha side immediately is it appeared Johnny Mundo was still working in AAA primarily because it allowed Johnny Impact and Taya to get some work on Impact, and that wouldn’t be available to them if he walked on AAA. Johnny’s been more professional than most would be in his circumstance, so I would guess he might still stick around until the scheduled end of his run. But that might be his choice now rather than his obligation. (Or, these contracts could continue be applied very differently in different situations – that seems to be the one consistent thing about them by now.)

This all becomes moot if/when LU is canceled, and really important if/when LU S4 is picked up. There’s still nothing official. El Rey’s deadline to renew will come at some point, sooner than later, and everything continues to be on hold until the deadline pressure forces a decision.

126F Pro Wrestling Magazine has a bunch of quotes from The Crash’s Nacho de la O. I assume there was a press conference for Saturday’s Tijuana show yesterday. The latest story in the never ending quest for TV is the pilot has been delivered, The Crash is hoping to hear back within three weeks, and they hope to be airing shows by the end of the year.

The tag team titles are vacant. Nacho said there would be a match for the vacant championship on the 11/06 Nuevo Laredo show between the Lucha Brothers, War Machine and the team of Mecha Wolf & Willie Mack. (The current chard has Wolf & Mack in a singles match and Bestia & Taurus in that match.) Nacho also explained The Hardy Boys will be coming back to The Crash in two years, just as soon as their WWE contracts are done. They’re going to have new/better belts for the winners.

The Crash would like to expand their deal with CMLL, and very specifically bring in Dragon Lee. They’re working at bringing in Kenny Omega & Will Ospreay in the first quarter of 2018.

They say they’re running Tennessee in November (?) and have plans to run in the US in 2018, but they’re going to take their time on that. They’re already announced for New Orleans for WM week, but that didn’t seem to be mentioned.

DTU announced Violento Jack vs GCW’s Jimmy Lloyd on 12/03.

IWRG is posting videos on Castillo del Terror entrants. The one on mystery newcomer Capo del Norte lists him as a 6 year vet, trained by Navarro, Terry, Bucanero and Morgan, and wrestled in IWRG, Puerto Rico and AULL.

Nicho is listed on the 12/17 Mucha Lucha Alantis show, which would be his return or close to it.

In Arena Aficion, Vulcano Jr. & Angel Azul took Copernico’s mask and Esquimal I’s hair. Copernico is Miguel Garcia, from Mexico State, 51 years old, 30 years a wrestler.

Arlequin Negro took Coco Amarillo’s hair in a cage match.

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania.

Segunda Caida checks out Imposible vs Relampago.

Box Y Lucha’s year end awards ceremony are 12/04. These come with a party, and usually controversy about very unfamiliar luchadors winning awards (with suspicions Box Y Lucha is essentially selling the awards.)

Lineups

CMLL (MON) 11/06/2017 Arena Puebla
1) Lestat, Rey Samuray, Tigre Rojo Jr. vs Fuerza Chicana, Perverso, Policeman
2) La Vaquerita, Lady Maravilla, Sanely vs La Comandante, Reyna Isis, Tiffany
3) Johnny Idol, Rey Cometa, Stigma vs El Malayo, Olímpico, Virus
4) Volador Jr. vs Negro Casas [lightning]
5) Mistico, Niebla Roja, Valiente vs Kráneo, Rey Bucanero, Terrible

Maybe Cavernario had some place to be on Monday, because Negro Casas seems like a fill in. A good fill in, but still. This is a shorter card than usual and one not that interesting outside the lightning match.

new lucha videos for the weekend of October 27th, 2017

IWRG Monday continues to be repeats. I didn’t get the AAA show, so we’ll never know if Pagano/Lider/Mesias aired on the long version (but it did turn up on fan cam if you’re really interested.)

I probably will throw stuff up on YouTube the next couple weeks but this post is less a guarantee than usual.
