Rey Misterio Jr. not retiring, Mexican politicians have many ideas

Rey Misterio Jr. is not retiring. He said this repeatedly last night, including as part of the recording of MLW’s WaleMania event, saying he believes this is what Perro would’ve wanted him to do. (There’s a video clip here.) Rey indicated he’s very close to signing with Lucha Underground.

A Mexican senator has proposed dissolving all the lucha libre commissions and replacing them with oversight from department of fitness and sports to standardize everything on a national basis. That would displace most of the people who are currently in charge of lucha libre commissions, set a series of rules which would be applied everywhere (which might change/end extreme wrestling), and cover areas which don’t have active commissions. It would also seem to end up with either new people unfamiliar with lucha in charge, or those displaced commissioners just being brought back under a different umbrella.

Another pair of senators want a hospital that will focus on luchadors, boxers and MMA fighters. This is an idea that’s floated around for years; here, it’s said the concept was actually approved last year, but no funds were allocated to it and they’re hoping to change that.

Fuego en el Ring talks to indy promoters HUMO (Hugo Montemayor) and Fusion Ichiban (Giovani Frias) about the struggles about putting on shows. Both tend to promote in Mexico State, outside of Distrito Federal. Montemayor says most shows lack an ambulance or medics qualified for emergency treatment. He also notes it’s hard to sit out stars who show up in non-condition, because the wrestlers may not show up until during the event, and then the fans have been expecting the match for a while. Frias notes the legal requirements for promoting a show in Merida were different than in Mexico City and the need for consistency.

The next show in Auditorio de Tijuana is tonight, with Mistico, Mr. Niebla, Oriental versus Nicho, Damian, and Halloween as the main event. Halloween was part of the Thursday press conference, saying the show must go on but his trio would abandon plans for a Familia de Tijuana reunion to instead be Perros del Mal for one night. Tony Casanova, the wrestler who was said to suffer a back injury this past week, is off the card and replaced by Huichol.

Nicho, Halloween, and Rey Misterio Sr. expressed support for Rey Misterio Jr.

Rafael el Maya complains the referees today are under trained or not at all trained.

I’m big fan of Japanese wrestling blogger enuhito, and even more so after he got a sit down interview with Dorian Roldan. Most of the interview is occupied with corrected the mistakes in reporting on Perro Aguayo Jr.’s death – facts wrong, translation issues – wanted to make it clear Misterio had nothing to do with Perro’s death. (Dorian believes it was the impact on the apron which caused most of the damage.) In the Japanese version of the post, it turns out Dorian happened to already be in Japan, because he was meeting with Japanese wrestling offices on the 25th in 26th to bring in wrestlers for the Lucha World Cup trios tournament coming up in May. No groups are named.

On Voices of Wrestling, Rob Barry writes about five of his favorite Perro Aguayo Jr. matches.

  1. “proposed dissolving all the lucha libre commissions and replacing them with oversight from department of fitness and sports to standardize everything on a national basis. ”

Nothing will happen. Maybe they’ll change the name and then nothing will happen. The country is going in the opposite direction, national offices have been closed or de-powered and stuff is being carried out by state or local offices in several fields. There probably will be more involvement in some shows by the municipal authorities but eventually they’ll loose interest (and probably won’t bother with smaller shows).

One of the promoters said that they’re not in for profits, and that one of his mistakes is that he pays more attention to the matches than running the shows. The lucha higher ups will try very hard to keep money marks around, keeping the status quo.

Besides saying he ain’t retiring, Misterio also said he’ll be with AAA on the April 1st show to honor Aguayo. Most likely not wrestling, but they’ll probably start running angles heading for TM. They should be careful not to run any bad taste angles…
