AAA on Televisa: 2017-01-14

Recapped: 01/15/2016

What happened: Goya Kong returned, and later betrayed her brother Psycho Clown to side with the rudos. Aerostar & Drago kept the tag titles and united with Argenis to form a new unnamed group.

What was good: Nothing stuck out as something you should go out of your way to see, but nothing was truly terrible either. The opener was too short and the main event was too long, but it was a very normal AAA TV episode.

Where can I watch it: It’s on AAA’s channel.

Previously: Perros beat the Clowns, and the Clowns beat up security. Pimpinela beat Mamba in a bull terrier match. Psycho Clown lost yet again. This was all like a month ago.

Fantasma is hyped as a técnico in the main event, so he joins Texano Jr. as a top rudo changing sides without ever really doing a turn.

AAA Rewind: the debut of the Psycho Circus, nine years ago on this same taping.

Dr. Wagner introduces his friends (Pagano, Murder Clown and Monster Clown), and calls them Potencial Universal. This takes a long time to accomplish. Pagano says nothing but his catchphrase. Murder and Monster don’t have anything to say. Psycho Clown interrupts to kiss up to the fans and get in his own catchphrase. This segment is dragging. Psycho Clown introduces his back up, someone who’s been supporting him since he was a little boy, the returning Goya Kong. Goya yells at the rudas, and Psycho says he’s going to win Wagner’s mask at TripleMania.

Match 1: Argenis, Lanzeloth, Niño Hamburguesa vs Carta Brava Jr., Dave The Clown, Soul Rocker
Plaza de Toros Belisario Arteaga, Chilpancingo, Guerrero, 12/17/2016

Lucha Libre AAA

Winner: técnicos (Argenis Spanish Fly Carta Brava)
Match Time: 5:40
Notes: The edecanes are in Christmas outfits, which makes sense when this was taped but looks dated by the time airs. Devil Rocker is wearing a t-shirt instead of his outfit top (and may have changed the pants too.) Dave is introduced as the biggest start of the rudo group.

Review: [ok] very rushed match; five minute matches don’t do much to help anyone, and this one was just a blur. This was preceded by about four minutes of people walking to the ring with very loud music trying to cover up the total lack of reaction; maybe there’s a better time arrangements to be had. Everyone got a couple of spots in space they had and there weren’t any errors (or they were edited out.) Dave didn’t even look horrible with Lanzelot. Soul found a moment to take one crazy bump, so that was good. Camera work wasn’t, with shots being from the ring angle to show some of the bigger moves. (The double dive was half obscured, and I’m not sure why.)

Match 2: Aerostar & Drago © vs Monsther Clown & Murder Clown and Daga & Joe Lider for the AAA World Tag Team Championship

Lucha Libre AAA

Winner: Aerostar & Drago (Aerostar pin Monster Clown after Psycho Clown interference)
Match Time: 8:06
Notes: Arturo Rivera talks about Daga being the new leader of the Perros de Mal, which is news to all of us (and may not be correct, but one of the announcers comment about it either way.) Hijo del Tiarntes is bizarrely taken out on a Aerostar tope, outside to check on other guys. Aerostar gets a visual pin on Monster, only for super Fly to run and hit him with a chair. Super Fly walks out Murder Clown goes for a top rope splashes, but Psycho Clown hits both Clowns with a chair. Psycho Clown gives Monster a shiranu, and drags Aerostar on top before leaving. Tirantes returns, counts three. (This turns out not to be an elimination match.) Psycho leaves, as the rudos are bating up Aerostar. Argenis is the third separate run-in in about 90 seconds, taking out Murder with a dropkick and Monster with a headscissors. Drago comes back in and immediately decides to invite Argenis to join a trio with he and Aerostar. Argenis says it’d be a great honor and accepts.

Review: [ok] Decent action, though not a lot to it. They did rapid fire spots for the first half of the match, and then it all stopped for the big bump and the run-ins (which end up meaning more than the match.) There was no real build to anything, they just did a lot of things until they got to the moment where all the story kicked in. The action was solid like the last match, though this one had more spectacular stuff. I appreciated Aerostar getting a visual pinfall before the run-ins, so it didn’t feel like the técnicos were just handed the titles.

double splash flashes the Perros out of existence
never thought it would be Aerostar who finally got the best of Tirantes, but here we are

Match 3: Hijo del Fantasma, Psycho Clown, Texano Jr. vs Dr. Wagner Jr., El Mesías, Pagano

Lucha Libre AAA

Winner: técnicos (by DQ)
Match Time: 11:19
Notes: Psycho is last man out, and of course attacked by Dr. Wagner Jr. to start the match. Psycho Clown gets a backcracker on Dr. Wagner only for Murder and Monster to run in, and interference is a DQ this week. Wagner & the Clowns beat up Psycho until Goya walks out with a chair. The rudos bail even before Goya can get in the ring, except Wagner acts like he’s trapped. Goya helps up Psycho, faces off against Wagner, and Goya spins her brother around to foul him. Announcers are shocked. Goya hits Psycho with a chair too. Fantasma and Texano stop existing (though one gets on mic for a moment), much like in the rest of AAA booking, but Pagano and Mesias do join the fun. Wagner screams Goya into the microphone a few times. Goya says Wagner is going to win at TripleMania, and the rudos take Psycho’s mask as the show ends.

Review: [ok] The AAA main event formula is the rudos attacking the técnicos before the match starts, the rudos working over the técnicos for about five minutes with props, the técnicos coming back with the same props, a standoff to reset things, the técnicos cycling thru their offense for another few minutes, and a finish. This was exactly that AAA main event, though maybe a little less than you’d expect with Fantasma & Texano (who were non-factors even before the angle.) This was a big crowd, but they didn’t seem that into a going thru the motions main event, or just weren’t miced all that well. I wasn’t looking for a Goya Kong turn, but they did it well enough.

AAA matches are also built around things that aren’t tables used as tables
Fantasma gets to do his tope as his big spot, but in a way where he can’t really do it full speed
