Recapped: 06/11/2016

What happened: Nothing too important. Drago, Aerostar, and Bengala (replacing Fenix) got a trios title shot, but this was played down compared to the Apaches demanding a tag title shot and not getting it. That’s not advancing. The Trump Team cheated and beat Texano, who wants a match with them, but that’s also not advancing.

What was good: Nothing. I was disappointed by the trios match, which wasn’t much. Main event was the best match but not a recommendation.

Where can I watch it: It’s on AAA’s channel.

Previously: pretty much every single thing that happened in Orizaba over both weeks is recapped in detail.

Match 1: Faby Apache & Mary Apache vs La Hiedra & Taya
Arena Aficion, 05/31/2016
Video: luchalibreaaatv, thecubsfan

Winner: rudas (Taya fast count cradle Mary Apache)
Match Time: 10:33
Notes: There’s a tiny walkway in-between the rows – tiny enough that a fan on one side can reach over the other easily, so they’re going thru the fans to get to the ring. There’s also very little room at ringside due to the barriers. There is no announce desk, and the announcers appear to be in the PA booth. Hijo del Tirantes is referee, and gets involved in the match multiple times, including breaking up a Mary Apache pin and shoving her down into a Taya pin for a fast count three. In a post-match promo, Faby challenges Taya for a title shot but says she’s a coward, and Taya says her team is going to beat Faby’s team. Not so much. Faby challenges other cowards Averno & Chessman and gets no response.

Review: [below average] This wasn’t as severe as the recent matches, and it involved lots of Hijo del Tirantes matches, so it’s much less likeable. Hiedra seemed to be on different pages than the Apaches multiple times, and the match didn’t feel smooth. The Hijo del Tirantes stuff was dumb, and everyone blew off the result of the match as soon as it was over to talk about how Faby & Mary deserve a title shot anyway. (Never has an outcome seemed more politically motivated than this outcome, an attempt at keeping everyone happy except for the people who choose to watch this.) It was all pointless and dumb.

Match 2: Aerostar, Bengala, Drago vs Averno, Chessman, Ricky Marvin in a Number One Contenders Match match and for the AAA World Trios Championship
Arena Aficion, 05/31/2016
Video: luchalibreaaatv, thecubsfan

Winner: técnicos (Bengala inside cradle Avenro)
Match Time: 8:16
Notes: Ricky has new music, takes a selife on the way to the ring, and is called the Mexican Dragon. OK. Aerostar has no worry about setting fire off in between fans. Fenix is scheduled, but in street clothes and looking a little hobbled. Fenix explains he had a back injury, tried to wrestle last night in Irapuato, and reinjured it. The doctor says he’s got to sit out tonight, but he promises to return to the arena and says he’s got a great luchador to take his place: Bengala. Rudos jump the tecnicos, including making sure to stomp Fenix many times. Chessman even slams him into the post and Averno unmasks him. Drago’s quickly treated for a shoulder injury, the same injury he had in the match with the Xinetez. The rudos dominate, and take a group selfie while holding down Aerostar at one point. The técnicos turn it around off a missed clothesline, as often, but Averno still ends up hoping Bengala upside down for a Devil’s Wings. And holding him for a while, before the Apaches music finally plays. That’s enough to distract Averno for the loss. Faby Apache challenges for the tag titles while Fenix comes back out with the técnicos – you’d think he was on the trios title challenging team. (That title shot is treated as a minor issue.) Averno rudely rejects the challenge.

Review: [ok] this never really got going in any way; the rudos beatdown was viscous, but the match didn’t progress much from there and this was as little as you’re going to get out of the tenicos. It didn’t build them up much to make you want to see them in a trios title match, but it really wasn’t about them so no surprise. The Apache challenge is over and Averno’s doing a good job on his end, but this is the third time we’ve seen someone lose simply because people arrived at ringside and that’s just dumb.

Noti AAA

  • Lucha World Cup highlights. Zuniga’s bit seems taped in advance, because he doesn’t set them up in any specific way. It’s a short highlight package, but notable for showing Mundo winning and moment of Dario’s promo, but not Chavo cheating to set up Mundo’s win. A quick image of Mil Muertes is shown.
  • Highlights of Pagano/Psycho is shown, to set up the three way next week.

Match 3: Dr. Wagner Jr. & Texano Jr. vs El Mesías & Hernandez
Arena Aficion, 05/31/2016
Video: luchalibreaaatv, thecubsfan

Winner: rudos (Mesias foul and cradle Texano)
Match Time: 9:41
Notes: Hernandez has new, non-Konnan music. Mesias wears a Muerte Cibernetica mask, and manages to get in the ring without anyone throwing a drink at him. Dr. Wagner is wearing a Pachuca football team mask to suck up the fans.

Mesias brought the bull rope into play late. It backfired for a while, but eventually Hijo del Tirantes grabbed it while Texano was swinging it, and Mesias snuck in a foul while the referee was distracted. (It’s unclear why Tirantes had to be distracted from cheating this match.) Texano offers to take on Mesias or Hernandez or Cage for the championship, but he’d keep the championship in Mexico. Mesias insults them. Wagner also wants revenge, and compliments the Pachuca player in the crowd for winning the championship.

Review: [ok] this match never got going at a high level, but I liked it better than the other two matches. The Mesias/Texano exchanges near the end were good, and made me want to see them in a singles match. (Then I remembered I saw that two months ago! I’d still like to see it again.) Wagner & Hernandez spent time in this match, didn’t hurt it, didn’t help it, and kind of disappeared during the last stretch.
