Recapped: 11/10/2015

What happened: Mephisto beat Dragon Lee in the main event, but cheated to do it. Princesa Sugehit defeated Zeuxis in a trios match to set up a title match next week.

What was good:  The opener, the tercera and the main event were good, with Dragon Lee/Mephisto beating the best. However…

Where can I watch it: it’s on my YouTube channel, but the videos are awful. This was off the Ciudad Juarez feed, the first time I had used it in months, and the files are just horrible. I feel bad I couldn’t find a better way to grab these, but the audio is out of sync and the video goes in and out. (My best solution to watch it was in 2x fast forward, which smoothed out the video and eliminated the audio.) Dragon Lee put out his usual big performance, but you don’t want to deal with this video.

Match 1: Astral, Eléctrico, Fantasy vs Mercurio, Pequeño Nitro, Pequeño Olímpico
Arena México, 10/13/2015

  1. rudos
    • Mercurio powerbomb Astral (~5:39)
  2. tecnicos
    • Electrico powerbomb Mercurio (3:16)
  3. rudos
    • Mercurio Spanish Fly Pequeño Olimpico (3:41)

Winner: rudos (2-1)
Match Time: ~12:36
Notes: The first minute is missing due to recording issues.

Review: [good] Hard to watch due to the video issues, but seemed like an athletic active minis match with Mercurio seemingly in for his side the entire time. Astral is moving better of late, which is kind of frightening given his size. Finish was a neat idea.

Match 2: Lluvia, Princesa Sugehit, Skadi vs La Seductora, Reyna Isis, Zeuxis

  1. tecnicas
    • DQ Zeuxis [mask pull Sugehit] (7:58)
  2. tecnicas
    • Princesa Sugehit satellite armbar Zeuxis (6:06)

Winner: tecnicas (2-1)
Match Time: 14:04
Notes: Sugehit challenges Zeuxis to a title match for next week.

Review: [ok] who would’ve guessed this would be unwatchable for reasons other than Isis and Skadi? They even have a big opening exchange, but my recording is far worse than anything they could do. Zeuxis is a pretty great troll in this match, antagonizing Sugehit and while being totally confident. Sugehit who some good fire fighting back, and I’m a little bit interested in that title match.

  1. rudos
    • Hechicero conjuro Triton (7:13)
    • Okumura hanging DDT The Panther (7:13)
  2. tecnicos
    • Fuego Flashina Disturbio (5:09)
    • Triton 450 splash Okumura (5:09)
  3. tecnicos
    • The Panther fujiwara Hechicero (3:19)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 15:41

Review: [good] Another solid match from the midcard pool. We really haven’t gotten to see a lot of Hechicero versus the Panther (or Cavernario versus the Panther) since last year’s tournament, and Hechicero’s a lot better opponent than the guys he’s been working with. Panther looked good in the match section and later in the match. Wasn’t as much a fan of him going from taking the buckle bomb to winning the match, though that’s an established surprise spot. Triton had a good night and the Fuego/Okumura guys did their usual thing. There’s a 100 of these matches every year and they’re generally good like this one.

Panther won’t let go
Hechicero apparently casted an invisibility spell

Stellar Moments

El Triunfo: Stukita top rope splash onto the ramp on Demus

Lo Sensacional: Triton springboard moonsault onto Okumura

La Llave: Nudo Hechicero on Heddi Karaoui (who’s name is spelled wrong)

Lo Doloraso: Guerrero Maya takes a hard fall to the floor on a Gran Guerrero dropkick

Lo Espectacular: Stuka moonsault over the corner onto Hechicero.

Match 4: Rey Cometa, Super Porky, Titán vs Cavernario, Felino, Mr. Niebla
Arena México, 10/13/2015
Video:
thecubsfan

  1. Peste Negra
    • Barbaro Cavernario springboard splash Rey Cometa (4:17)
    • Felino reverse armbar Titan (4:24)
  2. tecnicos
    • Rey Cometa Canadian Destroyer Barbaro Cavernario (2:39)
    • Titan rope flip moonsault Felino (2:47)
  3. tecnicos
    • Super Porky sit Mr. Niebla (4:48)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 11:59

Review: [ok] Peste Negra & Super Porky comedy, mostly. Not sure why Super Porky mocking the spit spot can be shown but Niebla actually doing it can’t. Not sure if Titan and Felino had the same move in mind for the first fall finish. The Cavernario/Titan sequence in the third fall is about as good as it’s going to get in a meaningless trios match, but it’s a meaningless trios match.

Match 5: Dragon Lee vs Mephisto
Arena México, 10/13/2015
Video:
thecubsfan

  1. Mephisto powerbomb (2:27)
  2. Dragon Lee huracanrana (2:23)
  3. Mephisto Devil’s Wings with feet on the ropes (7:18)

Winner: Mephisto (2-1)
Match Time: 12:08
Notes: Mephisto scissored the ropes with his feet for the win. Bestia Negra didn’t notice.

Review: [good] Really felt bad about this match not getting more time with Dragon Lee doing all his big moves, but then it was a Mephisto match and there wasn’t a lot to it. This was a very good match but the bar is high with Dragon Lee and Mephisto didn’t add as much as other opponents. Mephisto’s great in that he’ll take whatever crazy spot his opponent wants to do – he took both dives, a bridging back suplex here and the over the top headscissors to the floor – but he doesn’t add much himself besides the CMLL big singles match tropes and he’s not going to pull it together into a story like his old partner Averno might. The finish especially was abrupt, coming after a Dragon Lee run of moves with no particular in between moment, and with Mephisto winning after a singles Devil’s Wings when that never works for him anymore. I didn’t expect the match to end even when he was using the ropes, because it was so sudden. This had a few more minutes left in it generally and would be better with a rematch.
