First defense. Demon was eliminated first, then returned to foul the referee. Psycho fouled Wagner while the ref was recovering.
Looks like a full house or close to it. Not sure if it’ll air, but I’m sure highlights will be on +LuchaTV.
Today looked to be a very busy day a few weeks ago. It’s now a day with one show and one big match.
The match that is Dragon Lee versus Kamaitachi, facing off for the fourth time in a title match. (The one no one can remember is a show in Oaxaca; only a clip of it turned up on YouTube.) They’ve also faced five times in lightning matches, one Retros Coliseo match and the one mask match. Kamaitachi currently isn’t listed in any CMLL matches after today – he’s listed on DF indy show next Sunday, but that’s not exactly binding – so it’s even possible tonight is Kamiatachi last night as CMLL regular. If it’s not tonight, it’s some night soon – and it’s possible this will be the last time Dragon Lee & Kamaitachi face off in a singles match. CMLL’s preview pushes it as such.
I think they will face again, though, and probably about six weeks from now. Kamaitachi/Dragon Lee has been the best feud of the year, something that’s just been mostly about match quality, but the match quality has somehow gotten better each and every time. I’m sure NJPW will be running that match back out for FantasticaMania, and what better way to reintroduce Kamaitachi to NJPW (and get Dragon Lee over in his debut) than to run that as a Kamaitachi title defense again in January? Today’s happens to be Kamaitachi’s birthday, and he might end up with a nice present.
The rest of the show is a show. Tonight’s main event has a rematch from last week, with Mistico, Super Parka and Volador Jr. versus Felino, Negro Casas and Shocker. Last week’s match had a heavy tease of Super Parka & Negro Casas, which didn’t seem to be a great idea. CMLL does seem to change programs quicker nowadays when they’re not going well, but that doesn’t mean they’ll abandon them.
On that note, Thunder and Ultimo Guerrero match up again in the fourth match, teaming with Cavernario, Mephisto, Euforia and Niebla Roja (in his Arena Mexico return.) This is Thunder’s first match on Friday night in three weeks, with only a single Tuesday night match in between. The UG/Thunder feud has ramped up and down since July and show no signs of actually ending. The undercard has a Super Porky/Maximo match, a women’s match and a slightly better than usual opener. Soberano Jr. can’t do dives in the first match, but will probably find a way to fly around anyway.
The page is already up for the live feed, which will begin around 8:30 pm.
Plantilla Deportiva has a video interview with Dragon Lee, but there’s annoying static through it.
This show may be what passes for the CMLL End of Year show. At one point, AAA was going to have their own End Of Year show on this same day. Guerra de Titanes was scheduled to take place tonight in Tampico, but was canceled a week and a half ago. No official announcement has been made about it’s future, but people with the promotion say the plan is to hold the event in January instead.
The End of Year tradition comes from a period where lucha libre would leave Arena Mexico for a few weeks late in the year to make way for the circus. It was a regular event, but it’s something that hasn’t been going on since the earliest days of this blog. CMLL not running a major End of Year show fits with a pattern of trying to skate by with doing as little as possible, but it also may reflect a shifting reality in which are the good dates to draw.
The CMLL’s annual (01/06) Three Kings show has grown bigger each recent year, usually featuring either an apuesta match opening match wrestlers, a Pequenos Reyes del Aire, or a big singles match. It’s probably the date the date Panther/Comando is will happen, especially if it’s a singles match. CMLL’s also put more emphasis on Christmas Day (or nearby) shows, ones which wouldn’t have been possible in Arena Mexico in the past. It’s tricker to run big shows during the holiday period – people do go home or on vacations and it’s just as easy to farm the talent to indy promotions who will also be running on those dates – but the artificial deadline which created the Early December Year End Show isn’t really there for CMLL anymore and maybe it makes sense on other days.
It’s not really there for AAA either. Five years from now, the only weird thing about Guerra de Titanes might be if AAA ends up holding two in a calendar year. (Steal an idea from NJPW and go with something like “New Beginning” if it’s January.) The bigger issues at the moment are the embarrassment from canceling a show, the lack of public information about what’s going on, and the general lack of anything going past this taping on Friday. It’s easy to forget about you when if you completely disappear for a month or more. It’d be great if there were good matches and excitement in Neza, but there at least needs to be a firm next date announced for a next show.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter says Rey Mysterio Jr. is not expected to work as much in AAA in 2016. I have Rey as working 33 matches in Mexico this year, about 15 TV events. AAA lost Perro, Alberto, and Caristico really needs to get behind a new star if Rey’s not going to be around.
The WON also notes Speedball Mike Bailey appeared to finish with the Que Viva el Rey tour, since he’s not booked any more. “They are hopeful of him returning but nothing is concrete.” Never giving him much of an introduction makes a little more sense if they only were sure of having him for a couple months.
DTU has a poster for their 8th Anniversary show. It’ll be 12/19 at Arena Lopez Mateos, with Black Psicosis II, Valiente, Titan, Blue Panther, Black Terry, and Shyru Dragon listed as a guest appearances. There’s no matches specifically announced, but the position of the images on the poster suggests the matches. We know the Nerds are to face off in a three way and they’re together at the top, the four at the bottom are also facing in a match, and you can kind of guess in between. (That would imply some sort of Blue Panther/Black Terry match.)
Delta, who’s not on that DTU show, says that all the independent luchadors dream of wrestling in Arena Mexico.
