CMLL Puebla: 2017-01-09

Recapped: 01/10/2017

What happened: Negro Casas unmasked Carístico to set up the expected singles match. Pequeño Violencia cheated to beat Shockercito, which appears to have started a feud between them. Ripper pinned Blue Panther Jr. to keep their issue going.

What was good: Nothing. There were highlights around but this is a show you can pass on without a second thought.

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s channel.

Winner: técnicos (1/3)
Match Time: 15:43

Review: [below average] a slightly different combination than usual, but still not much good. This has a really good pace once it got going in the first fall, but also plenty of errors. There was a horrible looking headscissors and a double duck down spot in the same 30 seconds stretch. Millenium going for moves while King Jaguar stood by blankly was another low moment. I appreciated the third fall ending quickly because I had given up on the match by that point.

this got us off to a poor start
dives for finishes is good

Match 2: Astro, Shockercito, Último Dragóncito vs Espíritu Maligno, Mini Joker, Pequeño Violencia

  2. rudos
    • Espíritu Maligno guillotine double stomp Astro (2:59)
    • Pequeño Violencia tied in the ropes dropkick Shockercito (3:34)
  3. rudos
    • Pequeno Violencia powerbomb w/feet on the ropes Último Dragoncito (2:51)

Winner: rudos (2/3)
Match Time: 12:36
Notes: A referee would have to be blind to miss Violencia putting his feet on the ropes for the win. Luckily for the rudos, Pompin was the referee. The técnicos demanded a rematch.

Review: [ok] mostly just a match, which was a big step up from the last match. Astro and Mini Joker stood out the most in the match, with Astro’s big dive at the end looking impressive. (Mini Joker was hard to recognize at first with a very different looking mask.) Violencia was working harder than usual, probably because he’s getting a feud. He’s more excited about it than I am.

bonus points for Joker not standing still but still being able to take the move

Match 3: Blue Panther Jr., The Panther, Titán vs Kráneo, Olímpico, Ripper

  1. Invasors
    • swinging gate bomb on Titan (7:37)
  2. técnicos
    • The Panther frog splash Kraneo (3:21)
    • Titan figure four Olímpico (3:27)
  3. Invasors
    • Olimpico back heel trip cradle The Panther (4:54)
    • Kraneo hipsmash Blue Panther Jr. (5:37)

Winner: Invasors (1/3)
Match Time: 16:41
Notes: Kraneo saved Ripper from being beat by Panther’s nudo lagunero, hit the finishing move on Panther Jr., and allowed Ripper to get the pin.

Review: [ok] another match that was more boring than bad. The Invasors aren’t interesting for long stretches, and the Ripper/Panther feud didn’t bring out anything interesting for either guy. Titan’s tope in the last fall seemed like the safest one he’s done, but the visual of him lifting up Kraneo in the second fall was really cool. Olímpico nearly pins himself on his finish, which I guess isn’t all that different from a German suplex (but a lot less impact.)

Match 4: Johnny Idol, Marco Corleone, Valiente vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Vangellys

  1. TGR
    • Vangellys fisherman’s suplex Valiente (5:59)
  2. técnicos
    • Marco Corleone top rope plancha Terrible (2:10)
  3. técnicos
    • Johnny Idol moonsault Vangellys (5:11)
    • Valiente arm trap half crab Rey Bucanero (5:17)

Winner: técnicos (2/3)
Match Time: 13:26

Review: [ok] the weakest of the three middle matches. Nothing much remarkable about the match, couldn’t even come up with something I wanted to GIF. Marco’s comeback didn’t look good. All the contact looked off and bad. It went better in the third fall but he’s had better matches. I’m not sure it’d work any way, but it’s hard to imagine fans buying into the big Valiente push when he’s still losing trios falls to Vangellys the same as always. He still won, but he’s in the same spot he’s been in for years.

Match 5: Atlantis, Carístico, Diamante Azul vs Cavernario, Gran Guerrero, Negro Casas

  1. rudos
    • Barbaro Cavernario pump splash Carístico (3:08)
  2. técnicos
    • Atlantis casadora cradle Gran Guerrero (1:32)
    • Diamante Azul casadora cradle Barbaro Cavernario (1:32)
  3. técnicos
    • DQ Negro Casas [unmasking Carístico] (3:31)

Winner: técnicos (2/3)
Match Time: 8:11
Notes: Negro attacked Carístico from behind to start the fight early. Casas escapes a sunset flip and blatantly unmasked Carístico for a DQ. Carístico demanded one more fall, then wanted a mask versus hair match, and ended up with a singles match next week.

Review: [ok] a very light match mostly existing to set up Casas/Caristico next week. Diamante Azul was invisible until the third fall, and Atlantis remained cloaked the whole time. Cavernario was busy, but almost no one else was. They did lots of dives teases and no dives. Next week should be better, but this was barely possible.
