A show. The Panthers seem to be back to feuding with Comando Boricua. The lightning matches are back, and back to being posted on YouTube channel.
It appears Mr. Niebla was suspended and Sombra unsuspended by CMLL. Niebla appeared to be drunk on Monday’s Puebla card, and might be gone from the promotion again. Sombra takes his place in a reconfigured main event. It’s now a relevos increibles with unlikely partners Volador, Sombra and Cavernario taking on Atlantis, Marco Corleone and Negro Casas. This is the third different Friday night card they’ve had this week already.
Sombra’s also hosting the TuriLuchas bus on Friday. (He was promoted for Tuesday, but that turned out to be Cavernario instead.)
Furia de Titanes says CMLL will announce the full Anniversary card next week. Three weeks out seems the right timing, but it also seems pretty quick. It seems meaningful that Sombra’s added back to Friday’s card, since that’s the night to set up matches if they’re really announcing the card on Wednesday.
Lucha Underground
Tonight’s episode is 39 (of 39), Ultima Lucha Part 2. Matches announced:
- Prince Puma (c) versus Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) for the Lucha Underground championship
- Alberto el Patron versus Johnny Mundo
- Vampiro versus Pentagon Jr. in a Cero Miedo match (clip)

As noted repeatedly, they also taped a battle royal including everyone in the promotion who does not have a match tonight. It hasn’t been said if it’ll air, but probably will. There’s got to be something with Dragon Azteca & Black Lotus too. With Vampiro wrestling, MMA commentator Michael Schiavello joins Matt Striker as announcer.
They’ll generally be hinting at storylines which we’d see in a season 2. They may be even hinting at the existence of season 2.
Alberto versus Mundo opens the show; Alberto’s made it clear he’s not happy about that. Alberto’s also not happy about the editing. Twitter Alberto seems like an an unhappy person lately.
The Vampiro returns vignette is worth a second look (or a first one if you’ve missed it.) Comic Book Resources notes it’s a little bit of a homage to a scene on the recent Daredevil series.
The Last Real Heels have a review of their main event appearance on last week’s show. They made a great point: Dragon Azteca dying tonight is totally believable because we’ve already seen one guy lose his life. You can’t say it won’t happen because it totally has already happened. They’ve also got a fun podcast with Marty the Moth.
Rolling Stone has a piece on visiting the Ultima Lucha tapings, reveals the graffiti on the building is part of the story telling. Literally.
TripleMania
Konnan was on Wrestling Observer, Rudo Radio and a Reddit AMA. Rey Jr.’s been on a ton of outlets: here’s him talking on WrestlingInc: Part 1 and Part 2. The Rudo Radio also has a recap of how the Ultima Lucha part 1 matches changed from live to TV.
There’s a lot of Konnan and Rey Jr. interviews leading into TripleMania. There’s a lot of similar questions, as you’d expect. Rey is saying only positive things about his time in WWE, even going as far as saying he’d be open to going back (though that’s if his son wanted to wrestle there and Rey Jr. going back would help.) He tuned out on the wrestling business while he was in WWE, preferring to spend the not-enough time he had away from work focusing on his family. All the young AAA guys are new to him and he’s impressed in what he’s seen, specifically bringing up Pentagon sometimes. He’s excited for Sunday’s match with Myzteziz. Rey says he’s not signed with Lucha underground and people were making too much of him hanging out with Konnan at the shows, but he’d be happy to work with them in season 2 if the deal was right.
There were four important news notes on the Wrestling Observer podcast. Konnan claimed 70% of TripleMania’s tickets have already been sold. (The ticket map backs that up.) Konnan also said Flamita’s current Dragon Gate tour is his final one, and he’ll be with AAA full time. Konnan said Flamita didn’t come in earlier because they wanted to have something ready for him, not just be on cards. Konnan also used mentioned in passing that this was the same reason Holocausto group took so long to start, he didn’t want them to get lost in the mix. (Konnan listed Parka Negra in that trio, which might be just forgetfulness or might be bad news for Kronos.)
The other news is Perro news. Konnan mentioned that the plan for this year’s TripleMania was Perro versus Rey Misterio, not the Myzteiz/Perro match that had been rumored. Going back farther, Konnan said the big surprise that never happened back at Guerra de Titanes 2013 was a Perro Aguayo Jr. tecnico turn. (This might have come up in the past.) Perro was actually on the tecnico side in the main event, they did a bunch of run-ins which led to the La Sociedad being back as the big ‘surprise’, then Konnan hinted on podcast that it only came back because they needed some surprise after the original plan fell thru. Perro would’ve been with Ciberentico, La Parka, and Mesias, which would’ve left a massive gap on the rudo side. The story was really about Perro, so there wasn’t a lot of talk about what AAA would’ve looked like. Texano was champion at that point, but appeared to already be feuding with Psycho Clown. Maybe new people would’ve been elevated (though it’d be tough to get wins over that crew) or Jeff Jarrett would’ve been used more. As it turned out, Perro staying on the rudo side set him up to face Myzteziz and Alberto el Patron, and that was working out OK.
On the Rudo Radio podcast, Konnan mentioned Machine Rocker as part of a list of guys who he’s high on that Americans haven’t seen it. Konnan said Machine Rocker was in the TripleMania opener, which is a surprise – he’s on the Colombia trip. Maybe just a mistake, but I’m holding out hope there’s a secret dark match with everyone on the Colombia tour in a battle royal.
Otherwise, it’s a lot of stuff Konnan has said on his MLW podcast (which he made sure to promote!) He says Lucha Underground is coming back for a second season and says TV networks sometimes just take a while to make a second season, but also said it should be back soon. He also noted he’s not the one who’d announce something like that. He’s excited about the young talent in AAA and really likes what he sees on the US indies, both in how the wrestlers interact with the fans and how the veterans are fine putting over younger wrestlers. Konnan says there are plans for AAA’s Mexico show to come back to US, but no specifics.
AAA had it’s annual pre-TripleMania pilgrimage yesterday. More photos and video here. It looks pretty well attended by fans. Of those who were there, Psycho Clown, Cibernetico and La Parka seemed to get the most autograph and photo requests.
A story in El Economist talks about AAA’s business model, says they hope to reach 4,000 to 8,000 internet PPV buyers. I recall the Observer reporting Ring of Honor got around 2,000 buys for it’s iPPVs before the tech imploded, but that’s years ago. CMLL is getting around 350 concurrent viewers for it’s free YouTube stream.

Other Notes
IWRG’s changed their Sunday card around; Dr. Wagner Jr. was double booked, and now he’s just not booked. His son will take his place, though his team with Veneno & Danny Casas now fight the Capos. The Navarros move up to challenge the Piratas for the trios titles; it’s the first trios title match since October.
This was the third newspaper recap I read of Arena Puebla’s show. None have even mentioned Mr. Niebla looking drunk. (Some places will says someone a bad performance, without saying why. Not even that here.) I appreciate all newspaper coverage of lucha libre shows, but it’s depressing for smart people to go out of their way not to mention the obvious. I’m not sure if they’re concerned about losing access or if they just feel like they’re an extension of the team (or if it’s people who actually work for the promotion sending the recap to the newspapers for them), but it’s not that much more embarrassing than Niebla’ behavior.

In the article about Latin Lover attribute the muscle loss to his wrestling career. I think it’s more to do with the pain from fibromyalgia slowing him down. He’s probably not working out as hard as he did before that happened to him.
