Dragon Rojo step up plancha
Dragon Rojo step up plancha

Recapped: 10/10/2016

What happened: Dragon Rojo retained his title over Angel de Oro. Rush won the main event in straight falls, thanks to an inconsistent Tirantes performance.

What was good:  The only match I really watched closely was the semimain, and that’s worth checking out. Nothing else really stood out, though there were parts of the fourth match I liked

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s channel in full and has already aired on 52MX (though they skipped the main event)

Winner: tecnicos (2/3)
Match Time: 15:03
Notes: Astro wouldn’t go up for Sauron’s piledriver the first two times, Saurón delivered it badly on the third time, and Astro needed help to get back to his feet after the match. (He probably should’ve been put on a stretcher.) The cradle on Joker before it was a mess too.

Review: [great] much better than would’ve figured given those involved, but maybe I need to reevaluate my expectations. The 2016 slimmed down version of Dragon Rojo is significantly more agile – the larger guy isn’t doing springboard kicks, much less the big dive int his match – and is a more exciting wrestler in general. Angel de Oro was a bit behind him. His offense wasn’t as crisp (the stunner/kick/backcracker sequence looked practice run thru light) and even his big kickout of the double stomp looked weirdly slow and mistimed, but he was trying more here than he has been in other matches. This could’ve easily fallen into a CMLL title match cliché and they instead came with some different ideas and got an uninterested crowd into it by the end. There’s places to improve here and this is on the weaker side of a Great match, but I was left hoping they get a chance to take this match around the days of the week to get a chance to tighten it up. They earned another shot with this one.

Match 6: Marco Corleone, Pierroth, Rush vs Euforia, Máximo Sexy, Último Guerrero in a relevos increíbles match
Arena Puebla, 09/26/2016
Video:
VideosOficialesCMLL

  1. Team Rush
    • DQ Ultimo Guerrero [faked ref attack] (5:24)
  2. Team Rush
    • Rush foul Ultimo Guerrero (5:35)

Winner: Team Rush (1/2)
Match Time: 10:59
Notes: UG almost hit Tirantes, Tirantes turned around to cover up, Rush hit Tirantes in the back, and Tirantes turned around and blamed UG in the first fall. In the second fall, Rush fouled UG as he went for the senton de la muerte, then dropkick Tirantes for no real reason. Tirantes recovered to count the pin. It’s unclear why he didn’t DQ someone that time.
