CMLL Puebla: 2017-03-20

check out these hard hitting punches

Recapped: 03/22/2017

King Jaguar, Rey Apocalipsis, Toro Bill Jr. defeated Meyer, París, Vega (rudos 2/3, 13:43 [6:39, 3:36, 2:49], ok, video link)

Cancerbero, Policeman, Raziel defeated Espíritu Maligno, Rey Samuray, Zaeta Roja (rudos 2/3, 14:44 [7:16, 3:11, 3:50], ok, video link)

Zeuxis defeated Princesa Sugehit in a lightning match
(Zeuxis cradle, 5:48, ok,
video link)

Dragón Rojo Jr., Kráneo, Luciferno defeats Lestat, Rey Cometa, Stigma
(rudos 1/3, 16:09 [5:11, 3:20, 7:05], ok, video link)

Diamante Azul, Mr. Niebla, Terrible defeated La Máscara, Pierroth, Rush in a relevos increíbles match
(Team Azul 2/3 [DQ for Pierroth removing Azul’s mask], 12:50 [2:48, 3:51, 6:11], ok,
video link)

Mephisto © defeated Carístico to keep the CMLL World Welterweight Championship
(Mephisto 1/3 [La Caristica blocked into faceslam], 15:40, good,
video link)

What happened:

Vega dropkicked totally out of his stage

There was a marriage proposal (which they almost totally missed in an ad break.) She said yes.

Mephisto cleanly defeated Caristico once again. The finish came off as lame, with Mephisto just blocking La Caristica (Mistica), Caristico falling onto the mat, and Mephisto getting a pin off that.

Zeuxis defeated Sugehit with the same cradle again this week, and asked for a title match. Sugehit pushed the idea of it being a mask match instead. It’ll be a title match.

Policeman and Espiritu Maligno continue to feud, and Maligno even picked up a fall win this time, but still lose cleanly in the end. Perhaps CMLL decided Maligno is an ex-mini and must lose at all times.

Vega cool armdrag

Pierroth unmasked Azul, again.

Dragon Rojo replaced Morphosis, who may or may not still be a CMLL luchador at this point. He hasn’t been back since he lost his mask and wasn’t around much prior to it.

Rey Cometa was stretchered out after a Kraneo running hipcheck to the head. This appeared to be a real injury (replay show some whiplash) but Cometa hasn’t been reported as missing time.

Thoughts: Nothing much special on this Puebla show, and a little bit disappointing.

this is both awful and great at the same time

Caristico/Mephisto tried in the third fall, but it still felt like a lesser version of the singles match we just saw in Arena Mexico. The finish just didn’t work at all, even the announcers were caught off guard by how a minor looking spot was it. The crowd got into the match, but Caristico’s also at the point where it’s tough to believe he’s going to win anything important until he actually does again. It was still the best match on the show, but it was nothing needed to see unless you have to see everything these guys do.

Not much good from the rest. Sugehit/Zeuxis was an ordinary lightning match. Stigma had a dumb moment in his trios match and very much seemed to be carried around. Lestat looked good, will continue to go nowhere. Vega looked good, will continue to go nowhere. Batillon did better than usual and the opener almost worked, but this recent format of short third falls in the first match hurt. At least the fans react to the never ending Ingobernable feud; they’re not into the Policeman/Espiritu stuff at all and weren’t much into Zeuxis/Sugehit either.

Lestat tornillo

I’m skeptical “Pierroth” will continue to be known as Pierroth for long. They’ve changed around his character a lot since he was brought back, and it’s really clear how very little connection the current performer has to the gimmick now that he has no mask. There’s some yellow in his gear, and that’s it. This man’s gimmick is “Rush’s Father”, right down to wearing the same style boots as Rush, and it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense for him to use the name. It’s CMLL, so inertia might mean no change (he’s teaming with an unmasked guy named La Mascara), but it was glaring how extraneous the name is at this point.

Princesa Sugehit has to do a springboard/Asai dive if she and Zeuxis have a mask match. She’s teased it (or more just done a spot to get countered) every single match. I’m not even sure she doing it as a something to pay off forever, but people who watch too much CMLL would go crazy if she did even just a cross body off that springboard.

Giving Terrible something to do is nice, but CMLL seemed to miss the point that rudo is pretty good.

Pierroth shoved the ref and unmasked Rush.

CMLL’s show tonight is an ordinary show, with nothing much on the line. Atlantis, Matt Taven & Valiente face the Guerreros (no UG) in the main event. The best match trios match of the night might be Drone, Guerrero Maya and Maximo versus Puma, Tiger and Terrible. Terrible & Maximo will probably wrestle a lot together, but I’d like to see Terrible face the other guys. Titan versus Bobby Villa will be a good lightning match. Esfinge, Soberano and Triton face Sagrado, Skandalo and Virus, which probably won’t break Triton’s win streak. Vaquerita, Sanely & Silueta are scheduled against Dalys, Metalica and Isis in the women’s match. (CMLL’s preview lists Princesa Sugehit, Skady & Jarochita vs Zeuxis, Amapola and Tiffany, which is Friday’s women’s match.) An all rookie match of Magia Blanca & Sangre Imperial versus El Coyote & Grako opens the show.

CultIcon previews the show. It starts 7:30pm local, though 8:30pm for people in the US. It’ll be on YouTube like normal.

Guadalajara has Caristico, Mistico and Volador against Cavernario, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas. Hechicero replaces Dragon Rojo in the semimain. Dragon Rojo hasn’t indicated why he’s missing the show on his Twitter, but he is working on a Revolucionarios music video.

Okumura is headed back to Japan for treatment on his still injured neck.

Vampiro says he’s off of WrestleCon in Orlando this weekend because he’s decided to be at the Neza taping instead. Vampiro’s been announced for WrestleCon for months, and this Neza taping has been announced for over a month, but it’s portrayed as a conflict that just now came up. I dunno. AAA still isn’t saying anything about Mesias, who’s booked to be both in Orlando and Neza on Friday.

Record writes about Chilean Hector Chavez, who was part of the most recent La Llave de la Gloria tryout and brother of model/singer Daniella Chavez. She’s with Televisa, so AAA might have been encouraged to include Hector in the competition, but he looked pretty decent for a guy I hadn’t seen before in the tryout match. He was on the XMW show back on the 11th (and listed as Romeo there; not sure if that was a mistake or the name he normally wrestles under.)

Lucha Underground airs on Wednesday and Thursday this week on El Rey. It does not air Friday, maybe because that’s when Rey Mysterio Jr. hosts a series of short action films instead.

This news article mentions a match on Saturday’s The Crash show interrupted by a surprise performance of Tijuana’s ensemble vocal opera. The article says the crowd enjoyed it. There’s a little sideways video of this, making it more clear that it happened before the matches.

Veracruz’s Coliseo Fraternidad says Mascara Sagrada Jr. stole their title & Billy Boy stole their title. They only found this out because Sagrada & Billy had a title match for the allegedly stolen belt this past weekend in Arena Azteca Budokan.

LuchaRama on 04/08 in Mexico City

Mala Hierba actually teams up and Baku the lucha elephant returns, that’s already my favorite match of the entire LuchaRama.

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania.

MDA Promotions, who usually only run in Monterrey, says they’re coming to Guadalajara on 06/18.

Hijo del Santo complained Televisa security wouldn’t let him in the door without unmasking. He later explained he knows there are rules, but they usually don’t apply to him.

Sam Adonis says the bad image Americans have of Mexico is wrong.

IWRG (WED) 03/29/2017 Arena Naucalpan
1) Omega vs Keiser Drago
2) Cadilac vs Picudo Jr.
3) Kanon & Saruman vs Avisman & Skanda
4) Shadow Boy vs Lunatic Extreme
5) Camaleón, Hijo del Alebrije, Pantera I vs Cerebro Negro, Demonio Infernal, Heddi Karaoui
6) Golden Magic & Veneno vs Máscara Año 2000 Jr. & Relámpago

Main event is building towards Magic/Relampago. A couple of surprising names: Camaleon was a rarely seen opening match veteran in CMLL before getting hit by a truck in 2014 and suffering a leg injury. He’s recovered enough to wrestle on indie shows the last couple of years (and the Baby Camaleons around are his nephews, I believe.) Saruman was an indie name of note around 2012, most notable in Todo x el Todo, one of a few guys who were training in CMLL forever and seemed promising but never getting a shot in that promotion. He mostly disappeared after 2014 and I assumed he wasn’t coming back, but he’s excitedly talking up his return on his Facebook.

CMLL (MON) 04/03/2017 Arena Puebla
1) Arkalis & París vs El Malayo & Joker
2) Asturiano & Rey Samuray vs Cancerbero & Raziel
3) Espíritu Maligno, Fuego, Pegasso vs Disturbio, Policeman, Skándalo
4) Blue Panther, Blue Panther Jr., The Panther vs Bobby Villa, Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora
5) Diamante Azul vs Pierroth
6) Atlantis, La Máscara, Rush vs Marco Corleone, Máximo Sexy, Volador Jr. [Relevos Increíbles]

Los Ingobernables having no friends leads to an odd main event. Azul/Pierroth wasn’t good in Arena Mexico and probably will be much worse in the rematches. Panthers versus Revolucinarios should at least be good. I presume the Joker in the rudo is actually Pequeno Joker and not the Guadalajara Joker.

new lucha videos for the weekend of March 24th, 2017

this week in IWRG

Elite jumped back to the first episode ever, so no need for that. There are a few episodes that haven’t aired in the US but, if they’re just repeating the same episodes over again, there’s no point in recording it. It says something if CMLL can’t get back on the air in the US over now twice warmed over repeats.
