judges discover there’s no one good in this year’s En Busca de un Idolo, Lucha Underground preview

round 1 of this competition

CMLL (TUE) 06/09/2015 Arena México [CMLL, Yahoo! Deportes]
1) Artillero & Súper Comando b Bengala & Molotov
2) Metálico, Nitro, Sangre Azteca b Magnus, Starman, Stigma
3) Esfinge COR Flyer [En Busca de un Idolo]
Flyer slipped trying a springboard, then tried it again and completely missed on his dive. Esfinge later won on a springboard splash to the floor. La Sombra was the guest judge. He was harsh but honest – all four judges were harsh. Esfinge scored a 6 (Sombra), 6 (Gladiador), 5 (Shocker), 4 (Tirantes) for 21. Flyer got a 4, 6, 5, 2 for a 17.
4) Blue Panther Jr. b Disturbio [En Busca de un Idolo]
Panther won with a nudo lagunero. Panther was yelled at for being boring, while Disturbio was yelled at for not being in shape. Panther scored a 4 (Sombra), 5 (Gladiador), 6 (Shocker), 3 (Tirantes) for an 18. Disturbio scored an 8, 5, 5, 4 for a 22. Sombra later revealed he meant to give Disturbio a 3 but grabbed a random paddle by mistake and so Disturbio got the 8.
5) Blue Panther, The Panther, Valiente b Kráneo, Puma, Tiger
The Panther and Blue Panther also won with nudo laguneros.
6) Dragon Lee, Mistico, Titán DQ Kamaitachi, Pólvora, Ripper
straight falls, Kamaitachi pulling Dragon Lee’s mask for the DQ.

They’re going to keep doing Dragon Lee/Kamaitachi until one of them dies (and/or returns to Japan.)

Tirantes said Disturbio is one of three people he thinks should advance. I’m assuming he meant Zavala & Maya as the other two. He did raise a good point – this is Disturbio’s big chance, and it doesn’t look he’s gotten in any better shape or made any change to improve his look. That’s not going to fly with a judging panel that’s heavily focused on look. The best possible arc for him fits a usual reality star search show storyline: the person with talent to be a star gets criticized for not looking like a star until he finally starts fixing his hair and dressing better. (In other words, hope Princesa Dorada start posting video of Disturbio on a treadmill and buying new gear if you’re a Disturbio fan.)

Voting is open, probably from now until Friday. It looks fairly close system to the previous years – the same method of stuffing votes still worked.

CMLL has also swapped out Tiffany for Zeuxis on Sunday’s show, and officially made Saturday’s women cibernetico a #1 contenders match.

Today’s Lucha Underground is episode 31. The title is [spoiler]. Most of the matches would be spoilers at this point.

  • Blue Demon Jr. returns
  • Super Fly versus Famous B
  • The Disciples of Death (Mil Muertes’ zombies) vs Pimpinela, Mascarita Sagrada, and the debuting Bengala
  • a fourth match announced early in the show

There’s a clip of the entrances for the trios match.

Some things which occurred on this show seemed pretty abrupt on the taping, but make more sense now that they’ve shown backstage vignettes to fill in the gaps. This show sets the destination for the rest of the season.

Chris DeJospeh was on Tazz’s Human Podcast Machine, talking about Lucha Underground. It’s a lot of the ‘how Chris DeJoseph came to be on Lucha Underground’ story as heard on previous podcasts, but there were some interesting details. The vignettes are usually taped on the Thursday and Fridays before each taping, and it takes about 3 weeks to turn a show around. He mentioned the look of the vignettes was originally only supposed to be for the Prince Puma introduction on episode one, but it was so good that the people in charge insisted they retape every other vignette they had done to make it more that cinematic style. That cinematic style costs quite a bit more. DeJospeh gave credit to their backstage director and Dario Cueto for helping get the good acting performances out of the luchadors.

In an IWRG vignette (???), it looks like Apolo Estrada Jr. has joined up with Eterno’s rebellion. Everyone scurrying when Black Terry appears is hilarious. That sets up tonight’s IWRG FILL show, with Terry, Dragon Celestial and Aeroman taking on Aramis, Atomic Star and Eterno in the main event. The midweek show next week is a Lucha Libre Boom show, so whatever happens here will probably have to hold over for a little while.

La Parka explains Sunday’s Verano de Escandalo main event is all about revenge for him: he blames Mesias for costing him the chance to win his Lucha World Cup elimination match and participate in the event. This something I wish they would’ve done more with – or had more time to do with – in the lead up to the Lucha World Cup. Not making the World Cup is a big deal, but there weren’t any sort of reactions for missing out by the people who lost their chance to make the LWC.

AAA also announced a sponsorship deal with Roshfrans Oil, a high performance oil company in Mexico. Roshfrans appears to have been on a sponsor on an F1 team and with the Mexico National Soccer team.

Octagon lost his mind yesterday afternoon, under the impression that AAA was creating a new Amenaza Elegante. That’s Octagon’s original ring name. It turns out what Octagon actually saw was just a photoshop of an Veracruz indy luchador, who’s obviously a big fan of Octagon and is using a look similar to his idol. AAA has nothing do with it, someone just stuck their logo on the indy guy’s picture and the indy guy liked it.

Lineups

CMLL (TUE) 06/16/2015 Arena México
1) Aéreo & Angelito vs Mercurio & Pequeño Universo 2000
2) Oro Jr., Pegasso, Soberano Jr. vs Cancerbero, Raziel, Sangre Azteca
3) Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Boby Zavala [En Busca de un Idolo]
4) Delta vs Canelo Casas [En Busca de un Idolo]
5) Blue Panther, Fuego, The Panther vs Ephesto, Mephisto, Virus
6) Dragon Lee, Mistico, Titán vs Kamaitachi, Pólvora, Ripper

Maya & Delta exchange opponents. Zavala & Maya could be the best match in this tournament.

Main event is a rematch. The stream hasn’t been working well for the opener much, but it’d be nice if it worked here.

ChilangaMask (SUN) 06/21/2015 Coliseo Coacalco, Coacalco, Estado de México
1) King Star & Nahual vs Chacal & Príncipe Azteca
2) Astro Rey Jr. © vs Fulgor I, Psycho Kid [EDM WELTER]
first defense
3) Arez, Belial, Impulso vs Alas de Acero, Aramis, Iron Kid
4) Súper Muñeco & Súper Pinocho vs Leo & Teelo
5) Keira vs ?
6) Caifan vs Virus
7) Hechicero vs Pagano
8) Black Terry, Negro Navarro, Solar I vs Avisman, Jeque, Judas el Traidor

Full card for next week’s show – Keira’s match and the title match seem like new additions. 6/8 (card order subject to change) figure to be mostly on the mat, which gives Pagano & Hechicero more reason to brawl around the arena. It’s a pretty varied card in styles.

One thought to “judges discover there’s no one good in this year’s En Busca de un Idolo, Lucha Underground preview”

  1. “Tirantes said Disturbio is one of three people he thinks should advance. ”

He didn’t say that. He say that out of the 8, 3 were low card guys for whom this was a golden opportunity, dunno if because they’re not tied into the higher ups in the backstage or something. Zavala might be another one, but he’s already won Gran Alternativa so this is not his “do or die” thing as it is for Disturbio (unless Tirantes is not aware or forgot of the GA thing)
