Dragon Lee dart tope

recap

taped 2014-12-09 @ Arena México

Peloton press slam

Magnus, Metatrón, Star Jr. vs Artillero, Metálico, Súper Comando: [OK] First fall was the best fall. Star Jr. and Metalico didn’t work well together; Metalico’s got to get better with being a rudo for young técnicos if he’s going to work out in his current spot. Camouflage brothers didn’t get much to do but looked good when they got to do it. Magnus and his highlighter yellow outfit looked the best of the técnicos, though not as good as the blue tracksuit and pink shirt Alexis was wearing.

Fuego, Oro Jr., Soberano Jr. vs Arkángel de la Muerte, Disturbio, Kamaitachi: [OK] A two fall match in the record book, but the rudos still won an imagined middle fall. They just didn’t bother to get the pin (and didn’t have to take the 90 second break.) It wasn’t worked any differently for being two falls, just differently for being only about 11 minutes. That was fine given the finish. Fuego and Kamaitachi feuded without really interacting much, to the point where it’s tough to figure out if the feud would work because there’s so little of it here. Most of the match was worked like a segunda which happened to be a tercera. The dives were surprisingly because the match seemed tame before it. I don’t know what Soberano was up to with his springboard near the ramp on Arkangel, but I was disappointed when he slipped and had to do armdrag instead.

Blue Panther, Blue Panther Jr., The Panther vs Felino, Puma, Tiger: [OK] Very close to the match they did on the 12/06 GDL show, only with Felino in for Misterioso. The first fall end is exactly the same, and there were repeated spots elsewhere. The Guadalajara match was a lot snappier and there was more plain time killing here. Never sure if that’s editing or just a different way of working on a different day. This match didn’t have the intensity of the previous one at all. The Guadalajara one didn’t have Zacarias hanging out on the ramp the whole time, so there is that.

Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., La Sombra vs Bárbaro Cavernario, Euforia, Hechicero: [good] Another fun build up match to next week’s title match. Hechicero & Cavernario improved as a team, and Cavernario’s tricky missile dropkick was perfectly timed. They weaved Sombra’s Ingobernable-ness into the match without detracting it, but it still felt like it would’ve been better as a two on two match. The other guys were not bad but the energy was with the other two and I would’ve preferred them to get more time in a what was otherwise a short match.

Virus © vs Dragon Lee for the CMLL World Super Lightweight Championship: [GREAT] Yet another really strong Virus title defense, with this one feeling different than the others. Dragon Lee seemed to have Virus’ number for most of it. Virus matches with Maya and Fuego and Titan felt like the técnico was just holding on and hoping to pull out a win. Dragon Lee seemed to dictate the action in the first fall and large portions of the third; this wasn’t Virus eating a guy up on the mat like might have been expected and the match unfolded differently. Virus going after Dragon Lee’s right arm and later his leg to tear him down looked viscous, and Lee can sell the attack in the moment. (After the moment, less so.) The big moves looked great too, with Dragon Lee’s first tope being incredible and Lee somehow not destroying himself by landing on his knees after his tope con giro. The sequence with Dragon Lee’s targeted one foot kick to the head turned into legscissors would’ve been a great end (and it was nice tough for Virus to pull Lee’s arm back as he got close to the ropes), but all the stuff that came after it was worth seeing too. The Gori Special right before the finish looked brutal and the submissions after were just showing off. Dragon Lee did stumble a few times, especially in the first fall, but this was another great outing for Virus and a promising one for a young wrestler.
