El Año de Parka Negra

Recapped: 03/02/2016
taped in Auditorio General José María Arteaga, Querétaro, Querétaro, 02/19/2016 – part 1 of 2.

What happened: Pentagon Jr. retained the Mixed Tag Championship in a handicap match over Daga & Taya, after Australian Suicide & attacked Daga. Pentagon gave up the title after the match and the Perros seemed to be all friends again. Villano IV advanced in the Rey de Reyes for whatever reason.

What was good: Nothing. Opener was lesser than most recent trios. Main event was not fun. Rey de Reyes match was not worth watching.

Where can I watch it: It’s on AAA’s channel.

Previously: Daga threw a chair at Suicide really close.

All references to Rey de Reyes in Tampico are dropped in the graphics, with Rey de Reyes just bring promoted generically. The SLP taping is just listed as a normal taping, and the Naucalpan taping is added. Pentagon is mixed tag champion, but lost to Averno & Chessman thanks to a Joe Lider mistake. Fenix’s team wants a trios title shot, got beat up. They show more of the beatdown in this bit than the match last week.

Los Perros del Mal – Daga, Taya, Joe Lider, Pentagon and Kahn-El-Mal come to the ring to start the match. Taya is earing her title, and Pentagon is wearing the blue mixed tag title and a matching mask. Pentagon says everyone knows there’s scheduled to be a match between the Perros and it’s going to happen. Daga & Taya have a problem named Pentagon Junior. Pentagon doesn’t know what’s going on in Sexy Star’s head, but he’s more than capable of taking on both by himself. (Sexy Star is mentioned by name.) Pentagon gets Kahn’s approval on this match, who approves so it’s on. Pentagon again says Sexy’s lost her head, but Joe Lider steals the microphone away and says Pentagon is the one who’s lost his head. Pentagon takes it back and patronizes Lider, which leads to a pull apart. Pentagon hits the catchphrase to end the segment, with Kahn el Mal keeping him away from the other three (who are holding back Lider.)

Match 1: Argenis, Australian Suicide, Súper Nova vs Joe Lider, Parka Negra, Súper Fly

Winner: rudos (Lider Storm on Super Nova)
Match Time: 11:54
Notes: Match obviously joined in progress, despite an attempt to hide it.

Review: [ok] just didn’t click; felt like a long series of singles face off without much intermixing as a team. They’ve had matches with near the same lineup, but Nova & Argenis aren’t as exciting as others and throwing the finishing sequence around Lider & Nova is not a satisfying bit. Sequence near the end was not so great. Parka Negra misses his catch on Argenis, and cameras miss Suicide’s dive to the floor. On the plus side, Joe Lider’s current hair is annoying and fits the character.

Match 2: Villano IV vs ElectroshockChessmanJack Evans [AAA Rey de Reyes] and in a tournament semifinal match
Auditorio General José María Arteaga, Querétaro, Querétaro, 02/19/2016

  • Chessman jackhammer Jack Evans (8:30)
  • Electroshock Rey de Reyes Chessman (9:19)
  • Villano IV step over suastica Electroshock (12:13)

Winner: Villano IV
Match Time: 12:13
Notes: Mesias joins the announcers, though a video screw up shows part of the main event instead of his entrance. Maybe they were covering up something, but it was a bizarre thing to do it. Mesias doesn’t have much to say.

Review: [ok] They did some stuff and then the match ended. There was no real story except everyone getting a run of offense and then eliminations. The run of offense wasn’t so great. Crowd didn’t get into it much. Electroshock had a run of armdrags which seemed designed to see how quickly he could tire out Villano V. (That wasn’t the plan, but they didn’t have a good one.) Electroshock does a lot of moves which do not get much reaction – the big cutter countering a top rope Chessman dive didn’t do much. Announcers went on about Electroshock using a variation of the suastica, missing that it was the same hold Electroshock used to win this tournament years ago.

Noti AAA

– next week, watch Apache versus the Cadetes

– Pentagon interview part 2: it’s all Joe Lider’s fault

– Suicide says he has six stiches thanks to Daga, but he gave Daga two stitches with that punch to the eye. Suicide is sick of trios and games, he wants Daga one on one.

Winner: Pentagon (PentaDriver pumphandle powerbomb)
Match Time: 9:53
Notes: Mesias is still at the announce desk, but apparently off mic. Lider seconds Daga & Taya, while Kahn seconds Pentagon. The Perros del Mal music plays throughout. Announcers tried their best to avoid mentioning Sexy Star, with limited success. Australian Suicide rans in at about 8 minutes to hit Daga with a chair, which is somehow not a DQ. Lider slaps Suicide and suplexes him on the apron. The chair shot is still enough to disable Daga for a minute, and Pentagon beats Taya on his own without a lot of trouble. The rudos destroy Suicide after the match, who apparently has no friends. Post match Pentagon praises his stablemates individually, apparently healing the problems in the group and declares he’s now giving up the mixed tag title because he has no partner. The rest of the group was OK with this.

Review: [below average] a tedious slog of a match with no flow and no build. They decided to have Daga and Taya in all match, which meant long beatdowns with occasional comebacks, only the crowd didn’t really care about the comebacks at all and the beatdowns were really boring and went on way too long. This match had little to it and could’ve done the same in half as long. No one bothering to win the match until after the run-in was very glaring.

I think AAA assumed the crowd would just automatically cheer Pentagon, but it didn’t happen at all, they just weren’t that interested in who won or lost. Maybe this would’ve worked better with Daga & Taya playing more overtly heel, but they didn’t come off strongly – and really the whole segment seemed confused if the Perros were meant to be rudos or not. They were definitely presented as técnicos at the start of the show and, other than messing with friendless Suicide, were a nice happy family who got back together in the end. Suicide totally got killed in this for the sake of giving an excuse for a finish of a match they didn’t have to do. I guess the idea is they promised the match so they had to deliver it (and that’s why Pentagon gives up the belt only after the match), but they weren’t really delivering it once Sexy Star walked out. They could’ve changed the match and made it workable, but they just were stubborn to make whatever point and had this instead.
