Cavernario fouled Niebla Roja

CMLL picked up Tuesday shows right where they left off: with a largely boring show. If there’s any sentiment to come back from the hiatus strong, it wasn’t seen here.

Cavernario fouling Niebla might have mean they switched the title feud. We may know more when next week’s lineup comes out.

Excelsior talks to some CMLL personal about how they helped out after the earthquake, including many who were on Informa. Referee Edgar dug people out of rumble, Akuma drove supplies to Cuernavaca (and carried them by foot when roadblocks wouldn’t let him in.)

Lucha Underground

Lucha Underground 3×38 (“Ultima Lucha 3 – Part II”) is tonight. Matches on the show

  • a unique opportunity battle royal with Paul London, Saltador, Mala Suerte, Argenis, Cortez Castro, Son of Madness, Vinnie Massaro, The Mack, Joey Ryan, Ricky Mundo, PJ Black, Mascarita Sagrada, and Pimpinela Escarlata
  • Ivelisse vs Catrina (opening clip)
  • Fenix vs Marty the Moth, mask vs hair

People who watched last week’s Hell of War in HD might have noticed there were already blood stains on the mat before Fox or Killshot started bleeding. That was the last match of that Saturday night. These were the first three. Things happen. Nothing is as over the top in the same way as Hell of War, but they’re similar in that things happen in matches which may not be allowed by any other network than El Rey and might not be done in any other wrestling promotion than Lucha Underground.

Ivelisse’s last match on this show was episode 10 of this season. She broke her foot during near the end of the match. This was soon after Jeremiah Crane had debuted, but before Crane and Catrina started teasing a backstory. (LU has said their was a planned relationship all along but the timing of it changed with the injury.)

The show didn’t mention Ivelisse again for most of the rest of the season, with her only coming up in a couple of YouTube promos along the way. My theory has been LU wasn’t sure if she would make it back by this match, but they must’ve had some clue because they didn’t start setting up an alternate match for this spot. She appeared to be unhampered by the injury.

I thought the battle royal was a dark match live, and then I was confused by why Dario was involved with a dark match. Don’t listen to me.

CultIcon has a preview of the show.

FWIW, that audition for a (slightly) lucha libre show that wasn’t Lucha Underground and also isn’t Masked Republic. I do not think it’s a traditional wrestling promotion, since they’d probably go thru people they know instead of a casting call, and word would’ve gotten out about it before the casting call. This seems like a TV production group going into wrestling (with maybe an ex-WWE or Impact name behind the scenes name involved to include the PPV experience.)

Lucha World Cup

The bracket was announced for the 10/10 Lucha World Cup

Quarterfinal 1: Pagano & Psycho Clown vs Cody Hall & Quiet Storm
Quarterfinal 2: Mil Muertes & Vampiro vs Nosawa & Kendo Kashin
Quarterfinal 3: Marty Martinez & Son of Havoc vs Taiji Ishimori & Hi69
Quarterfinal 4: DJZ & Andrew Everett vs Aerostar & Drago

Semifinal 1: Quarterfinal 1 vs Quarterfinal 2
Semifinal 2: Quarterfinal 3 vs Quarterfinal 4

Final:
(not sure if they’re doing a Third Place game)

They’ve also changed the tiebreaker format. These matches still have a 10 minute time limit. If there’s no winner, then each side picks one person for a 3 minute tie breaker match. (That’s changed from 5.) If there’s still no winner, then the other two people wrestler. This part is how they’ve done it the last two years, with the idea that they would cycle back around to first group of people if there was still no decision. It never got that far, but that was the idea. This time, if there’s still no finish, they’ll have a judging panel decide the winner. The judges are Dorian Roldan, Gran Hamada, Tatsumi Fujinami, Tsutomu Shimizu (Dr. Lucha) and Scott D’Amore.

Pagano & Psycho Clown are the favorites. Taiji Ishimori & Hi69 is the team that has the best chance of upsetting as the home country team. Ishimori, Psycho and Mil Muertes (under two names) are the only people to be in all three of these matches. Mexico & USA have won, but Japan has never reached the final.

Again, this show will air on SamuraiTV later in October, and probably will air on AAA TV in early November. There was a belief this show would air live on Twitch at one point, but there’s been no official mention of that and it now seems unlikely to occur. There will be a press conference to introduce the Mexican contingent on Saturday.

I set up a Lucha World Cup Bracket Pick’em.

Other Notes

There’s no IWRG show today. It must be back to being September.

A press conference was held for the 10/20 AAA TV taping in Metepec. The only thing of note is the local promoter (Juan José Herrera) said the show will actually have seven matches, not the six listed on the poster.

Riot’s 11/04 show in Arena LLF has it’s first match

Aeroboy talks about extreme lucha.

A lucha libre themed animation short aired on El Rey as part of it’s animation marathon.

Reina Isis is wrestling in Texas on 10/14.

Core won the NXW King of the Death Matches.
