What happened: Stuka defeated Ultimo Guerrero to earn a title match next week. The Boricuas somewhat didn’t get along, but still won without a problem. Rey Cometa beat Cavernario again.
What was good: I liked the third match, and the main event was good for the storytelling. Cometa/Cavernario was disappointing.
CMLL (TUE) 05/17/2016Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Martes de Glamour]
1) Explosivo & Vaquero Jr. b Linterna & Mr. Apolo
2) Cancerbero, Furia Roja, Raziel b El Divino, Sensei, Starman Rudos took 1/3.
3) Amapola, Dalys, Zeuxis b Estrellita, Marcela, Skadi Rudas took 1/3.
4) Ángel de Oro, Titán, Tritón b Dragón Rojo Jr., Kráneo, Ripper Triton replaced Super Porky, Dragon Rojo replaced Olimpico.
5) Rey Escorpión, Shocker, Terrible b Atlantis, La Máscara, Rush Rudos took 1/3. Rush & La Mascara did not get along. Rush attacked Mascara after the match, Rey Escorpion helped, but Terrible & Shocker made the save.
This one never quite made it up on CMLL’s site, but Guadalajara is still posting the same photos on their Facebook (which I forget about some times.)
CMLL (SUN) 05/22/2016Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Domingos Familiares]
1) Cuca b Zendra Zendra (listed as returning?) replaced Tapatio. “Quca” spells his name “Cuca” on his shirt, so that’s probably the correct spelling. Zendra was stretchered out after the finishing powerbomb.
2) El Yaqui & Fugaz b Carlo Roggi & Exterminador Tecnicos took 1/3. Exterminador’s first match this year.
3) El Gitano, Mr. Brisa, Thunder Boy DQ Explosivo, Johnny Dinamo, Star Black Johnny Dinamo replaced Capitan Cobra. DQ for fouls; feud is Star Black & Explosivo vs Mr. Brisa & Thunder Boy.
4) Kempo Dragón & Príncipe Kisho b Gallo & Vaquero Jr. The Sinaloa pair won, and won cleanly this time. They asked for a shot at the Pacific Coast tag team titles so they could take it back form Jalisco.
5) Mágico, Nautilius, Omar Brunetti b El Chakal, Furia Roja, Maléfico Chakal replaced Rafaga. Tecnicos took 1/3.
That title match is happening this Sunday. I don’t have a previous appearance by Zendra, so it must have been spelled differently prior.
NICE (SUN) 05/22/2016Arena Coliseo Monterrey [Lo Mejor de Lucha]
1) Beto Acala & Súper Jack b Etreus & Gallardo
2) Bengalí & Pedro Navajas b Ángel Justiciero &Quinto Elemento
3) Golden Boy & Rey Demonio b Dulce Kanela &Último Ninja
4) Rey Hechicero b Máscara Dorada
5) Caifan b Atlantis, Súper Parka
This may air on Noches de Coliseo next week. It’ll be the first time most people see it; attendance looks bad (and really spread out.) Monterrey being in a LigaMX semifinal probably hurt a great deal. Poor Dorada is going to everyone’s home building and taking L’s, he needs to get people to come face him in Guadalajara.
CMLL (MON) 05/23/2016Arena Puebla [CMLL, thecubsfan]
1) El Malayo & Guerrero Espacial b Arkalis & Astro 11:31. Rudos took 1/3.
2) Oro Jr. & Soberano Jr. b King Jaguar & Policeman 13:01. Tecnicos took 1/3.
3) Saurón b Astral [lightning] Sauron submitted Astral in 7:53, then asked for a title match next week. Astral accepted.
4) Fujin, Okumura, Raijin b Esfinge, Guerrero Maya Jr., Rey Cometa 14:53. Rudos took 1/3.
5) Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Niebla Roja b Dragón Lee, Titán, Valiente 8:50. Rudos took straight falls. Dragon Lee (re)injured his left knee in the first fall and was unable to finish the match. Second fall wrapped up quick.
6) Atlantis, Carístico, Negro Casas DQ Máscara Dorada, Máximo Sexy, Mephisto [Relevos Increíbles] 11:31. Team Caristico took 2/3. Team Mephisto worked as the rudos, and Mephsito fouled Caristico in the third. Post match promos set up a Dorada/Mephisto vs Casas/Caristico match next week.
Dragon Lee’s injury was an awkward landing off a normal move, but he also didn’t look to be moving great before it. There’s no update about his status. He’s listed as working Friday and Sunday in Arena Mexico. They haven’t updated card as of yet.
Dorada/Mephisto vs Casas/Caristico seems like it’ll be fun, because the trios last night was fun. Casas & Caristico have some history as a team.
Tonight’s CMLL Mexico show is headlined by Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero and Niebla Roja against Stuka, Atlantis and Angel de Oro. CMLL seemed to be setting up something with Stuka & UG last week, but no challenges were made. The CMLL preview mentions Roja is back after suffering an injury; that may be true, but he was wrestling in Arizona at one point, and wrestled in Mexico State a few weeks ago.
Rey Cometa and Barbaro Cavernario, a feud has bouncing around the weekly Arena Mexico shows, meet in a lightning match. It’s a repeat from a month ago, where Cometa beat Cavernario; Cometa’s still looking for the title match.
Other matches tonight include Pierroth, Misterioso and Sagrado being weirdly reunited after breaking up over the last few weeks. They face Triton, Valiente and Fuego. Puma & Tiger are in action, teaming with Disturbio against Esfinge, Pegasso and Stigma. Stukita makes an appearance, with Electrico & Fantasy against Nitro, Olimpico & Pierrothito. The opener is Leono, Bengala versus Cholo, Espanto, which may be a reason to tune in late.
The show will air at 7:30pm, on CMLL.com and YouTube.
Pentagon Jr. talked up the Lucha World Cup, which is only 10 days away. It didn’t click to me that it was that close until I saw it mentioned by Furia de Titanes; that’s really not far.
05/24 NJPW: Volador Jr. defeated Tiger Mask. Volador moves to 1-1, 5th place. He’s up to a 1.8% chance of winning, though I suspect a lot of winner of this competition had low odds at one point along the ways. The easy way to track the format this year is you can probably afford one loss, you likely can’t have two loses, and you’re done once you hit three.
