Recapped: 05/16-17/2016
What happened: Rey Escorpión seemed to cause problems between La Mascara & Rush, but was dumped to the side at the end. The first two matches had botched finishes due to referees counting unplanned eliminations, and the third had a pointless DQ.
What was good: The semimain was the best match, with some of the undercard derailed by the bad finishes (and the main event hurt by feed issues.)

Match 1: Hombre Bala Jr. & Súper Halcón Jr. vs Espanto Jr. & Hijo del Signo

Notes: Referee Pompin signaled a third fall submission by Signo; it was unclear if Signo had actually submitted. Signo definitely was unaware, and come back in to break up a submission, which caused Pompin to end the match by DQ. Miguel Linares might have been the only other person in the building to understand what was going on.
Review: [ok] Hombre Bala & Super Halcón were going full speed early and looking great, and then it slowed down and got boring with Signo & Espanto in charge as it often does. (To be fair, the técnicos aren’t great at drawing sympathy from the crowd, and it would’ve helped if people cared.) There’s no way Bala’s hold was intended to finish Signo and Pompin, who’s seen more matches in his life than I ever will, knew that as well so it’s mystifying why he called a submission there.
Match 2: Blue Panther Jr., Pegasso, The Panther vs Fujin, Raijin, Skándalo

Notes: This time, referee Bestia Negra counted the Japanese duo down when they had kicked out before three (though just before.) It was also clearly not supposed to be the end of the fall, but the referee was looking down at the mat and not at the pinfall.
Review: [ok] Blue Panther Jr. & Raijin get into an out of control brawl out of nowhere which requires their teammates to separate them, and all I can think is I’ve never seen that before and we need Blue Panther Sr. to layout everyone’s matches. (Or at least someone to notice how much better those are than the ones they’re doing and try to copy it.) It’s tough to recommend a match when even the winners are protesting the decision, but the Panthers and Japanese kids are really good against each other until the time the match ends, and Pegasso’s fine. Skandalo is a bit of a drag. The only thing slower than my speed it getting recaps up is Skandalo trying to run across the ring. At least these guys will have a dozen other matches to try this again.

Notes: The DQ in the first fall was as intended, though strange after the last two matches.
Review: [ok] it’s pretty easy to mentally check out on Super Porky matches. I could probably get away with not even watch this one and writing this bit anyway: Porky looked bad, but crowd loved him and was as loud as they’ve been all night. The problem for me is this match had a couple people I like, and they were doing well. The rudos were well organized, which was good since they took most of the match, and the other técnicos few spots near the end got over big. This doesn’t do much for me weeks after it aired but it was successful on the night. That’s more than you could say about the previous two.
The mistimed Kato Kung Lee tribute took place here.
Match 4: Titán vs Rey Bucanero in a lightning match

Review: [ok] A Titan showcase, so Bucanero unsurprisingly won at the end. Not much of a story, except for Bucanero getting very tired five minutes in. They started fast and Titan had a lot of offense needing Bucanero to move around, which didn’t work to Bucanero’s favor, but he was where he needed to be. They talked about his FULL title win during this match, and I’m thinking that much must have been much differently paced for him to make it thru. Unsure why he needs one head drop move when he uses both the Buca Storm head drop and the Canadian Destroyer head drop, but so it goes with CMLL veterans right now.
Match 5: Rey Cometa, Valiente, Volador Jr. vs Cavernario, Felino, Negro Casas

Review: [good] a really fun trios match, with the match lasting a lot longer than expecting and the six going a pretyt far in the match. The técnicos worked well together, and felt more than a throw down técnico side. Peste Negra deserve some credit for that. Volador looked really good thru the match, and really shines in trios matches. The Cavernario/Rey Cometa feud seemed dropped; they came across each other in the match, but there was no real feud (and that was one thing the match was missing.)

Notes: Rey Escorpión is wearing a Los Ingobernables. He steals the microphone from La Mascara, unhappy he’s not being introduced. Mascara makes sure to insult Escorpión at the end. Escorpión then spent the match sucking up to Rush at La Mascara’s expense. Escorpión and Mascara turn on each other in the third fall, and are quickly beat. Rush & Mascara shove Escorpión down after the match.
Kato Kung Lee was announced as being still alive in between the first and second falls. The feed fell apart during portions of this match, making it hard to follow.
Review: [ok] pretty close to unwatchable on the feed, but you got to see enough of it to know it’s not necessary to track this down on Claro’s website or Azteca when it airs in a few week. The Escorpión/Mascara issue gives it a different feel than the many other similar matches, but the action itself doesn’t really come together in an interesting way. Escorpión remains the best guy have at telling this sort of story.
