Elgin wins international Elite tournament, UG up next?

ELITE (SAT) 06/25/2016 Arena México [+LuchaTV, CMLL, SuperLuchas]
1) Puma & Tiger b Emperador Azteca & Metaleón
Announced as Puma/Tiger, changed to Euforia/Gran Guerrero, ended up being Puma/Tiger.
2) Michael Elgin b Lio Rush [Elite Internacional, quarterfinal]
3) Kushida b DJZ [Elite Internacional, quarterfinal]
4) Volador Jr. b Tama Tonga [Elite Internacional, quarterfinal]
5) Bram b Sabú [Elite Internacional, quarterfinal]
6) Volador Jr. b Kushida [Elite Internacional, semifinal]
7) Michael Elgin b Bram [Elite Internacional, semifinal]
8) Michael Elgin b Volador Jr. [Elite Internacional, final]
They did a big presentation with flags and national anthems before the final. Longest match. Good match. Elgin got a belt (though it’s meant to be an annual competition and not something to defend.) Volador said his team would avenge the loss in the Gran Prix on Friday.

Results are kind of what I expected; they weren’t going to get NJPW to have both champions lose in the same tournament. Volador/Kushida seems like the direction, maybe on that last Friday Kushida’s around (07/15), but no one’s outright made the challenge yet.

Attendance doesn’t sound like it was any better. The preliminary rounds were said to be short but good, with the main event getting more time and very good. All the tournament matches should air next Friday night on Elite’s Lucha Azteca show. Elite will probably be off this week. After that, who knows. The optimistic way of looking at it is, if Elite just keeps resumes running on July 7th, then it shows they’re immune to business concerns and will continue on as long as the people in charge are still interested in the project.

CMLL (SUN) 06/26/2016 Arena México [CMLL]
1) Bengala & Leono b Artillero & Camorra
2) Hombre Bala Jr., Magnus, Mr. México Jr. b Black Scorpió, Canelo Casas, Hijo del Signo
Debuts for Mr. Mexico and Black Scorpio
3) Misterioso Jr., Okumura, Virus b Fuego, Pegasso, Tritón
4) Pierroth, Tama Tonga, Tangaroa b Máximo Sexy, Stuka Jr., Volador Jr.
5) Kushida, Marco Corleone, Michael Elgin DQ Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero
Euforia tossed his mask to Marco for the DQ.

Rush didn’t make Arena Coliseo Monterrey show tonight. I’ll talk about that, and other things, tomorrow. (But maybe late tomorrow.)

NJPW announces the G1 field late tonight. There’s been no rumors of CMLL involvement but it’s not impossible.

Black Terry Jr. has highlights of the four way tag match, Puma & Tiger vs Los Traumas and Volador & Bandido vs Flamita & Fly Warrior from CaraLucha. He’s also updated the list of matches he’s selling (which of course include those three.)

A man in Cordoba, Veracruz has been arrested for a murder at a movie theater on June 12. However, the promoter of lucha shows at Arena San Miguel believes the police have the wrong man – because the guy in jail was wrestling on a show as the masked Demonio Rojo Jr. at the same time as the murder.

Blue Demon Jr. wants the government to donate or share a permanent structure for a lucha libre museum.

Joe Lider likes ladder matches.

Lineup

CMLL (SUN) 07/03/2016 Arena México
1) Flyer & Sensei vs Akuma & Inquisidor
2) Marvel, Oro Jr., Soberano Jr. vs Fiero, Fujin, Raijin
3) Guerrero Maya Jr., Stuka Jr., Titán vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Hechicero, Pólvora
4) Marco Corleone vs Euforia
5) Diamante Azul, Shocker, Último Guerrero vs Michael Elgin, Tama Tonga, Tangaroa

Marco/Euforia went from 0 to 60 quick. Main event is Mexico vs Foreign Legion. WON reported the plan was for a UG/Elgin title match at some point, and this would seem to set it up for 07/10 (as Elgin is gone by the 17th.)

More debuts! Fiero is an Mexico city indie guy who’s appeared, of note, IWRG and Toyrumon shows. He’s good. I’m not sure who this Marvel is – it could be the Guadalajara local getting an unexpected callup to Mexico City, since he’s hasn’t been around much. He was working early matches in 2014 for a few months, disappeared, and the name reappeared this April for Sunday matches but not many of those.

CMLL (SUN) 07/03/2016 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Black Sugar vs Quca
2) Javier Cruz Jr. & Micro vs Destello & Destructor
3) Capitán Cobra, Fugaz, Randy vs Carlo Roggi, Demonio Rojo, Mr. Apolo
4) El Divino, Frezzer, Star Black vs Gitano, Mr. Trueno, Rey Trueno
5) Esfinge, Mágico, Vaquero Jr. vs Furia Roja, Joker, Maléfico

The first unmasked match for the loser of the Esfinge/Furia Roja match on Tuesday.
