AAA on Televisa: 2017-01-21

no cameraman is safe from Dinastia

Recapped: 01/25/2017

What happened: Hijo del Tirantes helped OGT again. Lady Shani pinned Dinastia, which I think means she’s owed a minis title match. (Maybe not, but it is her second win in a row.)

What was good: The first two matches were perfectly acceptable TV matches, no problem to watch even if they might not make a year end bit. The main event was the usual Hijo del Tirantes show and you already know how you feel about that by now.

Where can I watch it: It’s on AAA’s channel, but I hadn’t gotten to put those links in the database so you’re stuck with mine for this post

Previously: Goya Kong betrayed Psycho Clown, a move that seems to have real meaning besides this one angle.

AAA Rewind: Aerostar’s debut on this taping ten years ago.

Match 1: Big Mami, Dinastía, Máscara de Bronce vs Lady Shani, Mamba, Mini Psycho Clown

Winner: rudos (Lady Shani inverted crucifix powerbomb Dinastia)
Match Time: 9:00
Notes: Both Shani & Mami have Christmas themed outfits, though only Mami wrestles in hers. Mami also throws out presents to the crowd. Bronce wears a silver chest plate to the ring, and his body shape lines on his gear, which gives it a bit more texture than his original appearance. Announcers note this makes two straight wins for Shani.

Review: [good] this didn’t totally click and maybe I’m grading on a curve to like something from AAA, but there was definitely some good wrestling in here. This was a simple professional wrestling match, but that’s nice to have on this show. Mascara de Bronce looked impressive, with all three rudos setting him up well. This was a good night for Mamba and Shani worked with Bronce better than I would’ve thought. Dinastia’s kinda still doing the same matches as his debut year, but we don’t get to see him all that much. It hasn’t felt overexposed, still kind of cool. Big Mami has the same problems on offense as Niño Hamburguesa (her attempts to look agile instead demonstrate how easy it is to “do” a move if your opponents are willing to wait for you and visibly help you thru it), but she wasn’t so bad as to take the match down. I probably should be upset/confused about Shani beating the minis champion when the lowest women and maybe lowest main roster técnico on the roster are right there, but it’s Dinastia and I’ve already accepted they’re not doing anything with him anything. I suspect he was just the easiest guy to do the flashy move on, and they wanted to make sure Shani looked as impressive as possible in the win.

what is Mini Psycho supposed to be doing here?

Match 2: Angélico, Australian Suicide, Garza Jr. vs Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Parka Negra, Súper Fly

Winner: técnicos (Angelico Fall of the Angels Parka Negra)
Match Time: 9:02

Review: [good] Along the same lines of the previous match, where it had some highlights and was totally watchable for the time. The pace and timing of the match seemed off – best example was how Hijo del Pirata’s moonsault looked good, but he was very late in getting to it – but it was solid action and I didn’t feel like my time was wasted watching it. That counts as a win. Garza Jr. going from blowing a corner spot to stopping the match to strip is not ideal (though that was probably the idea if he didn’t blow the spot.) Announcers selling the idea of Garza, Suicide and Angelico as a new trio is retroactively hilarious. So is Artruo going off on a tangent about how Hector’s best days were as a rudo Perros del Mal member and Garza Jr. should be a rudo too. Garza listened! That’s not a crazy thought in context but so weird now. The dive train was fun.

this doesn’t seem fun for either guy

Noti AAA is a repeat. The segment was cut off TV last in Mexico because the basketball game ran long, so they just reran it here instead of doing a new one. This show aired after Guerra de Titanes but post-production was likely finished before it, so they couldn’t really talk about much unless they were absolutely sure of the Guerra de Titanes finishes.

Match 3: Dark Cuervo, Dark Scoria, Zorro vs Averno, Chessman, Ricky Marvin
Plaza de Toros Belisario Arteaga, Chilpancingo, Guerrero, 12/17/2016

Winner: rudos (Averno cradle Zorro)
Match Time: 11:23
Notes: Hijo de Tirantes is the referee. Averno takes off his shirt in celebration after hitting the Xinetez with the chair, and I think this is the first time he’s wrestled shirtless in AAA if not longer. I’m weirded out. Xinetez are complete técnicos here, as though we all missed a turn somewhere along the way. Hijo del Tirantes plays it complete straight for ten minutes, and then starts slow counting the Xinetez. The Xinetez are smart enough to get submissions instead, but Tirantes refuses to acknowledge the submissions, and breaks the holds up. The crowd screams and there’s shots of upset children. Zorro uses his cane on everyone which is not a DQ. Ricky pulls downs Zorro’s pants, Averno cradess him, and eveyroen else piles on for the quick count three. Crazy Zorro laughs about the cheating and tries to do a call and response bit with the crowd that fails completely. (Zorro pretends it works and they switch the mic, but the mic worked, the bit did not.) Zorro threatens Tirantes vaguely, then the Xinetez suddenly get angry and chase the OGT away

Review: [ok] I mean, at least they saved the Tirantes bits for the end, doing it a few times, instead of doing it eight minutes straight? This still wasn’t any good and I probably wouldn’t have got into it if was because they’ve made it very clear that doesn’t matter, but it wasn’t as annoying as last week. The OGT didn’t a lot when they were in control. The Xinetez went for it as técnicos, but didn’t look good enough to make this work. Nothing really was going to make this work, so it hardly matters.

they really need to work on the timing for this

The show ends with a Rumbo a TripleMania segment, Psycho Clown talking about meeting Dr. Wagner. Psycho took wrestling classes from Dr. Wagner when he was starting out (which fits, since they would’ve been both in CMLL.) We’ll probably get one of these segments the whole way.
