Recapped: 02/05/2016

What happened:  Volador cheated to defeat Negro Casas after Casas had done the same. Volador still wants that hair match, but Casas refuses to even discuss it.

Mascara Dorada made his first appearance in Arena Mexico in a year.

Kamaitachi also returned, losing again to Dragon Lee in the semimain. No title match was teased.

What was good: Most of the card. The first couple matches didn’t quite make the cut for me, but weren’t that far off and everything else was enjoyable. There’s no MOTYC on this show but it was one of the better Arena Mexico shows from top to bottom in a while.

Where can I watch it: It’ll be up on my YouTube channel on Tuesday and the main event is up on Claro’s site

Astral kicks off a night of dangerous headscissors
Astral kicks off a night of dangerous headscissors

Match 1: Astral & Eléctrico vs Demus 3:16 & Pequeño Olímpico
Arena México, 02/05/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Eléctrico springboard elbow drop Demus 3:16 (5:49)
    • COR Olímpico (6:09)
  2. rudos
    • Astral top rope splash Pequeño Olímpico (4:16)
    • Demus nudo lagunero variation Astral (4:46)
    • Demus valagueza Eléctrico (5:02)
  3. tecnicos
    • Eléctrico straight jacker cavernaria Pequeño Olímpico (3:58)
    • COR Demus (4:18)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 14:29

Review: [ok] kind of boring, and kind of sloppy at times. Olímpico is not a guy who does a lot, but he didn’t do much here and had a horrible legdrop to boot. This didn’t have the energy of other matches, but it did have the all the Astral back marks you wanted. On the good side, the Astral springboard headscissors went the best of all the times they’ve tried it.

Zeuxis double knee smash

Match 2: Estrellita, Marcela, Princesa Sugehit vs Amapola, Dalys, Zeuxis
Arena México, 02/05/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Marcela Michinoku Driver Zeuxis (6:00)
  2. rudas
    • Zeuxis double knee smash Marcela (1:57)
  3. rudas
    • Amapola Devil’s Wings Princesa Sugehit (3:16)
    • Dalys powerbomb Estrellita (3:36)

Winner: rudas (2-1)
Match Time: 11:33

Review: [ok] rudas did some fun stuff, as they tend to do, in an otherwise ordinary match. Dalys and Zeuxis are becoming a fun team, which seems utterly pointless in CMLL but good on them for demonstrating the effort. Zeuxis is going to destroy someone with the double knee smash someday. The multiple senton spot all the rudas are doing would get over in the WWE, I think.

Match 3: Stuka Jr. vs Boby Z in a lightning match
Arena México, 02/05/2016

Winner: Bobby Z (dropkick)
Match Time: 6:29

Review: [good] a surprisingly good lightning match. They were going top speed from the start, right into a series of near falls without wasting any time, and Stuka’s bullet tope looked great. It was the first of three dives in five minutes, but it still felt like they were doing stuff inside the ring. It just had a really fast pace with both guys working very hard. I liked the finish too, with Zavala quickly adding one more hard dropkick after almost beating Stuka with the dropkick.

Match 4: Blue Panther, La Máscara, Titán vs Luciferno, Rey Bucanero, Vangellys
Arena México, 02/05/2016

  1. rudos
    • Rey Bucanero Buca Storm La Mascara (4:13)
  2. tecnicos
    • Blue Panther Farmer’s Roll Vangellys (2:25)
    • Titan Capture Luciferno (2:47)
  3. tecnicos
    • Super Luciferno Crash on Titan (5:20)
    • La Mascara campana Rey Bucanero (6:32)

Winner: tencicos (21-1)
Match Time: 13:32

Review: [good] A match that definitely benefit from the energy of the hot crowd. This didn’t look super promising on paper, but the rudos showed more effort than normal and La Mascara had a good night. He came off as a star in this match, especially the sequence leading to the corner tope and when he won the match. Titan had a good match too, though his biggest moments were probably when things went wrong: his first dive being caught and dropped, and the giant Super Luciferno Clash that ended his match.

Dragon Lee still good in his home ring
Dragon Lee still good in his home ring

Match 5: Dragón Lee, Marco Corleone, Máximo Sexy vs Kamaitachi, Terrible, Último Guerrero
Arena México, 02/05/2016

  1. rudos
    • Kamaitachi ramp dropkick Dragon Lee (3:1)
    • Terrible suplex Marco (3:19)
  2. tecnicos
    • Marco Corleone Air CorleoneUltimo Guerrero (1:46)
  3. tecnicos
    • Dragon Lee Spanish Fly Kamaitachi (5:04)
    • Máximo Kiss of Death Terrible (5:16)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 10:29

Review: [good] I wish they got more time; they didn’t get to do as much as the previous match, and that was actually better in some ways. This was much more of an all star exhibition. It still had enough to like it, but the bar for Kamaitachi/Dragon Lee encounters is really high. They were part of this match and Dragon Lee definitely benefited from being in with these two other tecnicos (who were wildly over with this crowd), but it wasn’t about them as much as their recent matches. A quieter night for them still means Kamaitachi flies far in the air off Dragon Lee’s headscissors over the apron. No title challenge between them is interesting; that still seems like it should be the program but maybe it’s not an immediate one. It’s a strange to see Ultimo Guerrero in matches which have nothing to do with Thunder.

Match 6: Máscara Dorada, Mistico, Volador Jr. vs Cavernario, Mephisto, Negro Casas
Arena México, 02/05/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Mascara Dorada Dorada Screwdriver Cavernario (1:25)
    • Mistico springboard huracanrana Mephisto (1:32)
  2. rudos
    • DQ Volador [Negro Casas faked foul] (3:08)
  3. tecnicos
    • Volador foul Negro Casas (3:50)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 8:30
Notes: Tirantes was distracted and missed Casas fake a foul after Volador gave him a backcracker in the first fall. Tirantes was taken out in the second, and Volador did foul him that time for the win. Volador again challenged Negro Casas for the title, and Negro Casas again walked out.

Review: [good] generous grade, because there wasn’t much time fo much but Mascara Dorada to do all his neat spots and Casas & Volador to feud but Dorada did all his neat spots and that was cool. He looked like a star in his time in, though they could’ve done more to present him as one. Dorada, Volador and Mistico looked like a great trio in this match, though they had a good trio to work with. Cavernario was especially seemed on. The Volador/Casas stuff was slight but worked well. They teased more developments this week than they delieved.
