5) Mr. Niebla, Shocker, Último Guerrero DQ Dragón Lee, Máximo Sexy,Rush
Rudos took 1/3, the last when Rush was DQed for excessive violence/ref attack. Shocker wants a hair match with Rush, but Rush reminded Shocker that he already won that one and only offered a singles match.

That singles match is already set for next week. The Blue Panther title match will air on the Guadalajara stream on Saturday night at 10:30pm Central Time.

AAA F1 (THU) 10/27/2016 Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Iztacalco, Distrito Federal [AAA]
1) Atomic Boy, Dr. Wagner Jr., Ricky Marvin b Dave The Clown, Parka Negra, Súper Fly
2) Argenis, Bengala, La Parka b Averno, Chessman, Máscara Año 2000 Jr.

AAA hyped a tie up with the Mexico F1 race earlier in the year, and ran a lucha libre training demonstration and a short show for the teams, which seemed to be well received. I’m not sure I have the results correct; this was more about interacting with the people anyway. The crew from Japan was just arriving back in Mexico when this was taking place, so this was an entirely different group. (It also might have been the reason Fantasma wasn’t originally scheduled for Star Battle, because he’d been one of the faces of this cross promotion.) I’ve been questioning if AAA had enough bodies to run two shows, but they actually had three separate crews last night if you include the group working a show in Puebla.

Today’s CMLL show begins the week long celebration of Dia de Muertos. Arena Mexico will be dressed up as the underworld, edecanes and luchadors will perform in different costumes and paint, and the losers of the bigger matches will be dragged to hell – or a side entrance to the back. Matches may end up being a bit shorter, but it’s an entertaining change for a week.

The big match tonight is Volador versus Valiente in this year’s Universal Championship final. Volador is the heavy favorite, but Valiente’s been an underdog in every match of this tournament and has won every match of this tournament so far. The case for Volador winning is pretty simple: he’s CMLL’s top tecnico, he’s probably their luchador of the year, he’s not won this tournament, it’ll mean much more if Volador wins tonight.

It’s tougher to make the case for Valiente, but there are scenarios where it makes sense for him to win. CMLL Informa seems to tease the end of the Sky Team any time more than one of them are on the show, and Valiente beating Volador could upset the balance of the trio. Valiente’s a guy in a lot of main events but not seen as a main eventer, and this could give him the extra boost he’s missing. CMLL has set the bar at a significant mask match being on the line every September, doesn’t have many masks of importance to still put on the line, and could use this make Valiente’s mask more significant a longer term plan of putting him on the Anniversary match next year. Valiente’s heavily into bodybuilding, CMLL likes that, and Valiente winning would obviously encourage more of their luchadors to focus harder on it.

I can make that case – but I don’t really believe it. Universal wins either have set up that year’s Anniversary match or being used as rewards for top guys, and Volador is a top guy. I’d be surprised if he lost tonight, and I’d be nearly as surprised if this started a break up with the Sky Team in the short term.

There’s not anything as pivotal on the rest of the show, but there does seem to be a direction with some of the other other matches. The semimain has Euforia, Niebla Roja and Ultimo Guerrero facing the newest combination of Los Ingobernables, Pierroth, Rush and La Mascara. The actual Rush/La Mascara breakup started over Pierroth being put in Los Ingobernables and the ongoing storyline has been Mistico & Dragon Lee not liking Rush siding with La Mascara. We don’t know how Pierroth feels about all of this, or how they feel about Pierroth. Yes, Pierroth is a key luchador on the night hell comes to CMLL. It also might not go anywhere; I have a sneaking suspicion Rush won’t be around next Friday.

(The Guerreros and Ingobernables are opposite sides of this match, then teaming on Monday in Puebla for the trios titles. Day to day CMLL consistency is poor.)

Dragon Lee, Caristico and Mistico team up in the fourth match to take on Mephisto, Ephesto and Luciferno, in what should be a showcase for the tecnicos. Caristico is once again double booked with Elite, but they’re running Plan Sexenal. Google Maps says it’s about 25 minute drive. I’ve riden by both in a taxi and that sounds about right; Carisitco should not even need his super powers to make the Elite main event this time around.

The tercera is Marcela, Estrellita and Sanely against Metalica, Amapola and Dalys, in a rematch from last week. That appears to be setting up a Marcela/Dalys title match, maybe next week. The second match is Oro, Soberano and Pegasso against Disturbio, Okumura and Virus; Okumura is off to ROH after the show.

Bengala & Flyer and Metalico & Apocalipsis open the show. Apocalipsis is not any good, and hasn’t been on a Friday night show since May 16, 2014. CMLL’s next major show is probably the New Year’s Day show, which has lately been the mask loss farewell to an opening match wrestler. This is about the time of year where that program starts. It might not be Apocalipsis, I’m really hoping it’s not Apocalipsis, (it might be Bengala???), but a screw finish to the opener might actually mean something.

CultIcon also previews this show. The show will air at 8:30pm on ClaroSports as normal on Friday nights. The show will also air on NJPW World, so there will be a clean version out there somewhere. I will not be watching this live, but will probably RT things in a way to confused people into believing I’m actually paying attention. (Maybe I’ll see the main event if this show goes longer than the baseball game.)

It’s a triple taping night. A slightly jet lagged AAA will be in Tlalnepantla tonight to tape one week of TV. The scheduled main event is Psycho Circus (Psycho, Murder, Monster) versus Perros del Mal (Daga, Lider, Pentagon) versus rudos Damian, Wagner and Pagano. There’s a couple problems there: Monster and Murder aren’t friends with Psycho anymore, and Pentagon is also advertised in the main event of the AAA show in Tijuana. Based on recent history, AAA will probably send Villano IV to Tijuana to replace him and run the TV match as scheduled (which means Psycho gets turned on early on but runs back in late.) I’d prefer just turning it into a crazy 5v5 match if they can figure out one more tecnico.

It’s a very card subject to change night. The semimain looks safe: Cuervo, Scoria and Zorro face Averno, Chessman and Ricky Marvin in a preview of a trios title match next week. The tercera was scheduled to a Hijo del Fantasma vs Jack Evans vs Angelico three way match, but no one’s expecting Jack to be there. It’ll probably be a singles match; AAA hasn’t listed a change.

The second match is listed as Dave the Clown, Parka Negra and Super Fly versus Aerostar, Venum and a mystery person. I’ve accidentally turned Venum into a meme in my head. Back on September 14, Venum posted a vague thing on instagram that could be read as him moving on from AAA, or coming back to AAA, or getting a new mask, or just being vaguely inspiring because he’s in his twenties on instagram and that is apparently what you do. Venum’s been listed on spot shows, but nothing where results have turned up, and he hasn’t posted since then. Venum’s tag partner left, various other people have left, and yet I probably read way too much into an instagram post. I guess we find out tonight. For what it’s worth, our favorite flying goat boy, Gotita de Plata, mentioned somewhere that he’s on this taping. He could be replacing Venum, he could be the mystery guy (which alway seemed more like “we don’t know yet” mystery than a “big surprise” mystery.)

The opener is Mamba, Mocho Cota Jr., and Soul Rocker against the Apaches in a mixed trios; Faby missed Star Battle and had the weird deal on Heroes Inmortales, so perhaps there’s some reason she can’t wrestle right full matches right now, but I think she’ll probably be there. That opener probably won’t make TV but may be up on YouTube later.

AAA’s card is listed at starting at 8:30pm, which means more like 9. There is no live stream, but it should air next Saturday.

Elite completes the groups taping tonight. They are back recording TV in Mexico City, but now in Plan Sexenal (a venue used a couple times for AAA, but more memorable as a Perros del Mal TV taping locale.) It’s a not a big building, and they should fill it up with a Caristico versus Rey Escorpion match. It’s the big feud they’ve been pushing on TV, and maybe one that’ll turn into an apuesta match down the line. That match is listed as Liga Elite, the Xtreme Tiger/LA Park match is listed as Liga Elite, but the Liga Elite concept only exists on the posters. Tiger has had fun matches with guys his size and not fun matches with guys much bigger than him, but Park is better at selling for smaller guys and figuring out a way to make it work than most.

The fourth match has Mr. 450 and Chicano from Puerto Rico teaming up against Cibernetico & Black Tauro/Taurus. Last week, Cibernetico & Sharlie said they had a surprise. This week, the poster lists Black Tauro as a Hell Brother. I think I’ve worked out the surprise. Golden Magic, Bandido and Zumbi are scheduled to face Hijo de Dos Caras, Hijo de Dr. Wagner and Karone Jr. (Hijo de Dos isn’t always around when he’s listed, which might be more of an Elite issue.) Emperador Azteca & Heddi Karaoui face Imposible & Metaleon in a relevos increibles match; Elite doesn’t really go anywhere with it’s undercard matches (see no Argos/Golden Magic this week), but Imposible & Karaoui have history from IWRG. Mr. Leo & Hijo del Pantera take on Impulso & Belial in a great sounding match which is unlikely to make TV.

This show also starts at 8:30, or at least that’s the plan. It’ll air tomorrow on Azteca7, and about 6 months from now in the US.

Lucha Underground Season 4 has been rumored to start taping in January, and people with the promotion in panel discussions have generally indicated the hope is to tape the first half of the year (give or take) and tour the second half. The Cricket Wireless trip to the temple giveaway contest confirms that the working plan is indeed to start taping in January. The rules state the winner gets a trip to Los Angeles by January 30th. That’s a Monday, so maybe that means tapings on January 28th and 29th and flying home Monday, or perhaps they just figure sometime in January and are using the final date to say it’ll be by that point. This is not the same as Lucha Underground announcing something – El Rey hasn’t even officially said they’re picking up the series for a fourth season – but at least we know a bit of what they’re attempting.

An indie show lists a 11/19 Mascara Dorada match as his final match in Mexico. This is sketchy: it’s not a regular indie promotion (and a booking on a weekend, which Dorada has been trying to avoid), and the promotion was previously advertising the same card without that main event. I’m skeptical it’s correct, but we’ve been looking for any sense of when Dorada might be finished and this is the first time thing I’ve seen suggesting he’d be in all in Mexico.

Two luchadors from the DTU training seminar will get a chance to wrestle in Riviera Maya for a weekend.

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report.

Black Terry Jr. has photos of Wednesday’s IWRG/FILL show and slow motion highlights of the main event. I haven’t asked, but I’d assume that means the show wasn’t taped by AYM.

+LuchaTV released an interview with Rey Fenix that I haven’t watched yet but is probably pretty helpful.

AAA posted their February 2010 taping from Puebla. This is the in-ring debut of Lasser Boy. Lasser Boy was introduced in the AAA anime movie as La Parka’s little brother, in what seemed like a way to add a new kid’s character to the matches – it’s one of the main thrusts of the movie. Lasser Boy won his debut match (which was edited heavily at the time, haven’t watched it back yet, and also includes the similarly infamous Mantra), lost two more TV matches, was listed on spot shows thru May, and then never spoken again.

I’ve never gotten the story of what happened there. It wasn’t like Lasser Boy didn’t get over, he wasn’t around long enough not to get over. It’s certainly possible they decided he wasn’t good enough wrestler, but AAA’s not really been concerned about match quality when they like the character. Maybe they just didn’t like character – between Lasser Boy, Mantra, and the Vipers 2.0, there were a lot of characters who were introduced in late 2009 and then thrown into the dumpster in early 2010 in what felt like a creative shift. Or maybe there was a rights issue with the movie or a problem with the person under the gimmick. Lasser Boy once did a newspaper interview where he gave the same bio information that Atomic Boy has, but later AAA denied they were the same people. (They were about the same height and size, edit: but they were also in the same match later on.) Anyway, this was a Venum thing of 2010, more or less.

Marco Corleone & Mistico appeared on ImagenTV’s Sale el Sol show today. That’s the successor channel to Cadena3 and it’d make sense for CMLL to turn up on that channel. On the other hand, Azteca did CMLL stuff quite often before ending up with Elite on their channel instead, so this is no definite indication (and probably just Dia de Muertos promotion.)

Chicago’s GALLI says they’re bringing back the IWA championships, including the belt that was worn by Mil Mascaras in the 1970s, on a 01/15 taping. GALLI presumably doesn’t know Mil Mascaras is defending the same title in Japan against Nosawa in a few days.

Voices of Wrestling has it’s review of this week’s Lucha Underground.

6) Hijo del Alebrije vs Emperador Azteca, Leo, Hijo del Pantera, Killer Jr., Bobby Lee Jr., Violencia Jr., Imposible, Pantera I, Zatura [mask, cage]

IWRG’s annual Castle of Terror show, which has to go better than last year’s. They haven’t changed the rules, so someone can accidentally fall of the cage early and screw it up again. This is usually a Sunday show, but Wednesday this year because they rented out the building on Sunday.

Hijo del Alebrije, Emperador Azteca, Hijo del Pantera, and Imposible seem highly unlikely to lose their mask in a match like this. Leo is probably not working twice and that’s meant to be Teelo. He’s the least used of the Ninja Turtles but there’s still life in those characters. Killer Jr. and Violencia Jr. are possibilities as indie guys who aren’t around IWRG a whole much, but might not get a better chance to lose their mask. Pantera I and Bobby Lee Jr. fit too, but IWRG probably could get lengthy singles feud out of Pantera I lose his mask, and Bobby Lee Jr. in a mask match might be a bigger draw in Leon. Zatura sticks out as a guy who’s been gone for a long time and only popped back up in the months before the show; he’s the favorite to lose.

Recapped: 10/24/2016

What happened: Volador kept the welterweight championship over Cavernario. La Mascara helped Rush win, much to Dragon Lee’s displeasure. Pequeño Olimpico either forget the rules of lucha libre or sabotaged his own match.

What was good: Volador/Cavernario for sure. I really liked the second match, and the fourth and six matches were good.

Where can I watch it: It’s on my channel and elsewhere. Read More

lucha TV preview for weekend of October 29th

20161027lt

actually readable version

I’ve made some changes. Guadalajara is added back to the list because I can record it and so I can actually keep track of what airs. I can’t do that with the LATV or Titanes en el Ring CMLL shows, so I’ve removed them. The actual static page has the full list of shows I know exist (or might have existed) but I’m not listing up there.  And, yes, I know Guadalajara actually airs on Thursday but I can’t get that one and it’s old news by the time this post goes up.

This is still longer than usual because CMLL is airing Sunday’s show on YouTube. It’ll be three straight days of CMLL streams due to the Dia de Muertos shows, plus the usual Friday night show. CMLL’s added an important match to each show: Valiente/Volador on ClaroSports, Rush vs Ultimo Guerrero on Sunday, the Sky Team defending against the illogical trio of Euforia, Gran Guerrero and La Mascara in Puebla, and the Hijos del Infierno defending against the illogical team of Mistico, Mascara Dorada and Diamante Azul on Tuesday.

I’m still getting a feel for how CMLL Retro is going to work. They haven’t had near as many boxing shows at Coliseo in recent months, so they’re going to slip farther and farther behind if they’re breaking up each taping into two shows. When we were there, it appeared they recorded the whole show, which means a lot of stuff is getting unused. Maybe they don’t tape every week? Maybe it’s just not going to matter because everything is so disconnected anyway.

Lucha Underground‘s preview mentions the loser leaves town and dial of doom matches. There’s at least one more match.

Sunday’s Arena Naucalpan show is another indy promotion taking over the building. AYM now hasn’t aired the last few and I wouldn’t bet on them not airing it again. Gives me more chances to get the FILL show, I guess. (The feed is still not working right.)

Chairo 6 announced, Arena 2 de Junio victorious, Rey Fenix injury update

Gym FILL (Black Terry) vs Gym Arena 2 de Junio (Tony Cirio). Hip Hop Man replaced Aramis. Black Terry forced Atomic Star to apologize for betraying FILL against the LLB team before they started. The match ended with Luis Cirio faking a foul from Black Dragon for the DQ win. Team Arena 2 de Junio invited IWRG to their arena for the rematch.

IWRG people work Arena 2 de Junio fairly frequently, so I suspect that rematch is actually happening. Picudo Jr. is a sneaky good choice to lose next week’s Castillo del Terror (assuming he’s even in the match!)

Carisitco posted a group photo which included Rey Fenix in a sling Wednesday night. That suggests it probably wasn’t a minor shoulder injury.

Lucha Memes announced Chairo 6 will take place on November 27 at Arena Naucalpan once again.

Hechicero is off Sunday’s Chario/LG show in Xalapa. Mephisto will replace him and face Eslabon Perdido instead. It was always hard to figure how Hechicero was going to get from ROH in Maryland to Xalapa in time, though Hechicero is also listed for a show in Oaxaca (which seems like it’d also be tough to make.)

TKD and CultIcon have reviews of Lucha Underground. Segunda Caida reviews last week’s episode.

AAA continues to put up 2010 AAA TV episodes with the February taping from Tehuacan.

A three minute visit to Rey Mysterio Jr.’s collection of trophies and souvenirs.

Excelsior follows around CMLL referee Edgar el Guapo.

Leo Riano claims Rey Escorpion is on a indefinite break from CMLL, has not actually quit, and is on good enough terms that he can go back to CMLL when he wants.

Mamba and Hiedra talk about going to Japan (before they’ve gone.)

Lucha Underground 3×8: Gifts of the Gods

sunset flip pause powerbomb
sunset flip pause powerbomb

Matches

Marty Martinez defeated Ivelisse (4:11, half nelson suplex, OK)

Texano beats Cage (7:35, small package, good)

Johnny Mundo defeated Sexy Star to win the Gift of the Gods championship (11:26, knucks to the face, below average)

Developments

“This is incredibly wrong. I’m not feeling this at all.”

That’s how Vampiro ended the show. He was saying it because he was appalled with the result of the main event. I concurred with the sentiment if not the reasoning, but we’ll get to that.

The show was built around Sexy Star versus Johnny Mundo. Sexy earlier confidently informed Dario she’d cash in the Gift of the Gods title next week to fight Matanza, and considered Johnny Mundo no more than warmup match. She was unconcerned when Dario informed her Fenix, Drago and Aerostar would be banned from the match. The match told a different story: Mundo absolutely dominated her for the early portions of the match. Sexy mounted a minor comeback, then referee Marty Elias was taken out on a Mundo airplane spin. Things degenerated from there.

Sexy immediately got the visual pinfall on Mundo, with Striker pushing that Sexy had a count of nine. She got only a count of two when Elias recovered. Mundo then accidentally speared Elias, leaving him out of action for minutes. Sexy quickly got another visual win, a submission choke with Mundo tapping out then starting to pass out until Jack Evans and PJ Black made the save. They took out Sexy with double superkicks and a swinging gate bomb (!), with backup referee Rich Knox sliding in to count, but only getting two. Evans & Black pulled out Knox and took him out with another double superkick. (The announcers were surprisingly unbothered by this, simply speculating that third ref Justin Borden was too smart to come out and get similarly taken out.) The Mack made the save and helped Sexy clear house, for another two count when Marty recovered. Marty took away a chair from Mundo, Mundo pulled out brass knucks from his trunks, and punched Sexy Star in the face for the three count. Vampiro declared this victory null, void and utterly meaningless, while Mundo celebrated with his first ever Lucha Underground singles championship. Sexy won’t be cashing in next week, and it remains to be seen if Mundo will.

kick to the camera cut
kick to the camera cut

The other big item was handled in an abbreviated Mysterio/Cueto vignette (which seemed to be join in progress – by the show or by El Rey, it wasn’t clear.) Rey said much the same he said to Chavo Sr. last week – Rey’s got big things to do in Lucha Underground and he doesn’t want to waste his time fighting Chavo Jr. again, so one of them has to go. Rey wants to stay, but proposed making a loser leaves lucha match next week to get rid of Chavo. Dario was fine with this. This seems to contiue a pattern of a match being announced for the following week each week.

One more match which appears to be coming, but we don’t know when, is Prince Puma versus Mil Muertes in a Grave Consequences match. To close the show, Vampiro congratulated Puma on beating Mil last week, but told him it wasn’t enough. Mil “sent Konnan to an early grave” by putting him in the casket way back in Season 1, and the only way Puma would ever make it even is to do the same to Mil. Puma was a little skeptical, noting Vampiro didn’t like Konnan at all. Vampiro emphatically agreed, but insisted he always respected Puma. I’m not sure about even that much; it’s clear Vampiro (and probably “Vampiro Vampiro and not “Ian Vampiro”, if there’s a distinction) is manipulating an easily fooled Prince Puma, but Vampiro’s ultimate goal aren’t clear.

We did find out someone’s ultimate goal. Dario caught up with Councilman Delgado, who revealed their big boss has fully descended. They both thought this was great news and I don’t know enough to disagree with them. Delgado explained more, and what I got from this is the big boss needs a new body to inhabit – some god is inhabiting Matanza’s body, now they need another one. Dario was one step ahead of the game here, explaining he had a couple candidates, really strong and powerful people, and he was having them determine who would be the host. Yea: the “ultimate opportunity” for the Cage/Texano feud is the winner rents out their body to an all powerful (possibly evil) god. Delgado handed over a mysterious package, probably having to do with making this happen, and definitely being the other gift of the gods referenced in the episode title. In the ring, Texano beat Cage to make the series two wins for Cage and one win for Texano, but I’m no sure either guy can actually ‘win’ this situation.

The opener was another woman vs man match; the women went 0-2 tonight on the scoreboard. Ivelisse lost much cleaner to Marty. Mariposa got involved, but Marty was too much crazy person for Ivelisse to handle. (Or for Melissa, who Marty creeped on before the match; the cameras shot her reacting negatively to Marty during the match too.) After the match, and for no apparent reason, Ivelisse’s new boyfriend Jeremiah hit the ring and attacked both Moths. This worked for about 30 seconds before the numbers got to him, and Ivelisse reluctantly made the save. Jeremiah and Ivelisse ran off the Moths, but Ivelisse was rather upset with Jeremiah for getting involved and continued to let him know after they had left the Temple. Jeremiah revealed Dario had offered to let him fight at the Temple – “It’s always been my dream to hurt people!” – and Ivelisse eventually was worn down enough to agree to it. The “good guys” on this show have remarkably bad instincts on who to trust – but then they’re in an underground fighting league run by Dario Cueto so they’re made many bad choices already.

Paul London revealed he was “found” by the Rabbit Tribe. He’s been the voice over all this time. They’re coming soon. OK.

I need to break things up here. Let’s do a one off feature

Things Matt Striker Actually Said

  • “raven haired Ivelisse” – Ivelisse currently has red hair. Ravens are black.

  • “The flame burns on the porch of destruction.”

  • noted they had done too many sports puns, immediately does a sports pun

  • “I don’t need to do the math for you” – he immediately then did the math

  • “Sexy Star is what Lucha Underground is all about.”

Thoughts

they did their best to hide how soon she bails
knee to the face?

Striker didn’t have the line of the night. That’s either Vampiro’s line at the end of the show, or this one to send it to the first match:

“If you are a fan of intergender wrestling, you don’t have to wait until the main event!”

Never has there been a more blatant trolling line on a wrestling show. That line was written to anger people. I haven’t been on Twitter tonight, but I’m assuming it worked as planned. The small issues is this entire show felt like a troll. If last week was everything people love about Lucha Underground, this was pretty close to everything that turns (some) people off from Lucha Underground. Vaguely distressing intergender wrestling, check! Unreal and sometimes hard to follow sci fi plotlines, check! Sexy Star being treated as a super wrestler while having bad matches, check and double check! The announcers, who treated the first half of Texano/Cage with disinterest because of the obvious certainty of the outcome, don’t even make the list this week. Striker’s line about Sexy Star being what Lucha Underground is about felt distressingly accurate during this show.

That main event. I don’t know. I think Sexy Star wouldn’t have put Sexy Star as over as strong Lucha Underground put her over tonight; they went over the top to make you know the result didn’t matter and Sexy is as great as ever. I kind of understand why, I know what’s coming and why they don’t want to diminish her going into it, but then maybe they shouldn’t have laid out a match where Mundo basically humiliates Sexy Star for about five minutes until the ref goes down. It was clear, not just from a “yow, Sexy Star’s offense looks bad and she’s taking way too many steps” reality view that Sexy Star is not in Johnny Mundo’s league, but the match itself was so the opposite of the Sexy/Jack match for a long time. Sexy didn’t seem credible, and she didn’t come off as sympathetic – not while trying to be strong in the skit with the vignette, not by whining to the referee about not getting the three count. (The announcers tried to cover for Sexy Star’s early ineptitude by explaining Sexy doesn’t really get going until she gets hit, but if the concept is that the domestic violence survivor only can find strength when she’s physically attacked – no no no this is a terrible concept, I need a new paragraph to cleanse myself of this.)

There’s obviously something Lucha Underground sees in Sexy Star as a face, but they’ve failed to communicate that in her actions and are relying on people projecting their own feelings onto her. That’s really hard for me to do with the last decade plus I’ve seen of Sexy Star. This was supposed to be a moment where we hated Johnny Mundo for stealing the title away from victimized Sexy Star, but the difference in talent between them is so obvious and the match itself was so ridiculous that I just hated the whole thing.

(Having the Mack make the save was a nice touch, anyway.)

This show can be bipolar. Vampiro leading into the opener by pushing the idea of this great intergender concept, and the story of the match itself being a win for Marty because he’s much bigger and a man and maybe making Ivelisse wrestler intergender (or at least people twice her size) is really actually dumb – which way did they want it? Ivelisse did pin Mil, on a surprise roll up after interference spot went bad (something that could’ve been referenced here but was not), but that’s now even more clearly positioned as a fluke. And, in the end, it’s clearly set up where Ivelisse is going to need Jeremiah’s help to win this battle against the Moths, because she’s not enough to do it on her own. I’m not sure what the alternative is (Ivelisse choking out a still hurt Marty in the first match, Mariposa beating Ivelisse in the second to make it more about numbers), but if the concept of the intergender is that the women are just as capable as the men, then this episode was fighting back against that concept. Ivelisse wasn’t as good as Marty, Sexy Star wasn’t as good as Mundo until she was suddenly overwhelming much better than Mundo. The words don’t match up to the acts if you pay attention.

Cage and Texano got the most time so far, and smartly used the early portion to brawl outside instead of going for lots of near falls. It was going to get the crowd to care for a while because the outcome isn’t in doubt – that’s why you make these 1-1 after two matches, so there’s only one dead match instead of two – but they did enough that the fans got into by the end. The announcers themselves went from a little bit of goofing around and not being into it (I’m pretty sure Vampiro pronounced both guys to be the least nervous in the first two minutes) to enjoying the last few minutes. These matches aren’t knocking me dead, but they are improving. The fifth match should be something, which I wasn’t sure about before.

I wish the announcers would find something else to talk about than hooking the leg. It’s so repetitive, it doesn’t help the wrestlers get over the match, and it’s so repetitive.

The vignettes were all generally good. I don’t have a big problem with the god possessing the winner of the Best of 5 deal, but I could only think about how that was going to push people’s buttons while watching it. Prince Puma’s was portrayed as someone Konnan could manipulate in season 1, so Vampiro doing the same isn’t a stretch. There’s still more Rabbit Tribe footage in the trailer that we haven’t seen, so I don’t actually have much hope we’ll see them soon. I wish there was some follow up on the Killshot bit from last week, but that’s the issue with having only 44 minutes to work with a week. (Still, I’d been happy to take a couple away from that main event.)

No battle royal, tecnicos vs rudos. Eliminations: Esfinge (Bobby Z), Vangellys (Valiente), Blue Panther (Gran Guerrero), Bobby Z (Atlantis), Gran Guerrero (Valiente), Stuka (La Mascara), La Mascara (Atlantis), Atlantis (Hechicero) and Valiente (Hechicero, hooking the ropes with his legs for leverage), leaving Hechicero as the (a bit surprise) winner. Hechicero faces Rey Bucanero next week.
5) Diamante Azul, Máscara Dorada, Mistico b Ephesto, Luciferno, MephistoLUCHA LIBRE MARTES DE NUEVOS VALORES EN LA ARENA MEXICO 25 DE OCTUBRE DEL 2016 (posted by VideosOficialesCMLL)
Tecnicos won in straight falls and challenged the rudos to a trios title match. The rudos said no. (It’s happening.) Mascara Dorada challenged the rudos to a 3v3 mask match. (Not happening.)

Hechicero invaded the announce area and stood on the table to stare Rey Bucanero down after his win. Bucanero was doing commentary and got the crowd on his side. Later, Hechicero got the promo backstage.

The chances of that tecnico team becoming trios champions is roughly about zero (and would be even without Mascara Dorada being otherwise signed.) You’d like Dorada’s run to end with a big match, and that’s kind of a big match, but we still have no idea.

5) Pagano b Psycho Clown
hardcore match, with a barbed wire board coming into play
6) Akebono, Marufuji, Rey Mysterio Jr. b Brian Cage, Pentagón Jr., Texano Jr.

Attendance was said to be 1,619, which looked full and is a clear success. Akebono was credited with putting this show together and asked Misterio and Marufuji if they’d like to come back and do it again next year. They both agreed. The show is scheduled to air on Samurai TV on 11/01. There’s no reports about the matches, but it sounds like it was a good show.

Previously, some of the AAA wrestlers visited the Mexican embassy in Japan and went to Shibuya. Mysterio is sticking around an extra day as part of the talk show he’s doing, and many of the rest are flying back to work TV on Friday.

Lucha Underground tonight is episode 8 of the season, “Gifts of the Gods”

  • Sexy Star (c) vs Johnny Mundo for the Gift of the God championship (video)
  • Texano [0] vs Cage [2], match 3
  • Ivelisse vs Marty Martinez

The preview also mentions Rey will ask Dario for a favor, which should not be hard to figure after last week. Also, we’re promised another Councilman Delgado appearance.

CultIcon previews the show. Lucha Underground will begin on TNT Serie in Germany on December 10. It’ll air on Saturdays at 10:40pm, with German match commentary and sub-titles for the vignettes.

MT Lucha has the second edition of their weekly lucha recap. There’s also an interview with Sexy Star, but they completely lose me when Sexy Star says she has no idea why she’s not with AAA. It’s probably notable that she’s playing nice with them but I don’t care.

Oro died 23 years ago today.

LuchaWorld has the latest News Update.

+LuchaTV put up the complete Rey Escorpion/Caristico title match from the Cholo de Tijuana promotion.

AAA posted the January 2010 taping from Ecatepec. This show had a memorable destruction of the Vipers 2.0, who won by DQ after La Secta wouldn’t stop beating them. IIRC, half were never seen again, and the other half had one more match.

Super Fly is threatening to end Aerostar’s careerAerostar brought the same career versus career idea up on +LuchaTV, so this is probably not just an random idea. I’m not sure AAA can allow this, they can’t lose any more people.

An article on the Blue Demon Televisa TV show mentions the series is “10% reality, 90% fiction”. This is explained as a positive thing. This is not trying to be like the movies, but a fictionalized take on what the real life of Blue Demon could’ve been life (so he won’t be walking around fighting zombies in his mask, but unmasked and less zombies.) The show was originally hyped as airing on Televisa itself and may still, but that article instead mentions as a November 11th start date on Blim, a Televisa owned Netflix competitor (generally seen as weaker for having a small library.)

UNAM will have another lucha libre lecture on 10/28, entitled “La lucha libre en la actualidad” with Lola Gonzalez, Lady Apache and Dr. Jekyll. I think “La Actualidad” means “currently.” Both Gonzalez and Apache have had fascinating careers, but I’m not sure they’re great guests to talk about lucha currently unless a time machine is involved. The lecture will be at 1:30, there will be a women’s wrestling show at 3pm. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t get RobViper to go back to UNAM for this one.

Yesterday was the Mexico day of “people of small size“, so MedioTiempo has a column about minis and mascots, noting both AAA & CMLL need reinvigoration in that division.

Polvora says Bobby Z is not yet in the Revolucionarios, even as the same article notes Dragon Rojo said Bobby Z is in.

RIOT is running a show on 11/19 in Arena Femenil de Monterrey. Card so far:
1) Erik Ortiz vs Kamikaze
2) Ultimo Ninja vs Septimo Dragon

CMLL (TUE) 11/01/2016 Arena México
1) Bengala & Robin vs Apocalipsis & Espanto Jr.
2) Acero, Fantasy, Shockercito vs Demus 3:16, Pequeño Nitro, Pequeño Olímpico
3) Estrellita, La Vaquerita, Sanely vs La Comandante, La Seductora, Metálica
4) Atlantis, Blue Panther, Valiente vs Felino, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas
5) Rey Bucanero © vs Hechicero [NWA LH]

6) Ephesto, Luciferno, Mephisto © vs Diamante Azul, Máscara Dorada, Mistico [MEX TRIOS]
8th defense for the Hijos del Infierno

We still don’t know when Dorada is finishing. Mick Foley was in Mexico doing press for the December tour, and he has no idea either. But, if by some chance, this is the last night for Dorada, he’s going to leave CMLL and join WWE by being literally dragged to hell. Dia de Muertos is amazing.

I’ve talked myself into believe Hechicero is a slight favorite. He’s the Dia de Muertos spokesperson this year, which always seemed to work out will for Ultimo Guerrero. Bucanero only got this title because Diamante Azul was leaving, they haven’t had much of an idea for it since and Bucanero really shouldn’t be doing singles matches at this point. (I’m shocked he got up to four defenses.) Also, Hechicero is cool like I used to think Rey Bucanero was cool so I’m not thinking about this at all rationally. This title match would be happening the same time as Game 6 of the World Series, so it could be a spectacularly happy day or an all time crusher. Can’t wait!

Hey, another women’s match in Arena Mexico. I mean, if you want to think about it optimistically, there was a complaint that there’s too much CMLL to follow and CMLL’s helpfully taken care of that by making the first half of their cards really skippable. So much less CMLL to watch.

CMLL (TUE) 11/01/2016 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Metatrón & Neutrón vs Demonio Rojo & Mr. Trueno
2) Magnum, Soberano Jr., Stigma vs Joker, Puma, Tiger
3) Esfinge, Guerrero Maya Jr., Stuka Jr. vs Bobby Z, Sam Adonis, Virus
4) Johnny Idol, Marco Corleone, Máximo Sexy vs Cavernario, Euforia, Gran Guerrero
5) Rush vs Shocker

Guadalajara gets it’s own Dia de Muertos show, though I don’t think Shocker is cosplaying as a zombie. He’s just a little slow. This is where I need that scary dream vignette where Shocker’s nightmare is becoming ugly.

MDA (SUN) 11/27/2016 Arena Coliseo Monterrey
1) Lady Jaguar & Sexy Piscis vs La Gaviota & Lady Flammer
2) Ángel Dorado Jr., Babe Fox, the Tiger (Tamaulipas) vs Jesse, Pequeño Tekilita, Tekilita
3) Epydemius, Hijo de LA Park, Ninja Jr. vs Androide, Diluvio Negro I, Diluvio Negro II
4) Súper Muñeco, Súper Muñeco Jr., Súper Pinocho vs Coco Amarillo, Coco Azul, Coco Rojo
5) Groon XXX, Mr. Elektro, Xtreme Tiger vs Antifaz, LA Park, Lizmark Jr.
6) Delta vs Galactar [mask]

Delta’s favored to win the mask match, but it’s not impossible that he’s decided to leave wrestling after leaving CMLL and this is the end. Galactar has been getting the better of Delta all the time until now, so it’s like 90% chance Delta is going to win this, but that’d usually be 95% or 98%. Fourth match is of note, because Box Y Lucha says Super Muneco & Super Pinocho are having problem as a team.
