CMLL Puebla: 2016-03-28

Dorada wins, barely
Dorada wins, barely

Recapped: 03/28/2016

What happened: Mascara Dorada defeated Bárbaro Cavernario in a match which combined both men’s wiliness to try crazy things. Rey Escorpion both fouled and unmasked Mistico in the main event.

What was good: The title match, definitely. The main event was pretty good and the fourth match was not bad. Avoid the first half of the show.

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s YouTube channel and will air on 52MX in about 12 days. The entrances for the Dorada/Cavernario match begin at 1h36m13s, and the match starts at 1h39m00s.

Match 1: Flyer & Zaeta Roja vs Rey Apocalipsis & Toro Bill Jr.
Arena Puebla, 03/28/2016

  1. técnicos
    • Flyer head hook armbar Rey Apocalipsis (5:10)
    • Zaeta Roja grounded octopus Toro Bill (5:30)
  2. Batillon
    • Toro Bill half crab Flyer (2:18)
    • Toro Bill front cracker Zaeta Roja (3:01)
  3. técnicos
    • Flyer corner dropkick Toro Bill (2:03)
    • Zaeta Roja overhead belly to belly suplex Rey Apocalipsis (2:12)

Winner: técnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 10:43

Review: [below average] short match where the rudos were more interested in doing their character bits than being on the same page with the técnicos. The match derailed a few times because of it (and the referee ushering them out of the ring to stop their double teams didn’t help.) Flyer didn’t impress and had his own stumbles, and Zaeta Roja probably shouldn’t be the best guy in a match.

Match 2: Arkalis & Rey Samuray vs Cancerbero & Raziel
Arena Puebla, 03/28/2016

  1. Cancerberos

    • Raziel figure four pin Rey Samurai (6:2)
  2. técnicos

  3. Cancerberos
    • Raziel suplex/Cancerbero silla Rey Samurai (3:59)
    • Cancerbero pin Arkalis (4:38)

Winner: Cancerbero (2-1)
Match Time: 15:16

Review: [ok] this was better in the last match, in that the técnicos high spots went much better. Still, the teams didn’t work together so well and the Cancerberos were exceedingly rough. Arkalis seemed hurt by Raziel surprising him with a dropkick, and the timing of spots were messed up thru the match. This didn’t seem professional.

Match 3: Estrellita, Marcela, Princesa Sugehit vs La Comandante, Reyna Isis, Tiffany
Arena Puebla, 03/28/2016

  1. tecnicas

  2. rudas
    • La Comandante inverted campana Princesa Sugehit (4:52)

    • Estrellita step over tirabuzon La Comandante (3:56)
    • Marcela double stomp Reyna Isis (4:29)

Winner: tecnicas (2-1)
Match Time: 15:26

Review: [ok] mostly boring women’s match with no real errors, which put it ahead of the previous matches. Comandante was scared, but not too scared to do her axhandle with the ropes shaking this time. Estrellita’s submission to win was less than convincing, but Marcela’s double stomp was a bit too convincing. I could’ve used less of that match.

Match 4: Stigma, Titán, Tritón vs Bobby Z, Kamaitachi, Skándalo

    • Titan second rope corner moonsault Skándalo (8:03)
    • Bobby Zavala low blow dropkick Triton (8:26)

Winner: rudos (2-1)
Match Time: 18:41

Review: [good] much better than the matches which preceded them. Still more Stigma & Skándalo than I’d like, but Stigma didn’t mess up anything huge and Skándalo would tag out at times. Kamaitachi was lots of fun even if he needed more time in this match, and Titan & Triton were on. There was nothing super notable about this match but it was fun and sometimes interesting, which is more than you can say for the first half of this card.

Notes: Seconds were Kamaitachi & Triton.

Review: [excellent] superb match, out-delivering the hopes we had for this match in this situation. They put in a plenty of twists and turns despite the real outcome never being doubt, and managed to pull people into the near finished – especially the cavernaria sequence. They put a lot of big moves in this and all of them came off well, there were just a few slight issues with the order of things (like the SSP) that had to be fixed, but even those got handled well. They did a lot of their usual stuff and expanded a bit beyond there. It really got insane with both guys trying splashes to the floor, and then they just kept on going for more minutes. (They probably could’ve ended before the splashes and people would’ve gone home happy.) Finish looked really tight, and the Puebla crowd tonight was as into Dorada as any fanbase has been since he’s been back from NJPW.

Match 6: Mistico, Valiente, Volador Jr. vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora, Rey Escorpión

Arena Puebla, 03/28/2016

  1. Sky Team
    • Mistica on Rey Escorpión (1:04)
  2. Revolucionarios
    • Dragon Rojo Jr. dropkick Volador (0:31)
    • Dragon Rojo Jr. corner dropkick Valiente (0:50)
  3. Sky Team
    • DQ Rey Escorpión [foul, unmask Mistico] (4:14)

Winner
: Sky Team (2-1)
Match Time: 6:08

Review: [good] compressed main event – it’s always the main event which gets cut down in time, which has the advantage to putting the big matches in the semimain – but they tried to do twice as much in half as much time. Revolucionarios versus versions of this top tecnico team have been a pretty solid match up, and Rey Escorpion being back to catch every crazy Mistico move was really good news. He a lot of craziness to catch. The finish suggests this might be match one of a longer program, which would be good news for all.
