CMLL Puebla: 2015-08-31

everyone loves Sombra (but not as much as Sombra loves Sombra)

Recapped: 08/31/2015

What happened? Ultimo Guerrero defeated La Sombra for the NWA middleweight championship for no particular reason. Mr. Niebla and La Mascara agreed to have a (bad) match next week.

What was good? The title match was fine out of context. (It greatly angered me in context.)

Where can I watch? It’s on CMLL’s YouTube channel.

Match 1: La Vaquerita, Marcela, Skadi vs La Seductora, Tiffany, Zeuxis
Arena Puebla, 08/31/2015

that’s a lot of dropkick
  1. tecnicas
    • Skadi side backbreaker Seductora (5:21)
    • Vaqueritoa top rope elbow drop Tiffany (5:41)
  2. rudas
    • Zeuxis La Roca Vaquerita (2:51)
    • Tiffany figure four Marcela (3:24)
  3. tecnicas
    • Marcela top rope double stomp Zexuis (4:12)

Winner: tecnicas (2-1)
Match Time: 13:17

Review: [below average] in ring training time for Skadi & Vaquerita disguised as a match. Marcela mostly sat this one out and let the younger women try to do things, which they had mild success at attempting. Skadi just doesn’t seem all that excited about being there most of the time. I was caught off guard when she celebrated after the double team because it was an actual celebration. There’s not much to get out of this match.

somehow, this doesn’t hurt Vaquerita

Match 2: Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., Stigma vs Kamaitachi, Morphosis, Okumura
Arena Puebla, 08/31/2015

  1. tecnicos
    • Guerrero Maya top rope splash Okumura (5:39)
    • Delta huracanrana Morphosis (5:53)
  2. rudos
    • Okumura hanging DDT Stigma (5:28)
    • Morphosis running flip legdrop Delta (5:47)
  3. rudos
    • Kamaitachi top rope double knee smash Guerrero Maya (4:10)
Kamaitachi actually wins!

Winner: rudos (2-1)
Match Time: 15:50

Review: [ok] usual midcard match. Kamaitachi brought the most life and some moves looked very sharp. Okumura’s DDT on Stigma looked great. Most of the match is interchange able with a lot of other matches. Kamaitachi getting a clean third fall win in a non-Dragon Lee match is disorienting.

gif: double knee smash for the win

Match 3: Blue Panther, Stuka Jr., Super Porky vs Kráneo, Olímpico, Ripper
Arena Puebla, 08/31/2015

  1. tecnicos
    • Stuka torpedo splash Ripper & Olimpico (5:41)
  2. Invasors
    • Kraneo legdrop Blue Panther (1:54)
    • Ripper pin Stuka (2:29)
  3. tecnicos
    • Blue Panther nudo laguenro (3:14)
    • Super Porky sit Kraneo (3:!4)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 11:24

Review: [below average] less energetic version of the usual Super Porky/Kraneo match. It felt like nothing was happening even when things are happening. This was mailed in by even usual standards. Kraneo and Mije weren’t good enough to make me care. Tirantes allowed the tecnicos to pile on the rudos in the first fall, but waved off a submission in the second fall when Kraneo helped a two man submission. I dunno.

the legdrop seems unnecessary, Mije had this

Match 4: La Máscara, Marco Corleone, Máximo vs Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas, Shocker
Arena Puebla, 08/31/2015

  1. rudos
    • Mr. Niebla tirabuzon La Mascara (2:04)
  2. tecnicos
    • Maximo casita Shocker (3:12)
    • Marco Corleone reverse chinlock Negro Casas (3:15)
  3. tecnicos
    • DQ Mr. Niebla [foul to La Mascara] (4:03)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 9:22
Notes: Niebla & Mascara agreed to a match next week.

Review: [ok] maybe this was decent? I’ve mostly given up at this point because it seemed like a better idea to scan social media for AAA results. This did seem better than the last match, though again it’s match where everything feels very totally familiar. This show definitely had the feel of the last show of a loop. They have better routines.

Match 5: La Sombra © vs Último Guerrero for the NWA World Middleweight Championship
Arena Puebla, 08/31/2015

no fun
  1. Sombra Shadow Driver (4:24)
  2. Pulpo Guerrero on Sombra (2:41)
  3. Ultimo Guerrero small package (8:56)

Winner: Ultimo Guerrero
Match Time: 16:01
Notes: Referee is Tirantes. Guerrero pulls Sombra’s mask to set up the pin and title change.

Review: [good] a stunning and absurd result just kind of makes it hard to evaluate the whole match and not just the finish. There’s absolutely no way Sombra should be losing this match. Not at all going into the Anniversary show, and Ultimo Guerrero was not a guy who would ever benefit from that win. The match was alright, even good by their standards, with Sombra looking superb and breaking up the usual UG formula just enough not to be annoying. The little things, like the flip escape early on and the springboard dropkick, looked really sharp. UG did not do as much as he did with Rey Escorpión, but he did more than most people on this show. I could never imagine wanting to watch it again because Sombra losing is just so dumb, but the match is good in a vacuum.

Shadow Driver
a good middleweight clothesline
almost enough
