CMLL Martes Mexico: 2016-08-16

Recapped: 08/16/2016

What happened: Not much. Ultimo Guerrero got away with a foul on Volador in the main event.

What was good: That same main event, and the third trios match. The second match and the lightning match had some moments.

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s channel.

Match 1: Leono & Sensei vs Espanto Jr. & Inquisidor
Arena México, 08/16/2016

  1. rudos
    • Inquisidor reverse figure four Leono (6:39)
    • Espanto Jr. top rope splash Sensei (7:18)
  2. técnicos
    • Leono motocicelta Inquisidor (2:48)
    • Senseilock on Esapnto Jr. (3:15)
  3. tecnicos
    • Sensei crossrmrebaker Inquisdior (2:54)
    • Leono stretch muffler Espanto Jr. (3:15)

Winner: técnicos (2/3)
Match Time: 13:48

Review: [below average] An unexpectedly violent match, with guys being reckless with each other. It gave me a couple things for GIFs, but it was not a good looking match. Espanto Jr. had energy, just not directed in any positive way. The other guys were about normal for an opener, which is not good.

Match 2: Oro Jr., Soberano Jr., Starman vs El Cuatrero, Sansón, Skándalo
Arena México, 08/16/2016

  1. técnicos
    • Soberano springboard moonsault Skandalo (6:47)
  2. rudos
    • Cuatrero enziguri Soberano (3:08)
    • Sansón springboard kneesmash Starman Jr. (3:52)
  3. técnicos
    • Oro Jr. short armscissors Sansón (4:25)
    • Sobreano Jr. guillotine moonsault Cuatrero (4:35)

Winner: técnicos (1/3)
Match Time: 15:14

Review: [ok] Fine for this level but you’re left wanting to see more of these guys. Too bad this couldn’t be a 2v2 match to skip the required Skandalo spots and keep the good guys in. Oro & Starman weren’t bad, but Soberano looks so much like a future star that he blew them out of the water. Sansón & Cuatrero added more new stuff in this match and are fun to see every time.

Match 3: Fuego, Guerrero Maya Jr., Rey Cometa vs Hechicero, Misterioso Jr., Sagrado
Arena México, 08/16/2016

  1. rudos
    • Hechicero legscissors facelock Guerrero Maya (5:15)
  2. técnicos
    • Fuego casadora cradle Misterioso (3:15)
  3. rudos
    • Sagrado Michinoku Driver Rey Cometa (8:30)
    • Misterioso kneebar Fuego (8:34)

Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 17:04

Review: [good] solid professional midcard match, where everything pretty much went right and they were able to continue on when it didn’t. It wasn’t the sharpest match and it was very familiar, but they got the high notes pretty well. The triple tope spot came off well, and the Guerrero Maya/Hechicero interactions were pretty solid. I don’t even know what to call Hechicero’s hold, but it was a pretty cool hold.

Match 4: Stuka Jr. vs Luciferno in a lightning match
Arena México, 08/16/2016

Winner: Stuka Jr. (torpedo splash)
Match Time: 6:33

Review: [ok] Stuka seemed shaken up after Luciferno’s dive – the rudo appeared to be stalling for time when they got back in the ring – and then Stuka landed a giant tope and a moonsault to boot. You don’t know with these guys. It was kind of a simple match after that, and there’s nothing else big to check out here, but at least the right guy won. Luciferno does seem to offer more in the lightning matches than in the trios, for whatever reason.

Match 5: Mr. Niebla, Shocker, Terrible vs Ángel de Oro, Johnny Idol, Titán
Arena México, 08/16/2016

  1. rudos
    • superbomb on Titan (4:52)
    • Shocker takedown Johnny Idol (5:12)
  2. tecnicos
    • Angel de Oro mecedora Mr. Niebla (3:20)
    • Johnny Idolo casita Shocker (3:20)
  3. rudos
    • Mr. Niebla top rope splash Angel de Oro (6:43)

Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 15:15

Review: [ok] very much A Match. They did some stuff, some of it was good, most of it was killing time. Terrible and Titan matched up well again, and Terrible didn’t care too much about taking it easy on the guy going to Japan. The spot where Johnny Idol punched Shocker and Terrible and then they both calmly stood in place while waiting for Idol to do a plancha was fairly bad.

Match 6: Máscara Dorada, Rush, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Niebla Roja, Último Guerrero
Arena México, 08/16/2016

  1. Guerreros
    • W Guerrera (3:35)
  2. técnicos
    • Rush corner dropkick Gran Guerrero (2:16)
    • Mascara Dorada torito Euforia (2:19)
  3. Guerreros
    • Ultimo Guerrero foul Volador (3:16)

Winner: Guerreros (1/3)
Match Time: 9:10

Review: [good] Not as great as you’d expect it to be on a different show and not nearly as long but acceptably entertaining for a main event. They started off really well and, if the brawling to start and finish is an indication, another Voaldor/ultimo Guerrero match should be pretty good. Rush is clearly not going full speed on these Tuesday shows, but neither is anyone else. Mascara Dorada half speed still means he’s doing a running charge down the ramp into a headscissors. Gran Guerrero challenged Rush a few times and lived. I had no problems with this.

  1. I want to say the Hechicero hold was a modified abdonimal stretch into a cross face, but I also want to call it the really original Hechicero hold.
