CMLL Martes de Glamour: 2017-01-03

rope skills

Recapped: 01/03-04/2017

What happened: Máximo lost to Negro Casas in much the same way Carístico lost to Carístico the same night before.

What was good: There wasn’t a title match, but the undercard was generally less life destroying.

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s channel.

Match 1: Acero & Aéreo vs Demus 3:16 & Pequeño Universo 2000
Arena México, 01/03/2017
Video: VideosOficialesCMLL

    • Aereo Spanish Fly Pequeño Universo (4:24)
    • Acero huracanrana Demus 3:16 (4:31)
  2. rudos
    • Demus top rope splash Aereo (3:38)

  3. rudos
    • Pequeño Universo senton Acero (3:23)
    • Acero quebrada Pequeño Universo (3:45)
    • Demus Driver on Acero (4:15)

Winner: rudos (2/3)
Match Time: 12:46

Review: [below average] can Demus have an entertaining match fighting 1.5 on 2? Not 2017 Demus, at least. Pequeño Universo served as an extra body to hold or finish a double team and had little to add, but he also wasn’t one bad wrestler holding back an interesting match. Aereo was alright, but this was a mostly lame opener. Acero being out on the ramp for a full minute after a dropkick to the back looked dumb. At least no one appeared to be killed. Aereo was able to turn and protect himself a bit today. It’s really not totally on Demus if someone gets hurt during this spot; CMLL has told these guys to cut off enough things, especially in these early matches, that they deserve a lot of the responbility if something ever goes wrong on the driver.

Match 2: Estrellita, Sanely, Skadi vs La Seductora, Metálica, Reyna Isis

    • Skadi missile dropkick Metalica (4:51)
    • Sanely reclined full nelson La Seductora (4:53)
  2. rudas

  3. tecnicas
    • Estrellita tapatia Reina Isis (3:42)

Winner: tecnicas (1/3)
Match Time: 13:07

Review: [ok] This looked like a disaster on paper, so it just being a match seems like a success. There were even professional looking sequences in the third fall. The highlights of this match were mostly Skadi hitting Metalica very hard and Skadi slowly setting up a spot to hit Metalica very hard. Pobre Metalica. Skadi is twice the size of everyone else and they still have her climbing the ropes (very slowly) and doing mirror spots with Sanely, so I guess the idea is whoever puts this matches together is blind or something.

Metalica has a dangerous job
why are you doing any of this

Match 3: Oro Jr., Pegasso, Star Jr. vs Okumura, Skándalo, Virus

  1. rudos
    • Virus arm trap reverse armbar Oro Jr. (7:56)
    • Okumura Michinoku Driver Pegasso (8:08)
  2. técnicos
    • Oro Jr. top rope tope Skandalo (2:50)

  3. rudos
    • Okumura hanging DDT Oro Jr. (4:00)
    • Skandalo Driver on Star Jr. (4:22)

Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 15:26

Review: [ok] almost recommendable, with this one also being a more watchable match than I’d figure. Oro Jr. was about 100% better than last week, working much faster and looking sharper on everything than usual. He even landed the 619 (though the top rope tope was cooler.) Star Jr. landing on is feet after being tripped off the top rope was impressive and his dive looked cool. The crowd got really up for the comeback because the rudos cooled it off quite a bit. Skandalo was most inoffensive until he couldn’t take an armdrag at the end.

Virus isn’t doing standoffs with Oro Jr.

Match 4: Tritón vs Sagrado in a lightning match
Arena México, 01/03/2017
Video: VideosOficialesCMLL

Winner: Sagrado (Buca Storm)
Match Time: 7:29

Review: [good] A great Triton showcase, with Sagrado there to take it all. Triton seems much more confident after his excursion. He wasn’t trying the step up turn moonsault to the floor before he left, and nailed it here. (Even the ‘flub’ seems like a staged one to set up Sagrado’s superkick, though Triton taking back on offense right after makes it less clear.) I was surprised Triton did the 450 as a near fall, but maybe that’s the correct strategy. Wins and losses mean absolutely nothing in the first half of the card as of late, so maybe it’s just better try to do all your best looking moves to standout without worrying about hurting their credibility (especially if they’re just going to magically start working anyway once you’re in a feud.) Just do what you can to get over. That was Triton doing all his big highspots and Sagrado being evil and dropping Triton on his head. I needed a little bit more, in drama or pace, to rate it higher, but it wasn’t that far off. Sagrado seems like a guy who should be going places in 2017.

Match 5: Drone, Guerrero Maya Jr., Johnny Idol vs Ephesto, Hechicero, Ripper
Arena México, 01/03/2017
Video: VideosOficialesCMLL

  1. rudos
    • Hechicero senton Guerrero Maya (4:54)
  2. técnicos
    • Guerrero Maya blocked cradle Ephesto (2:21)
  3. rudos
    • Ripper top rope senton Johnny Idol (5:41)
    • Hechicero conjuro Drone (5:41)

Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 12:56

Review: [good] Match moved well, didn’t stay that long, and had some entertaining spots. This is probably going to be no more memorable for me then a lot of stuff I dismiss, but they worked well for the time they had. Everyone matched up against each fine, and Idol was the closest thing to a weak link. Hechicero remains everyone’s favorite tag team partner, setting up Ripper perfectly for his finish and Ephesto & Ripper seemed to understand his wacky moves better than most. This could’ve been improved if they had a feud (or did more with Maya/Ephesto) and there may be a Tuesday curve going on here but I had no problem with this match.

Match 6: Máximo Sexy, Stuka Jr., Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero
Arena México, 01/03/2017
Video: VideosOficialesCMLL

  1. rudos
    • Negro Casas scorpion Volador (4:17)
  2. técnicos
    • Volador kiss cradle Negro Casas (2:13)
  3. rudos
    • Stuka torpedo splash Rey Bucanero (2:13)
    • Euforica Special on Stuka Jr. (2:27)
    • Negro Casas foul Máximo (3:01)

Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 9:31
Notes: Just like in Puebla last night, Negro was shoved into the ref, forced the ref to turn around (no bump for Tirantes!) and snuck in a foul. This time, it was on Máximo.

Review: [ok] Usual level of a Tuesday main event. They were taking this so not seriously that Volador and Máximo kept throwing Stuka back in to face the fight himself, and then Volador betrayed Máximo to throw him in. This was not a particularly serious match and yet Stuka still did the tricky monkey flip tope con giro and they played up Máximo/Casas stuff. It was too slight for me, and the third fall saw a lot of people walking thru stuff or half reaching out of people on missed moves, but it seemed fine enough for the crowd.
