Atlantis gets landed on, Dorada flies
Atlantis gets landed on, Dorada flies

Recapped: 08/08/2016

What happened: Shocker beat UG, and challenged him to a title match next week. Black Tiger wants a mask match with Ares. The semimain set up a rematch as well.

What was good: The semimain was the best match on the show. I didn’t mind the main event as much as I’d thought and the opener was actually good.

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s channel.

Match 1: Centella Roja, Millenium, París vs Akuma, Espíritu Maligno, Inquisidor
Arena Puebla, 08/08/2016

  1. rudos
    • Inquisidor reverse figure four Paris (6:50)
    • Espíritu Maligno La Alejandrina Millenium (7:14)
  2. tecnicos
    • Centrella Roja moonsault bodyblock Espíritu Maligno (2:44)
    • Millneium senton Akuma (2:44)
  3. rudos
    • Akuma powerbomb Centella Roja (2:36)
    • Paris octopus cradle Akuma (2:56)
    • Inquisidor valagueza frontcracker Millenium (4:20)

Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 14:38

Review: [good] A better pace and more active then it looked in the lineup. This was above average by the standards of this crew, if only barely so in general. I didn’t feel like I wasted my time watching it, which is a marked improvement. Guys like Inquisidor and Akuma were perfectly fine and not dragging this match down. Centela Roja is still slow and fraught with peril, but still somehow had one of his better outings. There was some not great moments (Akuma & Paris fell apart on their finish), but this was a step forward from usual.

Match 2: Arkalis, Pegasso, Tigre Rojo Jr. vs Arkángel de la Muerte, Espanto Jr., Policeman
Arena Puebla, 08/08/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Arkalis kneebar Policeman (8:42)
    • Pegasso top rope splash Espanto Jr. (9:07)
    • Arkalis cradle Arkangel de la Muerte (9:07)
  2. rudos
    • Arkangel de la Muerte crab Pegasso (4:47)
  3. rudos
    • Arkangel reversed sunset flip Pegasso (4:47)

Winner: rudos (2/3)
Match Time: 18:41

Review: [below average] This one more lived up to the hype. Or down to the hype. They lost me in the excruciating long and boring opening fall, seemingly an Arkangel trademark, and never did much to get me back. Espanto Jr. should have to change his name to something else, he’s making people forget there used to be a very good Espanto Jr. I could not name two good things the younger one did this match. Pegasso and Arkangel matched each other on horrendous looking top rope spots at the end of the first and second fall (though at least Pegasso might have had the excuse of Arkangel himself getting in the way; Arkangel just does his low blow axhandle without caring how bad it looks.) They did not screw up the third fall finish, but they got no reaction for the sunset flip out of nowhere.

Match 3: Black Tiger, Titán, Stigma vs Ares, Bobby Z, Virus
Arena Puebla, 08/08/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Black Tiger casadora cradle Virus (5:25)
  2. rudos
    • Virus dropkick Stigma (3:01)
    • Ares top rope splash Black Tiger (3:25)
  3. rudos
    • Bobby Z powerbomb Stigma (4:25)
    • Black Tiger huracanrana Bobby Z (5:42)
    • Ares powerbomb Black Tiger (6:21)

Winner: rudos (2/3)
Match Time: 15:11
Notes: Stigma replaced Triton. Black Tiger and Ares feuded, with Tiger asking for a mask match afterwords. Ares seemed agreeable.

Review: [ok] The first couple of moments of this match were Virus and Titan fighting at a high level, which seemed very promising. That ended quick, and it turned into the same type of Black Tiger focused match we’ve been getting for months. Solid, if generally boring. He and Ares feuded generically, have no evident chemistry but surely have a mask match coming. (Ares and Tiger do a lot of staring at each other, generally having much more timing problems than you’d expect.) Everyone else was pretty secondary to them, and better than them when they had a moment to shine. This was not near as dire as the last match, but giving it an OK seems slightly generous.

Match 4: Atlantis, Máscara Dorada, Mistico vs Cavernario, Felino, Mr. Niebla
Arena Puebla, 08/08/2016

  1. rudos
    • Cavernario suplex Mistico (3:54)
  2. técnicos
    • Atlantis casadora cradle Mr. Niebla (1:51)
    • Mascara Dorada casita Felino (1:51)
  3. técnicos
    • DQ Cavernario [foul to Mistico] (6:09)

Winner: técnicos (2/3)
Match Time: 11:54
Notes: Negro Casas was replaced by Mr. Niebla. A Mistico attempt at the end went well, but he and Cavernario just slugged each other until Caveranrio fouled Mistico and took his mask. Dorada demanded a rematch next week. Cavernario and Dorada antagonized the crowd.

Review: [good] Exciting action packed trios match. Mistico and Mascara Dorada both looked superb in their flying, with Dorada coming off a star when he making Peste Negra look foolish. The rudos worked hard setting up the técnicos, with the series of Atlantis backbreakers a highlight. Mr. Niebla looked much better than usual, taking some tricky stuff without a problem. Cavernario violently beating Mistico, even as a cover for them screwing up La Mistica, is a pretty good setup for Mistico comebacks. They should have a good singles match if it should go that far, and the crowd was into Mistico tonight.

Match 5: Marco Corleone & Último Guerrero vs Sharlie Rockstar & Shocker in a relevos increíbles match
Arena Puebla, 08/08/2016

  1. Marco & UG
    • Marco Corleone splash Shocker (2:03)
    • Ultimo Guerrero senton de la muerte Sharlie Rockstar (2:25)
  2. Shocker & Sharlie
    • Shocker middle rope elbow drop Ultimo Guerrero 5043-5252
    • Sharlie Rockstar El Pozo Marco Corleone 5309
  3. Shocker & Sharlie
    • Marco suplex Sharlie Rockstar (3:51)
    • Shocker rolled thru plancha Marco Corleone (4:20)
    • Shocker Dos Caras Clutch Ultimo Guerrero (4:41)

Winner: Shocker & Sharlie (2/3)
Match Time: 9:32
Notes: Shocker challenged Ultimo Guerrero for his “light heavyweight” championship. Ultimo Guerrero agreed, saying he taught Shocker how to wrestle and would give him a wrestling lesson again. The announcers acknowledged Shocker’s verbal typo.

Review: [ok] better than I thought it would be because they kept it moving fast and didn’t go too long. This setup called for a quick match, and brawling from the start let them get there. Sharlie was not a big part of this match, but was moving around well when he was in, and Marco played his role well. I don’t think it’s any kind of good idea to put Shocker in singles match, but maybe they’ll keep it on the mat a lot and do a quick match to work around it.
