La Mascara
La Mascara

Recapped: 07/29/2016

What happened: La Mascara defeated Dragon Lee in straight falls, though once by a fluke DQ and once by cheating. Super Crazy defeated Rey Bucanero cleanly again, continuing their issue. Mistico was hurt early on in his match and his status is unknown.

The last three matches were all quick, and this was the quickest ending Friday show (under 2 hours) in recent memory.

What was good:  I liked the first half of this card, with the second match being the best on the show. It stopped being a good show once Mistico got hurt and never recovered.

Where can I watch it: It’ll be up on my channel at least by Tuesday.

Winner: tecnicos (1/3)

Review: [good] this one flew by. It felt a lot shorter than it was (maybe helped by me being distracted during parts of this.) Match was otherwise a normal minis match, helped by both teams knowing each other well and just going from spot to spot to spot. They kept up a good pace and generally hit their spots, though it felt like they weren’t hitting things perfectly.

Match Time: 17:05

Review: [good] Exciting match, about as good it gets for a normal Tuesday segunda. The last couple of appearance have shown how much Raijin & Fujin have been missed from these shows; they’re really good, and ought to be used in bigger matches by now. They’re ready, looking good both on offense and in positioning for the trickier técnico moves. Pegasso did not have a strong night, messing up the first fall finish and looking just a little less agile than he needed to be the rest of the way, but Oro stepped it and fit in here. Soberano was that star, being super athletic and impressive with just about everything he did.

    • Super Crazy Ephesto Roll Rey Bucanero (4:38)

Winner: Elite (1/3)
Match Time: 9:08

Review: [good] much better than last week, and the best this feud has been. This was actualy exciting, and not something to endure. Rey Bucanero and Super Crazy actually did do a lot, but they did well against each other when they did. The finish was really well done, Crazy looking out of it when he missed a moonsault but still cradling Rey when he took too long. Sharlie Rockstar moved a lot better than he has in his other matches, though his headscissors to the floor was probably a little bit ambitious. Golden Magic did just enough craziness to stand out, even if he got pinned again.

Match 4: Máscara Dorada, Mistico, Valiente vs Cavernario, Felino, Negro Casas
Arena México, 07/29/2016

  1. técnicos
    • Mistico casita Negro Casas (2:45)
  2. Peste Negra
    • Negro Casas casita Valiente (2:11)
    • Barbaro Cavernario mammoth dropkick Mascara Dorada (2:41)
  3. Peste Negra
    • Felino top rope elbow drop Mascara Dorada (0:57)
    • Negro Casas casita Valiente (1:59)

Winner: Peste Negra (2/3)
Match Time: 7:25
Notes: Mistico’s arm apparently pops up of his shoulder again during triple dives around 2 minutes in. He continues, but slowly applies the finishing casita and needs help from his partners. Mistico disappears while they show replays and never turns. The last two falls wrap up abnormally quick

Review: [ok] almost not worth rating, because the match stopped existing after the Mistico injury. This had the potential to be pretty cool, and the first two minutes were great, but that was it. They just discontentedly rushed to an ending as soon as it was clear Mistico would not be returning. You just hope he’s not that hurt and they get another shot at this soon.

Match 5: Dragón Lee vs La Máscara

Arena México, 07/29/2016

  1. DQ Dragon Lee [unmask La Mascara] (3:02)
  2. La Mascara foul (3:32)

Winner: La Mascara (1/2)
Match Time: 6:34
Notes: Dragon Lee, in the midst of arguing with Edgar while untying La Mascara’s mask, accidentally pulled it off for the first fall DQ. He was not happy with the call. La Mascara weakly shoved Edgar in the second fall, distracting him from a heel kick foul. Dragon Lee again challenges La Mascara to a mask match, and again La Mascara ends up unmasking him.

Review: [ok] Dragon Lee got to do some moves, and we’re supposed to want to see La Mascara lose because he cheats a lot. The match had Dragon Lee doing cool moves and La Mascara occasionally kicking him in the face; if this was an Anniversary preview, it’s not a great sign. If this was build up to see La Mascara for an Anniversary match, it wasn’t a great build.

Match 6: Marco Corleone, Máximo Sexy, Volador Jr. vs Shocker, Terrible, Último Guerrero
Arena México, 07/29/2016

  1. técnicos
    • Máximo kiss cradle Ultimo Guerrero (4:55)
    • Máximo half crab Terrible (4:56)
  2. rudos
    • Ultimo Guerrero front superplex Volador Jr. (3:21)
  3. técnicos
    • Marco Corleone Aero Italia (1:36)

Winner: técnicos (1/3)
Match Time: 9:53

Review: [ok] your standard main event trios match, same as you would see on Tuesday, except with a much more responsive crowd. Most of this was Máximo comedy, playing off Ultimo Guerrero and playing off Marco for kissing La Comandante. They kept it simple, which worked for that audience but was a disappointing end to a show with two straight unsatisfactory matches prior to this one. You wouldn’t have any idea there was an anniversary show coming up in five weeks from this, they did nothing to build to anything (which I’d guess lessens the possibility of a cage match.)
