Alberto Dos Rios vs Belial
Arena Femenil, Monterrey, Nuevo León, 10/03/2015
Video:
RIOT WA

Winner: Alberto (Canadian Destroyer)
Match Time: 9:20
Notes: This (and the following match) are from the debut show of RIOT. Arez comes out as if he’s the surprise wrestler, but it’s a fake out for Belial to sneak in the ring and attack Alberto to start the match.

Review: [ok] 2015: quality HD video from small indie promotions while I still can only CMLL on TV in SD. (This seemed edited together with multiple angles better than most indie shows, and definitely better than IWRG.) A match just of moves, with guys taking turns doing spots and not so much worrying about the spots in between. Some of the moves were good, and Alberto did more here than I’ve seen out of him on Noches, but there was nothing even approaching the idea of a build and little flow to the match. It was one where I tried to figure out why different people were in control early, and then I ended up just kind of shrugged later on. They’ve got the talent to add a bit more drama to this. The angle to set up the match was amusing.

Dralion vs Rey Horus
Arena Femenil, Monterrey, Nuevo León, 10/03/2015
Video:
RIOT WA

Winner: Dralion (double dragon suplex)
Match Time: 20:13

Review: [great] 2015 seems like a year full with good indie matches between big stars and local names. Horuz isn’t as big as Volador in Mexico, but he did the touring big star bit well here: coming back after the local guy had his run, acting as if he was going to put him away easily, and getting frustrated when the local turned out to be a lot harder to beat. Dralion was another Monterrey guy who looked better here, with the suplexes he used early and late looking better than his dives. Horuz still seemed the more complete luchador, but Dralion was close enough to him that it made the match a fair fight and a deserved underdog victory. (Crowd didn’t react as much as I would’ve thought.) It went well for the time, though it seemed like it may have one too many dive spots. They were trying to do everything to make the main event work and they still did it in a way where it felt like the match had some momentum. This one had a little more shooting issues; it would’ve been nice if we could’ve seen all of Rey Horuz’s dive over the referee.

  1. Maximo half crab (3:18)

  2. Terrible Michinoku Driver (0:32)

  3. Maximo armdrag (6:17)

Winner: Maximo (2-1)
Match Time: 10:07

Review: [good] Maximo perfunctory title defense. Terrible challenged but didn’t come off as a challenge, and this was mostly the usual sped up title match. Two quick falls and immediately into the near falls made it feel less than significant. Some of that may just be editing, but it forced the drama. The match felt repetitive too – the moment Maximo did the rope walk plancha, it felt like this was the Euforia match between recycled. It still went fine (outside of maybe a missed trip spot) and the formula was enough to get the fans into it at the end, but this is not a very memorable match.

Match Time: 9:45

Review: [ok] regular tag team match; hope for something a bit more for the Gringos break up and for a sort of rudo/rudo battle, but they were hurrying thru to this to get to the match they actually wanted. It was a brawl from the start and made sense, but the action was never really notable to me. Diablo Jr. I being “Diablo Jr. I” when there’s not (yet) a second one is all kinds of awkward.

that’s someone’s bag!

Notes: Seconds are Hijo del Diablo and Mike.

Review: [great] I was really set up not to like it: I’m getting burned out on all these catchup matches, I’m really getting bored with IWRG, there was classic AYM production stupidity in this match (Impossible does the same stairs spot in every single match and they have no idea how to shoot it) and it seemed like it was another greatest hits match. They won me back in the last few minutes, with a lot of good near falls for both guys, and finished at the right time. Imposible could use a new challenge, but Pantera I acquitted himself well. His presence on these shows in 2015 has felt strange, given his backstory, but his wrestling is fine.

weird cut is how it aired originally, replayed later

Winner: Insportables
Match Time: 19:37

Review: [ok] disappointing end to the feud; you should stick to that trios match from the last group if you want to watch something from this. The match layout was all weird, with tecnicos Terry/Cerbero getting the heavy majority of the offense over rudos Eterno/Apolo to apparently balance out the other team winning – only, except for the last couple minutes, when the crowd would’ve gone nuts for a Terry strong near fall and Eterno just beats on him for a minute before getting the referee’s lame help to win. Maybe all of that could’ve been overcome if the action was really good, but it was a slow methodical brawl that just randomly turned into a normal match in the third fall for no apparent reason. The big spots they tried to do – the stacked up superplex – looked more like death for everyone. Eterno falling off the top rope didn’t do anything for this match, and neither did the way he won. It didn’t even get more “heat” for him for cheating, since it was such a lame finish.
