Recapped: 10/08/2017

What happened: Negro Casas & Shocker kept the tag team titles by taking out Mistico’s knee. Ultimo Guerrero/Rush and Angel de Oro/Dragon Rojo matches were set up.

What was good: I really liked the main event and there was a lot of solid stuff in the undercard.

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s channel, and the Guerreros del Ring TV version has aired by the time you’re reading this (which curiously omitted the title match.)

Match Time: 15:12

Review: [not rated] I actually watched this one, but at double speed and not as paying attention as normal, so I didn’t get a rating. It’s somewhere in the OK range. Two things I did get: the match derailed a bit in the second fall when Guerrero Espacial took put Paris before Espíritu Maligno could get in his big corner spot (and so they had to bring in Centella Roja for a moment, get rid of him, and bring back Paris before they could move on.) Centella Roja also generally looked better than he did in his early appearances. Not good, but good enough that he wouldn’t bring down a match on his own and you could have a good match with enough other people. The first fall finish, Centella Roja missing a double springboard moonsault and then being pinned by a weak kick, was bizarre.

Match Time: 17:55

Review: [good] I sped thru this match at first, but it got good enough to slow down and watch. The Battilon seemed to be doing a lot more in this match than they have of late. They still didn’t give the técnicos a lot (and the técnicos seemed handcuffed by the limitations of segunda), but there was good action here and the Tigre Rojo middle rope armdrag spot really stood out. They really need to mix these two rudos in with the regular CMLL guys, just to see how it’d go.

    • Sangre Azteca counter dropkick Hombre Bala (5:23)

Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 16:51

Review: [good] I’ve seen most of the rest of the show live. This stood out the first time for all the Dinamitas double teams, and those hold up pretty well. They’re quick and agile, and they take so much of the match that Sangre has no time to spam him low blow dropkicks. The técnicos are a really good part of the match too, especially working together on the second fall finish, but generally making the rudos offense look very impressive. This is an unusually fun match for this low on the card.

Match 4: Ángel de Oro, Dragón Lee, Titán vs Bobby Z, Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora

  1. técnicos

  2. técnicos
    • Angel de Oro mecedora Dragon Rojo (6:34)

Winner: tecnicos (1/2)
Match Time: 12:!8
Notes: Angel de Oro set up a title match with Dragon Rojo next week.

Review: [good] this was a lot of fun! Dragon/Angel was the focus, but the other guys were really good and the match flew by. Pólvora kind of outshined his buddy, not by big spots but matching up well with the other two técnicos. (I kinda want to see a Dragon Lee/Polvora title match.) Dragon Lee was in the background but still stood out. The main feud didn’t thrilled, but it was good enough that I’m looking forward to getting to that title match.

Match 5: Marco Corleone, Pierroth, Rush vs Matt Taven, Máximo Sexy, Último Guerrero in a relevos increíbles match

  1. Team Rush
    • Pierroth powerslam Ultimo Guerrero (1:54)
  2. Team UG
    • Máximo inside cradle Pierroth (4:17)
    • Matt Taven springboard toe kick Marco Corleone (4:22)
  3. Team Rush
    • Rush foul UG (4:19)

Winner: Team Rush (1/3)
Match Time: 10:35
Notes: Match is build up to Rush/UG, with the oddity of Taven and Marco being on the ‘wrong’ sides (since UG is essentially a técnico the whole way thru.) UG gets a pin on Rush, Pierroth pulls out the referee, and Rush fouls UG for the win. Match is in the OK range.

Match 6: Negro Casas & Shocker © vs Mistico & Volador Jr. for the CMLL World Tag Team Championship
Arena Puebla, 09/19/2016
Video:
VideosOficialesCMLL

  1. rudos
    • Negro Casas casita Mistica (5:54)
    • Shocker tiburazon cradle Volador Jr. (5:59)
  2. técnicos
    • Volador backcracker Shocker (2:34)
    • Mistico casita Negro Casas (2:47)
  3. rudos
    • Negro Casas casita Volador (9:59)
    • Shocker reverse figure four Mistico (10:29)

Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 19:15
Notes: Negro Casas kicks Mistico’s knee at the end of the first fall, then traps his leg in a chair and kicks it a few times. Mistico is (very realistically) limping the rest of the way. Shocker attacks the knee between the second and third fall, and Mistico looks unable to continue. He does, though, with the rudos continue to target his knee.

Review: [great] even though it’s more obvious Mistico was working a knee injury on the rewatch, the match holds up pretty well. Body part selling is not done often in CMLL, and this match really makes a case to do it much more in big matches: Mistico sold his knee much better than you’d expect from him with his lack of experience, and the rudos (especially Shocker) were effective in attacking the knee. The técnicos got to look spectacular before the injury clicked in, and Volador came off as a superhero fighting off two guys at once. They had a lot of drama in the near falls, though it would’ve been nice if there was a little more between the eliminations. Shocker still had moments where he was standing around blankly waiting for moves, but this was as good as you’re going to get out of him in 2016 and they should be proud of getting this match out of it.
