Ultimo Dragoncito drives Demus into the barricade
Ultimo Dragoncito drives Demus into the barricade

Recapped: 07/22/2016

What happened: La Mascara won the Leyenda de Plata. Rey Bucanero and Super Crazy have issues.

What was good: The Sky Team/Guerreros match was superb. The minis match was strong, and everything was (but the main event) was better than it seemed on paper.

Where can I watch it: I’ll have it on my channel Tuesday. The main event is on Claro’s website.

Review: [ok] nothing special at all, and the last couple minutes stuck out as not particularly smooth, but worked at a better pace than usual with no dramatically poor moments. They kept them to a little shorter time than these matches have been going of late, and that helps when there’s not a lot they can do. Match just wasn’t as annoying as usual. Cholo even broke out a new hold.

Cholo's new move!

Match 2: Astral, Eléctrico, Último Dragóncito vs Demus 3:16, Mercurio, Pierrothito
Arena México, 07/22/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Eléctrico springboed elbow drop Demus (5:21)
    • Ultimo Dragoncito grounded octupus Mercurio (6:18)
  2. rudos

    • Ultimo Dragoncito huracanrana Pierrothito (4:44)

Winner: técnicos (1/3)
Match Time: 15:14

Review: [great] Surprisingly strong minis match, with the guys working hard and having the handcuffs off to a bit. The Dragoncito dive in the particular came off huge because it looked great and no one was expecting. These sides have worked so many times against each other that they should be good all time time, but this time they really were, working noticeably harder than before. There was a little bit of roughness and it slowed down slightly in the third fall, but they finished well. This is one of the CMLL minis matches of the years.

Match 3: Rey Bucanero, Shocker, Terrible vs Golden Magic, Sharlie Rockstar, Súper Crazy
Arena México, 07/22/2016

  1. CMLL
    • TGR superbomb Golden Magic (2:03)
    • Shocker middle rope elbow drop (2:25)
  2. Elite
    • Golden Magic huracanrana Shocker (3:08)
    • Sharlie Rockstar El Pozo Terrible (3:10)
  3. Elite
    • DQ Rey Bucanero [foul on Super Crazy] (4:50)

Winner: Elite (2/3)
Match Time: 10:25

Review: [ok] Better than I thought it was going to be. The feud still doesn’t connect, but the Elite guys did a lot to make the best of this. Sharlie looked better here than he did on Monday, even if I was scared he was going to brain himself onto the barricade. Magic didn’t quite fit in this match and falling badly didn’t help him, but he wasn’t a total loss. Crazy threw himself into his moonsault on Bucanero and they both want this to be some sort of deal, but it’s so random it hurts.

Match 4: Atlantis, Diamante Azul, Stuka Jr. vs Ephesto, Luciferno, Mephisto
Arena México, 07/22/2016

  1. Hijos del Infierno
    • Ephesto Roll on Atlantis (3:10)
  2. técnicos
    • Stuka hiptoss into the corner Luciferno (2:20)
    • Diamante Azul side slam Ephesto (2:35)
  3. tecnicos
    • Stuka torpedo splash Ephesto (5:20)
    • Luificieno huracanrana Stuka (5:44)
    • Atlantida on Mephisto (6:22)

Winner: tecnicos (2/3)
Match Time: 12:07

Review: [good] Stuka’s still in ROH form, and Atlantis felt like doing two dives, so this was pretty watchable. They did a couple of surprise (or badly explained) outcomes to keep the fans on the toes; the fans mostly got lost at the last one. Diamante Azul is not very good, but the announcers were gushing over him as usual. The big that set up the torpedo splash was the opposite of good.

Match 5: Mistico, Valiente, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero
Arena México, 07/22/2016

  1. Guerreros
    • Tormento Guerrero (2:53)
  2. Sky Team
    • Volador top rope headscissors Euforia (3:00)
    • Valiente Buster on Gran Guerrero (3:11)
  3. Sky Team
    • La Mistica on Ultimo Guerrero (6:21)

Winner: Sky Team (2/3)
Match Time: 12:25

Review: [great] They’ve rolled out this match or something like it many times now, and this might be the best possible match of the group. The Sky Team was hitting on all gears with nothing stopping them. Something did go wrong with Volador & Euforia near the end, but it still ended up with Volador diving into the crowd onto Euforia. Euforia is always really good, but he was taking every huge move in this match, from that crowd dive to the top rope frankensteiner from Volador to the tallest possible careta headscissors from Mistico. This was missing a little bit of drama, but could see going high on the grade. They need to come up with more for the Sky Team to do while they have something.

Match 6: Negro Casas vs La Máscara in a CMLL’s Leyenda de Plata Tournament match
Arena México, 07/22/2016

  1. La Mascara running double knee smash (1:53)
  2. Negro Casas scorpion (1:02)
  3. La Mascara unseen foul (5:25)

Winner: La Mascara
Match Time: 8:20
Notes: Tiger and Terrible are seconds. La Mascara kicked Tigre down at ringside, Tiger argued with Tirantes, and Mascara snuck in the foul. Mascara snuck in a kick on Casas after the match.

Review: [ok] this didn’t feel fraudulent as a match, but it also wasn’t much of one. Casas got some near falls, enjoyed it a bit, and then they did the interference spot to end it. Crowd booed, but it didn’t develop enough to mean much of anything. It was going to be tough following the previous match, but this wasn’t a strong attempt. It also didn’t come off with a particularly strong win; Mascara won when Tiger did something dumb.
