What happened:

Soberano tornillo

Nothing really. On a low level, CMLL built towards the heavyweight title match they already had announced (Diamante Azul beating Terrible) and set the ground work for two more (Soberano/Mephisto, Guerreros/Sky Team), but nothing was played up much and it’s unlikely those are actually happening. CMLL showed off next week’s title match, and pushed the Dia de Muertos concept hard, and didn’t really do anything else.

Thoughts:

The two trios in the main event picked right up where they left off. The match was good then took off in the third fall to some hectic madness. It was overall a lot smoother than the NGD match, and the pace was more amazing the Soberano one. It wasn’t exactly the same match as before: 2017 Gran Guerrero is easily better than 2016. Last year’s model didn’t have enough offense to wreck all the técnicos like this one did here, and he seemed more confident taking the big técnico spots. He probably could use more singles matches to push him to expand more, but the chances they’ve given Gran Guerrero in 2017 have led him to being a more complete wrestler. (His older brother still out did him with the dive catch bit.) I don’t think they did everything here – Mistico has many more ways to almost die than he got in tonight – so hopefully the outcome does lead to a title match sometime soon.

Cuatrero springboard elbow drop

The semimain was the usual regular match that I didn’t connect to at all. Vangellys spear on Marco looked good. So did Diamante Azul’s german suplex. Those are three sentences.

Lightning match was a total Soberano showcase, giving him a chance to do all his moves and dives. That’s kind of every big Mephisto match: he’ll do a few matches but he’ll mostly just base, and Soberano looked spectacular and fresh enough to make it work. The pace was slower than you’d like from a Soberano match, kind of thanks to the dive and Soberano playing dead outside the guardrail to set up another big move. They were both selling dead in under four minutes. It was probably to pace the match out for close to 10 minutes, and they did pull that off. This match should go somewhere, though I’m not dying to see them again because I’m not sure what’s left to do.

The tercera was leagues better than two matches that preceded it. That’s not saying much, but they were giving time and tried to make it a memorable match. NGD are advanced up to doing their double teams twice, to set up the second one going wrong for the comeback. They have a lot of ideas, even if they’re still working on getting them to work in the context of a match. Esfinge and Cuatrero did not seem to be on the same page. There was some spot the rudo was going to do during the beatdown but instead time just stood still, and they seemed off when they were back together in the third fall. The set up to the second set of triple dives seemed weird too, with the técnicos milling about doing nothing waiting for the rudos to get in position. Neither of these were dealbreakers, but places where they can still improve.

Sky Team

The women’s match looked rough on paper and lived up to those expectations. Vaquerita’s dive looked like it was going bad the whole way and ended worse. She was taking a million little steps and that seems like the wrong way to go about it. Reina Isis seems like Marcela’s personal project of an opponent. It’s good to see someone trying, and Reina Isis was at least definitely no longer the worse person in this match. She slows down before doing every move, though, which is hurt the impact. She also doesn’t seem to have all that many moves, another problem.

The opener was a thoroughly boring and useless match with neither side showing much interest. Metalico seemed to mess up breaking up a pin that got Nitro eliminated and the third fall over quicker than usual, so that worked out for the viewer. Stigma’s dive was nice.
