CMLL Lucha Azteca: 2015-07-04

fans often frame photos of Ultimo Guerrero standing in front of a green screen

A pretty good TV angle for Escorpion/Guerrero.

Review: [ok] Decent match. I think I’m good for paying attention to about 3 minutes of TGR being in control of a match before I reach for the phone (though, I’m pretty terrible about that at all times.) This was not so much different. TGR do tend to work as rudos in their matches, so it’s does allow them to stay in their normal role, but also means one long rudo beatdown after another. Marco Corleone, reflexive punching machine, is still an amusing comedy bit. Naito must’ve done something kind of amazing for them to cut away in the middle of his Shocker taunt. Naito was at least smart enough not to try something tricky with Shocker caching.

Naito particularly weak against DDTs

Match 2: Ángel de Oro, Stuka Jr., Super Porky vs Bárbaro Cavernario, Felino, Okumura

  3. técnicos
    • Super Porky failed body slam Felino (2:42)

Winner: técnicos (2-1)

Notes: Felino wears his mask again for no particular reason.

death of an Angel

Review: [ok] I think I saw this on Terra? I think I didn’t need to see this again? A Super Porky match, with the other guys not taking the night off but not having to do more than few trademark spots. Super Porky took a series of bumps in this match, which was as crazy as anything that happened in Alas de Oro. Probably just as ill advised. They almost couldn’t get him over for the suplex in the first fall.

“serious and stable”
fantastic use of slow motion

Match 3: Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero ©  vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Rey Escorpión, Thunder ©
Arena México, 06/19/2015

  1. Guerreros
    • Ultimo Guerrero front superplex Rey Escorpion (3:44)
    • DQ Rey Escorpion [illegal reenty] (4:16)
  2. Guerreros
    • Ultimo Guerrero superbomb Rey Escorpion (3:10)
    • Thunder northern lights suplex Gran Guerrero (3:47)
    • DQ Rey Escorpion [weapon usage] (5:09)

Winner: Guerreros (2-0)
Match Time: 9:25
Notes: Revolucionarios jump Ultimo Guerrero to start the match. Guerreros manage to turn it around after a few minutes. Rey Escorpion grabbed a framed portrait of Ultimo Guerrero from a ‘fan’ on the camera right side of the stage and smashed it over Ultimo Guerrero’s head to provide for the final DQ.

flying Euforia

Review: [ok] More of an angle than a match, with Escorpion going out of his way to get disqualified in order to build up the big match. It needed the build up. Probably shouldn’t have wasted the comeback in the second fall if they were just going to do it again a couple minutes later in the second fall. It didn’t get any reaction the second time. Crowd isn’t into técnico Ultimo Guerrero as much as they need to be for this to work. They’ll come with him if they give him time to react. Maybe the hope is the casual fan base who comes in for the big shows will be far more into Ultimo Guerrero, as they have in the past. Rey Escorpion misheard the count and screwed up his second fall elimination, which only ended up hurting him. Ultimo Guerrero pinning him twice would seem to hurt him as well, but what do I know. It did serve as a weird fake out that this feud was going to be Thunder and UG instead. If you watch, the plant in the crowd with the framed photo holds it up in the air to be seen for about two minutes before Escorpion grabs it. Escorpion knew to wait until the last second as not to give it away, but his friend was a lot more concerned about being missed. (He also reacts in shock and horror when Escorpion uses it.) The end result produced some great visuals, which would be very useful if anyone in México saw them. This is very much a TV angle for a promotion with bad TV.
