Recapped: 06/20/16

What happened: Maximo retained his title over Shocker. Cibernetico and Rush set up a singles match next week. Sam Adonis and Johnny Idol debuted.

What was good: I liked the third match the best. The title match didn’t work for me but it was better than I would’ve guessed.

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s channel.

Match 1: Milenium & Vega vs Guerrero Espacial & Inquisidor
Arena Puebla, 06/20/2016

  1. técnicos
    • Vega springboard huracarnanra Guerrero Espcial (7:07)
    • Milenium 450 splash Inquisidor (7:38)
  2. rudos
    • Guerrero Especial double foot pin submission Vega (2:08)
    • Inquisidor reverse figure four Millenium (2:46)
  3. rudos
    • Inquisidor valagueza Vega (4:11)
    • Guerrero Espacial kneeling Anibalina Milenium (4:32)

Winner: rudos (2/3)
Match Time: 14:56

Review: [ok] One sided match. Tecnicos looked good, rudos at most kept up with them. Inquisidor and Guerrero Espacial (except for his submissions) are pretty bland and did their best by being in the right spot for the tricky armdrags and headscissors. Vega looked spectacular – I really liked his first fall winning cradle, and he carried it onto the second fall as well. Hopefully he’ll be a regular here. Millenium was not bad, but didn’t stick out as much.

Match 2: Robin, Starman, Zaeta Roja vs Fuerza Chicana, King Jaguar, Policeman
Arena Puebla, 06/20/2016

  1. técnicos
    • Robin senton con giro Fuerza Chicana (8:08)
  2. rudos
    • King Jaguar Pulpo Starman (4:28)
  3. técnicos
    • Robin sit down powerbomb Policeman (3:17)
    • Starman suastica cradle Fuerza Chicana (3:39)

Winner: técnicos (1/3)
Match Time: 16:15

Review: [below average] thoughly boring match which went started out with an overlly long first fall and never really recovered. Fuerza Chicana didn’t seem to be on the same page as others at times. These rudos can be good with exciting técnicos, but the técnicos didn’t offer all that much. There were a couple bad slips, and Zaeta Roja seemed slower than usual.

Match 3: Blue Panther Jr., Rey Cometa, The Panther vs Fujin, Okumura, Raijin
Arena Puebla, 06/20/2016

  1. rudos
    • Raijin Shock Arrow Rey Cometa (4:14)
  2. tecnicos
    • The Panther springboard dropkick Okumura (2:47)
  3. técnicos
    • Blue Panther cradle suplex into a jackhammer Raijin (5:56)
    • Rey Cometa frog splash Fujin (6:38)

Winner: técnicos (2/3)
Match Time: 13:39
Notes: Rey Cometa was checked out for a neck injury after taking the package piledriver at the end of the first fall. He didn’t seem too hurt (and might have just been selling without the medics understanding) and continued on, but the second fall seemed to tall apart without him.

Review: [good] fun fight, at a fast pace. They were moving so quick that it felt like they had much less time than the boring match then one which preceeded it, but it kept going and going while still being fun to watch. Everyone had their moments; Cometa was the best guy in the match, but even a guy like Blue Panther Jr. is showing some improvements. Raijin & Fujin can handle these type of action packed matches, which says good thigns about them. The match did get a little lost without Cometa in the second fall, but the third fall (and the abudance of near endings) made up for it.

Match 4: Máximo Sexy © vs Shocker for the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship
Arena Puebla, 06/20/2016

  1. Shocker STF (4:05)
  2. Máximo half crab (2:28)
  3. Máximo double kiss cradle (11:21)

Winner: Máximo (2/3)
Match Time: 17:54
Notes: Seconds are Robin and Policeman. Máximo hurt his knee on a Shocker dropkick in the third fall and limped the rest of the way

Review: [ok] they leaned into the slowness of the match by setting up the Máximo knee injury, something he’s done in his other big matches. It allowed for the best possible match for Shocker, as both were moving the same (slow) speed. It didn’t totally work for me, as I still found it hard to believe Shocker would ever actually win, and Maximo’s knee injury went away when it was time for him to do his big spots. It was long way to go for that finish. Shocker kicking out of the finish at 2.9999 was not so great.

Match 5: Diamante Azul, Johnny Idol, Rush vs Cibernético, Sam Adonis, Último Guerrero
Arena Puebla, 06/20/2016

  1. técnicos
    • Diamante Azul German suplex Sam Adonis (3:06)
    • Johnny Idol springboard moonsault Ultimo Guerrero (3:12)
  2. rudos
    • Sam Adonis spinning side slam Johnny Idol (5:01)
    • Ultimo Guerrero Pulpo Guerrero Diamante Azul (5:05)
  3. rudos
    • Cibernético foul Rush (3:48)

Winner: rudos (2/3)
Match Time: 12:05
Notes: Tirantes was distracted on the foul. Cibernético talked trash. Rush wanted a hair versus hair match. Ciber didn’t really agree. Rush settled for a singles match

Review: [ok] More Cibernético/Rush build, with them actually interacting very little except for the finishes. Crowd doesn’t seem to have a strong favorite of the two, but leaned towards Rush. Match was otherwise alright. Adonis & Idol looked OK, but still getting used to the rhythm of things (and Idol would probably apprecaite if Adonis caught him on the next dive.) They should be fine in the Gran Prix and might be better than that with more time to get used to CMLL matches. Stating them out about two weeks before the match will help.
