Recapped: 09/10/16

What happened: Daga attacked Suicide again. Team Trump laid out Pentagon & Texano Jr. Carta Brava returned.

What was good: The opener was fun.

Where can I watch it: It’s on AAA’s channel.

Previously: Pagano beat Psycho Clown in a cage match, making Hijo del Tirantes the referee for their match at TripleMania. Mary refused to come back to El Apache.

AAA Rewind: a look back at the first AAA show in Veracruz.

Heroes Inmortales promos air thru the show, though no matches announced.

Match 1: Gotita de Plata, Lanzeloth, Venum vs Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Soul Rocker
Auditorio Benito Juárez, Veracruz, Veracruz, 08/19/2016
Video:
Lucha Libre AAAthecubsfan

Winner: rudos (Mocha Cota frog splash Lanzeloth)
Match Time: 8:55
Notes: Carta Brava Jr. is a surprise luchador. His outfit keeps his head covered up for a while, as if they’re keeping the massive surprise of Carta Brava under wraps. He quit the company in March as is making his return here.

The técnicos enter as a group and may be one.

Review: [good] fun opening match. They introduced the técnicos as a trio, and Gotita had neon green on his gear to match Venum, so maybe these guys were meant to be trio (at least for one day.) They all looked good, with Gotita de Plata flying well and taking a brutal fall to the outside. Venum was the best, getting thru some of his spots with ease. Carta Brava looks like he’s added some weight but it didn’t hurt his performance in this match. He may still be stuck in the openers forever, but he works well with these small flyers. These rudos are an odd collection of discarded characters and could use a new image, but they’re working very well. This was lacking some time to take it to a higher level for me, but it was still pretty enjoyable.

at least Gotita has 6 months to rest up before his next appearance

Match 2: Argenis, Australian Suicide, Bengala vs Dave The Clown, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Súper Fly
Auditorio Benito Juárez, Veracruz, Veracruz, 08/19/2016
Video:
Lucha Libre AAAthecubsfan

Winner: técnicos by DQ (Daga run-in)
Match Time: 9:32
Notes: Arturo immediately says Dave the Clown is a very good luchador, and announcers to make a point of hyping him strong during the match. Suicide has the match won Dave the Clown when Daga runs in, attacks him with a chair, and grabs him in a bodyscissors choke. Suicide is out, but Piero gives him the DQ win. Daga takes Suicide’s mask again.

Review: [ok] Lacked the energy of the previous match, even with more experienced guys. It wasn’t horrible, but it just never seemed to really get going. Dave the Clown is not a very good luchador. Dave was so out of position on the finish that Suicide stopped and pointed to the spot where Dave was supposed to be. Super Fly & Pirata did a lot of double teaming while Dave stood to the side or set them up, and he had a bad take of a headscissors against Bengala early on.

Match 3: Pentagón Jr. & Texano Jr. vs El Mesías & Hernandez
Auditorio Benito Juárez, Veracruz, Veracruz, 08/19/2016
Video:
Lucha Libre AAAthecubsfan

Winner: Pentagon & Texano Jr.
Match Time: 11:45
Notes: Taya is with Pentagon, and also wearing her Worldwide Underground bandanna on head. Taya clings onto Pentagon through the match to an extent she really hasn’t done before with him. They blow the opening whistle and then Mesias decides it’s talking time. Mesias explains to Hernandez how bad Veracruz is even by the standards of Mexico – all the people smell like fish. Mesias is very serious about this. Pentagon and Texano wait for Mesias to get done praising Donald Trump before attacking (and my time starts form there, after a couple minutes of talking.) They deviate from normal and work a US tag style match, with Texano stuck in the ring for a long time before finally being able to tag Pentaogn. Rudos tie Pentagon to the ropes, foul Texano, then unmask Pentagon. They shove Piero around and threaten to beat up Taya, but don’t really do anything to her before Texano gets his lasso.

Review: [ok] disappointing. Having Texano & Pentagon work as técnicos is always going to be a challenge, and they ended up using them as normal técnicos rather than work a more rudo/rudo style. It was fascinating to see what a Pentagon Jr. hot tag looks like, but the novelty didn’t really care it. Mesias & Hernandez didn’t do a whole lot with a whole bunch of time. The finish was really cold and made the match kind of useless. They’re really relying on the Trump stuff to carry some middling matches in this feud. I think they got the crowd into some, but I didn’t really care.
