Los Perros del Mal destroyed both teams after the match. Said to be a dark match.

Hamburguesa splash for the win. Faby asked Taya for a title match. Taya said no since Faby had not beat her directly.
3) Drago, Fénix, Octagón Jr. b Averno, Chessman, Ricky Marvin
Octagon Jr. was announced as the surprise luchador a few days prior and got a better reaction on this show. Fenix beat Marvin with a huracanrana. Ricky Marvin told the press this was the start of a new chapter in his career. Los Perros del Mal interrupted post match (and may have distracted earlier) to tell Averno & Chessman that Lider & Daga were winning the tag titles at Rey de Reyes.
4) Garza Jr., Jack Evans, La Parka b Pentagón Jr., Taurus, Villano IV
Garza beat Taurus. (Said to be Taurus’ first defeat, but he lost in Rey de Reyes as well.) Pentagon said he’d beat Demon, Parka and Villano at Rey de Reyes, then go after Jack Evans next.
5) Dr. Wagner Jr., El Mesías, Texano Jr. b Monsther Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown
Mesias and Texano didn’t get along but it didn’t cost the match. Wagner beat Psycho Clown with a Michinoku Driver, then challenged Psycho Clown for a title match and a mask match. Psycho tried to respond but Wagner took his mask.

Air Date: 03/26. Match one may not air – though since the Perros turned up at the end, maybe they’ll edit it into being the open or something. It could also just be on YouTube.

Appeared to be a sellout, which would be the second in this arena in five days. The Elite card will likely make it three in two weeks. IWRG cards will generally do a couple hundred people. The building isn’t dead, it’s about getting giving people what they want to see.

Though this is a lame duck position, they did do some work to build up the lesser matches on Rey de Reyes. The mixed trios match now has a purpose, Faby’s got to beat Taya to get a title match. There’s at least a little bit of effort into the tag title match. Even the Pentagon/Jack thing, a dropped angle from the fall being picked up, points at a post-Rey de Reyes plan.

Back prior Guerra de Titanes, I argued Psycho & Wagner would win the title shot match because they’d be the best choice to main event Rey de Reyes. They did not win, but it still feels like they’re going to be main eventing Rey de Reyes. They’re definitely the biggest match; whatever they’re doing with Mesias & Texano is not not coming across strongly in results. That title match is only going to get a reaction if it’s a hot crowd or they do some great work in the match itself.

Drago, Fenix, Octagon vs Averno, Chessman, Ricky Marvin sounds like the best match on the show. The comments Mas Lucha got from Ricky made it soudn as if Bengala is a beast of the past.

Garza Jr. told Furia de Titanes that any talk of him going to WWE is simply rumors. I wonder if “rumors” has a different connotation in Spanish than in English. Rumors in English can mean true or false, but every luchador says “rumors” like it’s obviously false. (That’s what Sombra said in the identical situation.) This seems like the English version, but it also seems like the only thing Garza can really say in the situation – neither WWE or AAA would be happy with him saying more. It does seem like AAA can’t be too concerned about him leaving if they’re starting to give him actual wins.

Next taping is 03/23 in San Luis Potosi for Rey de Reyes, which will be their first taping in that venue since Alberto left. This week’s TV show announced a 04/08 return to Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera, which would be the following show. Outside of Rey de Reyes, they’re not venturing too far away from the Mexico City base so far this year. That’s not too abnormal, but shows directly in Mexico City is a bit unusual.

AAA also announced tickets on sale for a 05/14 TV taping in Orizaba. There’s likely two to be announced in between.

There weren’t any stand out matches but it worked as a build up to next week’s big matches. They set up two plot points – Volador being overwhelmed by the Casas family and Maximo’s kiss being deadly – which seem like they’ll play into next week’s title match.

Dalys winning her first title the week before Negro Casas has a hair match is interesting timing.

The broadcast barely mentioned the iPPV, if they did at all. There is a promo for it on their YouTube channel.

Seemed like an average or below average turnout.

Tonight’s Arena Coliseo show has Ultimo Guerrero defending his title against Atlantis. This another thing CMLL’s barely promoted! Atlantis has his own title so it’s unlikely he’s going to win this one. It’s the first of three straight show in Arena Coliseo – there’s no matches in Arena Mexico until Friday due to work being done.

There’s also a Cara Lucha show tonight, with Ciclope vs Joe Lider vs Danger vs Wotan in the main event, and Daga vs Rayo Star in the semimain.

Tonight’s also RIOT’s third show, with Caifan vs Dralion vs Arez on top.

The Guadalajara Homenaje a Dos Leyendas will now take place on 04/05, according to Super Libre

Recapped: 03/11/2016

What happened: Dalys defeated Marcela to become the CMLL Women’s World Champion. She’s the 18^th champion.

The underdogs for next week’s hair match won both their matches. Negro Casas defeated Volador after a foul and some interference from Tiger & Puma again. Máximo defeated Rush cleanly after kissing him.

Also, the theatrical play La Dama del Negro was honored before the main event for 22 consecutive years off performances. This included La Dama del Negro making a cameo earlier in the night, and various CMLL ‘terror’ characters being the part of a presentation of a giant plaque. One of the actors praised lucha libre (or at least the luchadors he could remember from the old song), but there was no obvious connection to CMLL explaining why they were giving such a big presentation. Someone in charge must be a big fan.

Homenaje a Dos Leyendas was mentioned thru the show, but the fact that it was on iPPV was barely mentioned if at all to the audience most likely to purchase it.

What was good: The women’s match was fine, but didn’t seem at the level of other big women’s title matches. (I liked Silueta/Zeuxis more, without a question.) The minis opener was a lot of fun. The later matches were more angles than matches, the angles were pretty good.

Where can I watch it: The main event is on ClaroSports.com. The show will air on Claro Sports TV in a week or so, and on Azteca on 04/02.

CMLL & AAA preview, LU to sell tickets for wrestling show

Both AAA and CMLL have TV tapings tonight. By coincidence, both are a bit of lame duck shows, leading into major shows where the card is all set.

CMLL is one week away from Homenaje a Dos Leyendas. Tonight’s top two matches are trios matches leading into the two apuesta matches next week. Rush and Maximo are in the last match, with Marco, Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Escorpion and La Mascara, in a rematch from last week. Maximo won in straight falls that time, the last when Rush went crazy and got himself DQed. Volador and Negro Casas meet in the semifinal. Super Parka returns again to team with his son (and Mascara Dorada) against Negro Casas, Barbaro Cavernario and Kamaitachi. It’s one skeleton man away from being a really good match, though the emphasis will probably be on Casas harassing the Volador family.

CMLL did time one feud to end before their major show. Dalys has been beating Marcela in matches for the last few weeks, and gets her title match tonight. Dalys has been better against Marcela (and in CMLL) than elsewhere, so it could turn out to be a good match. A title match seems unlikely, but not impossible – every time Marcela loses her title, it’s been to a foreigner (Hiroka, Ayumi, Syuri), so perhaps Dalys will win it for Panama.

The rest of the card includes a Super Porky trios match, the Panthers & Fuego taking on Los Cancerberos, and a minis match with Stukita, Astral, Mercurio and Nitro.

Show starts at 8:30pm CT and will air on ClaroSports.com. (Daylight Savings Time does not start until this weekend.)

AAA’s taping is just outside of Mexico City in Arena Naucalpan. AAA tapings in IWRG’s home building are always sell outs and loud crowds. This taping is a little bit hampered by it’s place on the schedule – it won’t air on Rey de Reyes and it seems only to be on the schedule to make up for Tampico being canceled – but the show should be interesting to watch even with no great consequences.

The problem is the card itself isn’t laid out to have no great matches either. The main event is The Psycho Circus versus Dr. Wagner, Texano and Mesias, where it’ll be a surprise if Texano & Mesias don’t attack each other leading into their Rey de Reyes match. Perhaps it’ll be clear by the end of the night if Mesias is meant to be a tecnico now, but it feels late in the program to finally make it clear. The semimain is also a Rey de Reyes preview, with finalists La Parka, Pentagon Jr. and Villano IV in a trios (with Garza, Taurus and Jack Evans to round it out.) Pentagon’s going to be the crowd favorite in Naucalpan, but I’d almost be worried if he won on this show, because it’d seem to make him less likely to win the actual tournament.

The rest of the matches don’t appear to be connected to Rey de Reyes. Octagon Jr. teams up with Fenix and Drago to take on Averno, Chessman and inexplicably unmasked Ricky Marvin in what should be the best match of the show; I expect a lot of Flamita chants in this one. The second match is the usual mixed trios match, and the opener is a random group of individuals for a match which might only turn up on AAA’s YouTube channel.

The show is listed as starting at 8:45 pm CT (so figure more around 9:10.) There is no official live stream, but Periscopes of AAA shows have been popping up lately and it might be the same tonight. The show will air on AAA TV on March 26th.

There will be a small amount of $10 general admission tickets for next Tuesday’s Lucha Underground show at SXSW in Austin. LU is going to sell tickets to a show for the first time.

lucha TV preview for weekend of March 12th

It’s spring daylight savings time this Sunday in the US, which messes up everything for a month. Mexico does not switch over until April 3rd, so there’s a four week span where Central Time in the US and Central Time in Mexico City means two different things. Here’s the simplest explanation: starting with Monday’s Puebla show, all of the CMLL streams are starting one hour later if you’re in the US. This also includes Rey de Reyes, should it air on iPPV. AYM and Multimedios are also affected, but both channels do strange things as it is. 52MX’s airing change, but they’re usually pretty good about keeping their schedule correct. Channels which air in the US are unaffected (unless you live some place that doesn’t change times, in which you’re on your own.)

I’m going to have to repeat this about 500 times in the next two weeks, but these are the two important days affected

03/18 Homenaje a Dos Leyendas: starts 10:30 pm eastern daylight time, 7:30 pm pacific daylight time
03/23: Lucha Underground airs at 8pm EDT, AAA Rey de Reyes starts around 11pm EDT (shows do not overlap)

keep those things in mind if you’re ordering those iPPVs – those are going to be late night shows

This week, Lucha Azteca has the Mephisto/Mascara Dorada match, worth seeking out of if you haven’t seen it. AAA will be airing the first half of the Toluca show, likely including the four way that was posted this week. CMLL’s Tuesday show will be a rare show from Arena Coliseo, the place where all the streams shows were being aired for a couple years.

That sure sounds like they’re doing Cavernario/Dragon Lee some point soon, though it’s a straight trios rematch main event next week. Hope it turns up if it happens.

CMLL’s 03/18 Homenaje a Dos Leyendas will be a $10USD iPPV on Cleeng. CMLL hasn’t announced it (why would they promote something like that on Informa?) but it’s up on the cleeng site today. The last show worked out well. The show before it did not, but they ended up posting the show for free. The shows have been live only viewing in the past and I’d assume the same until they say anything else.

AAA also hinted they’d have information about Rey de Reyes being on iPPV soon. I was doubtful it’d be available at all, so this is a nice surprise. Again, that’s the same night as Lucha Underground Azteca Warfare, so it’s going to be a busy night.

This week’s WON says Lucha Underground is close to a deal with Netflix, where season 1 would go up on the service. (Netflix posts complete seasons, so season 2 wouldn’t be up until sometime after it finishes on El Rey.)

It also notes a WWE is looking for another round of international signings, including a AAA/LU top star “who hasn’t been in a major US promotion” who’s also unhappy with LU creative. Meltzer does not give any more details, but the top people in LU who are also in AAA are Mil Muertes (who has been in TNA so he’s DQed), Fenix, Pentagon, and King Cuerno/Hijo del Fantasma. You can throw in Texano Jr. if they mean top in AAA (and you can increase the group even larger depending on how elastic your definition of ‘top’ is.) It may be a complete coincidence, but Hijo del Fantasma posted a dramatic statement on Twitter yesterday. He’s made sense as a WWE pickup for a long time, only missing the WWE’s own initiative to bring in more Mexicans. Not sure if there’s anything to this though: everyone in Lucha Underground is believed to be under contract and couldn’t leave unless they were out of their contract – being unhappy and wanting out and being able to get out are two different things.

Octagon held a press conference to announce his own clothing line. That’s a real sentence. It’s mostly shirts and caps with the Octagon image, which is an interesting thing given the ongoing battle over the rights to that character. Octagon said you could buy the shirts at RemediosMagicos.com; in usual Mexican wrestling merchandise fashion, there’s not yet any Octagon merchandise there yet. Former AAA luchadors (Cibernetico, Estrellita, the other Octagoncito among them) and celebrities were in attendance.

Of course, what people really wanted Octagon to talk about was Octagon Junior. Octagon believes he owns the right to his name – his claim is he came up with it and give to Antonio Pena, not the other way around – and now even AAA believes it, so they’ve created an Octagon Jr. to be able to keep using the character when they lose the lawsuit. (Octagon’s theory is AAA would’ve just called him “Octagon” if they felt they owned the name.) Octagon doesn’t feel this is legal either and will file a lawsuit about it. Octagon also claimed he had been planning on revealing his own Octagon Jr. previously, and there will be news to come out about it in a few weeks.

It’s hard to believe any of this will go anywhere; outside of the Axel/Hijo del Santo suit, it doesn’t seem like any lucha libre cases has come to a legal resolution in a long time.

Zeuxis posted photos of getting ready for her trip to the US, , which means I’m probably going to debate buying a #PuertoRicianPower shirt in the next couple weeks. I can do that, because I know the Chicago area show is in Berwyn, but it may be tricker for other people – the rest of the tour has dates, but the venues/time are still a mystery to me. Jocay has been trying to find out the details of the New York/Connecticut and been told nothing is set. There has been similar tours in the recent past, and there’s usually posters on the internet for all the shows. Maybe they’re just advertising shows hyper-locally, though you’d think they’d get the word out as loudly as possible when you’re bringing in people from Mexico.

Box y Lucha mentions Monterrey luchador Pedro Navajas was unconscious for 45 minutes after a dive gone wrong in Arena el Jaguar over the weekend. It sounds like he recovered, but a scary situation.
