Dorada tries to break thru Mephisto
Dorada tries to break thru Mephisto

Recapped: 02/19/2016

What happened: Los Ingobernables kicked Marco Corleone to the curb after sided with Máximo over Mascara and Rush. Marco & Máximo are reunited as a unit and challenged their former friends to a double apuesta match. Volador has the same challenge to Negro Casas, and might be getting closer to it actually happening. Mascara Dorada kept the CMLL Welterweight Championship, but the crowd did not embrace him.

What was good: Both the fourth match (Casas trios) and the fifth match (title match) are strongly recommended. The angle in the main is worth seeing. Skip the undercard.

Where can I watch it: It’ll be up on my YouTube channel. The main event is up on ClaroSports’ site.

Match 1: Oro Jr. & Star Jr. vs Arkángel de la Muerte & Metálico

    • Metálico Dragon Bomb Star Jr. (9:14)

Winner: rudos
Match Time: 22:43

Review: [ok] This was actually better that I expected to be on one hand, with Metálico working very hard to and looking good thru the match, and Oro and Star looking acrobatic even with the dive restrictions. (It turns out they’re very good at flipping over people.) On the other hand, this was insanely, ten minutes more than it really needed to be, and felt it. It came off as someone was running late and they had to empty the bag to do all they could to stretch this out, but it also meant this was a much different opening match than the usual bit of everyone going down on the first semi-plausible finishing maneuver. It was different, on a show with a lot different matches. Besides Metálico, Star Jr. came off very strong and seems to be a guy overdue for a higher position.

Match 2: Marcela, Princesa Sugehit, Skadi vs Dalys, Reyna Isis, Tiffany

    • Dalys slow spinning powerbomb Marcela (4:27)

Winner: rudas (2-1)
Match Time: 15:33

Review: [below average] This one needed more energy to follow the last match, and we got a usually dragging women’s match instead. The ones who aren’t much good weren’t much good, though there was no disaster. This was just really boring. Thunder using a cradle suplex as a finish, and now Skadi is using a northern lights’s suplex, so do they just teach the bad wrestlers bridging cradles as finishes? It’s a weird choice.

Match 3: Ángel de Oro, Esfinge, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Olímpico, Virus

  3. tecnicos
    • Dragon Rojo Dragon Bomb Guerrero Maya Jr. (3:02)
    • Esfinge springboard splash Dragon Rojo (4:12)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 14:32

Review: [ok] Maya’s leap into the crowd was cool, and Virus’ heroic effort to throw himself in the way of Angel de Oro’s match ending moonsault dive was nice, but this was kind of nothing the rest of the way. Olímpico is a known problem, but Dragon Rojo seems to be getting bigger or more injured again. He was moving terribly early and looking heavy. The double stomp on Angel de Oro did not look like a good idea and didn’t seem to feel like one either. Couldn’t believe Guerrero Maya Jr. got eliminated first out of all these people, but this was the third straight match where they did a little bit off from the formula.

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 8:50
Notes: Volador again challenged Negro Casas to a hair match after the result.

Review: [great] just a completely insane match, a sprint from the prematch attack to the finish. The match time isn’t much, but they packed so much into that time and the pace was incredible. Even despite the short falls, this match was a good argument for three of them: we probably wouldn’t get that first fall finish if this was one fall, and the timing on it was amazing. A lot of great timing to set up great looking spots, so much that I felt like I lost track of stuff by the end. The foul even worked as a climax of the match, Negro being a jerk to end all the fun. This is a match you have to go out of you way to see.

Match 5: Máscara Dorada © vs Mephisto for the CMLL World Welterweight Championship
Arena México, 02/19/2016

  1. Mephisto reverse campana (2:47)
  2. Mascara Dorada leg trap cobra clutch (1:18)
  3. Mascara Dorada Dorada Screwdriver (13:14)

Winner: Mascara Dorada (2-1)
Match Time: 17:19
Notes: Esfinge and Arkangel are seconds.

Review: [great] the Mascara Dorada goes nuts match we were kind of expecting to see, except maybe not with the reaction you’d expect for it. Dorada’s only real stumble on the show was a poor promo to promote the match, but the crowd was not into Dorada no matter how much he killed himself in this match. That’s a shame, because Dorada was throwing himself all over the place with incredible dive after dive. His headscissors spots, the one taking Mephisto off the apron and the one using the barricade, seemed even better. And they specifically had Dorada win one fall with a submissio and another with his screwdriver to ‘prove’ he could do more than fly. And it still didn’t connect with the crowd, tragically. It felt good to me. Mephisto’s role was occasional finishing type move and catching dives, which he almost pulled of perfectly. (He was too close to the stage on the dive from there and Dorada took his worst landing on the ramp.) Mephisto essentially having the same title match he always does hampers this a bit, but Dorada’s brillance obscured all of that quite a bit. Worth seeking out to be confused.

Match 6: La Máscara, Marco Corleone, Rush vs Atlantis, Máximo Sexy, Valiente
Arena México, 02/19/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Atlantis & Valiente pin Rush & Mascara (3:59)
  2. tecnicos
    • DQ rudos [excessive violence?] (4:42)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 8:41
Notes: Máximo wore a Bufete del Amor shirt where Rush’s face had been cross out. Marco had friendly fire problems in the first fall, including an Air Corleone which was aimed for Máximo but hit Rush & Mascara instead for the pin. Marco also did not want to join in on the beatings on Máximo. The Ingobernables got it together for a while in the second fall, but things fell apart near the end. Marco pulled Rush and Mascara off Máximo repeatedly until Rush got annoyed and fouled him. Rush dropkicked Tirantes for good measure.

Rush grabbed the microphone and kicked Marco out of the Ingobernables. Marco insulted Mascara & Rush and said he wanted to be part of the Bufete del Amor instead anyway. Máximo challenged Mascara & Rush to a hair/hair vs mask/hair match. Los Ingobernables beat them up, and beat up Valiente and Atlantis when they tried to break it up.

Review: [good] really, just an angle with the excuse for a match, but a pretty big angle. It’d be an interesting split to happen at any time, but also more interesting with Dos Leyendas a month away (and Ultimo Guerrero and Thunder suddenly out of the picture.) Marco has said he prefers being a pure tecnico and it looks like he’s getting his wish, with a fun tag match set up – even if they don’t get to the apuesta matches, it’s a good set up. Crowd loves Máximo and hates Rush, and this will be an easy heated feud for however long it lasts. It also probably means the Ingobernables are going to be booked more often as normal rudos going forward, since there aren’t many tecnicos left to team with them.
