Taurus!!!

Recapped: 04/30/16

What happened: Cage & Mesias continue to run over anything, including an injured Texano. Argenis & Australian Suicide surprisingly won a tag title shot, with Suicide beating rival Daga. The Perros were then destroyed by the new Los Fronterizos group. Apache continues to attack Venum for reasons inadequately explained.

What was good: I liked the opener and the tag match, though both made me want longer matches (that probably aren’t happening.) I had no real use for the main event.

Where can I watch it: It’s on AAA’s channel.

Previously: Faby & Mary are friends. Perros got attacked. Psycho got the win. Mesias & Cage beat up Texano.

Cage insults the fans for a while and throws it to the Trump video. Mesias says no Mexican luchador is strong enough to stand up against them, including Texano, who’s too hurt to wrestle today. Texano walks out in a neckbrace, and with the doctor trailing after him. Texano threatens to send the rudos back to the US. Texano starts to walk to the ring, but the doctor cuts him off.

Segments showing AAA luchadors visiting children at the CRIT children’s hospital air in and out of each break. There’s also cartoon stills of tecnicos (Fenix, Rey Mysterio and La Parka) and rudos (Taurus, Pentagon Jr., and Taya). The show also includes the first promotion for the Lucha World Cup, announcing the dates.

Match 1: Atomic Boy, Dinastía, Lanzeloth, Venum vs Mamba, Mini Abismo Negro, Soul Rocker, Súper Fly
Domo de la Feria, León, Guanajuato, 04/18/2016

Winner: tecnicos (DQ for Apache run-in.)
Match Time: 9:19
Notes: Atomic Boy replaced Ludxor. An inset video is shown to remind us Ludxor was hobbling around on the Mexico City taping (trying to blame it on the dive at the end, but he was hurt prior.) Venum seemed to be about to win when Apache ran in and smacked Venum with a chair in the head. It was blatant enough to get a DQ.

Review: [good] an action packed fun match solely lacking time to give everyone get their moments in. This was really good at 9 minutes and could’ve been outstanding at 15. The finish absolutely stunk. Apache did what he could’ve done in minute one, for reasons no one understands and really no one cares about. This storyline isn’t over, has been going on for months, doesn’t have any hint of going any place, and just made the match worse. Super Fly is coming a bit too close to ending himself on his fall to the floor, and Atomic Boy had one bad slip, but this felt spectacular a more exciting than recent AAA con Lanzelot again looked super in his cameo and should be a regular, except I don’t think AAA would have any better idea of how to use him. Stuff like this would be plenty good for me, and it feels criminal we’re not getting some high spot match on every single AAA taping.

Match 2: Angélico & Jack Evans vs Daga & Joe Lider and Argenis & Australian Suicide and Hijo de Pirata Morgan & Taurus for the AAA World Tag Team One Contenders
Domo de la Feria, León, Guanajuato, 04/18/2016
Video:

Winner: Australian Suicide & Argenis (huracanrana on Daga)
Match Time: 7:42
Notes: First fall to a finish. Daga went nuts after losing, pounding Suicide and unmasking him. Jack & Argneis make the save. Daga rants in the ring. The lights go out, and Lider is somehow handcuff the top ropes by the Frontereza team (this week Nicho, Damian and Pagano.) They destroy Daga & Lider with chair shots and occasional moves, and have matching Mean Muggin’ pitbull shirts. They talk for quite a while, Pagano getting in his catchphrase last.

Review: [good] unsatisfying short, because this one felt like it was just getting going, and going much better than figured, when it was cut off. I don’t know where all the time goes on these AAA shows, but it doesn’t feel like quite enough of it is going to the actual matches. (The post match stuff wasn’t even as long as last week.) Argenis & Suicide had some genuine team work spots, including flips that would’ve looked more impressive if they landed on target, but it was enough of an effort to make them feel more than a randomly thrown together team. Taurus was his usual great self in this match; Hijo del Pirata is definitely not bad, but not sure how he can wear a shirt claiming to be the best luchador in the world when he’s teaming with the man-beast. There was even less time here than the opener and it showed, but it did mean everyone was running double speed to get it in. Wish that wasn’t required.

Match 3: Dr. Wagner Jr. & La Parka vs Brian Cage & El Mesías
Domo de la Feria, León, Guanajuato, 04/18/2016
Video:
luchalibreaaatvthecubsfan

Winner: Cage & Mesias
Match Time: 7:52
Notes: Dr. Wagner insults Mesias and Cage (who is very confused) before the match, and wants to have an alliance with Parka tonight if the fans cheer. They do. Parka points out Wagner’s been a jerk to Psycho Clown and other friends, but goes along with it if the fans cheer. They do, and Parka says it’s a deal for tonight only. And then they’re attacked. During the beatdown, Maricela again throws a drink at Mesias, who cannot fight back. The técnicos are beat down for most of the match, make a comeback the last minute or so, and get fouled. Cage fouls Parka, Mesias does the same to Wagner. Tirantes is not overtly evil this week, so he was distracted from the fouls and thinks it over before counting. Cage & Mesias unmask Wagner and beat up Parka until Texano runs them off. Wagner walks off, Texano turns to yell at him, and Cage & Mesias attack Texano from behind too.

Review: [ok] boring brawling main event that didn’t hold my interest after the big moves which followed it. Lots of punches and forearms, with the rudos taking most of the match but not being able to do most of what they could do with these técnicos. The técnicos had small comebacks that didn’t stick, seemingly less than usual, and it probably didn’t make much a different. Parka & Wagner lost, but not clean, and the difference from usual is they didn’t get a visual pinfall before it. The beatdown here felt similar to the one right before it.

  1. Does Lucha Underground know Taurus exists? Makes me sad to think they will probably never use him
