recap

taped 2014-09-26 @ Arena México

Maya takes some time out to meet the fans

Mephisto vs Guerrero Maya Jr. in a CMLL La Copa Junior eightfinal: The back of Maya’s head almost hit the guardrail on his dive, which would’ve been very not good. Mephisto’s hand slapped Maya’s head as he tried to catch him, which didn’t seem like it helped. That was pretty much his match.

Shocker vs Misterioso Jr. in a CMLL La Copa Junior eightfinal: Misterioso had a Misterioso match for about 2 minutes and that was that.

Tiger tornillo

Volador Jr. vs Tiger in a CMLL La Copa Junior eightfinal: Volador & Tiger were rushing thru a theoretical normal lightning match. It looked like it would be good if they got 8 minutes (or 15 minutes for a title match, if Tiger ever got to challenge for a singles title.) Tiger might have lost, but he was even with Volador on superkicks and that’s like winning. Secret highlight of this match was Amapola putting over how powerful the backcracker is as a finisher.

highpoint of Mascara

La Máscara vs Felino in a CMLL La Copa Junior eightfinal: On the other side of the coin, this is definitely a match I wouldn’t want to see go 15 minutes and was fine with it going 100 seconds. Match peaked with the handshake fake out.

Mephisto vs Shocker in a CMLL La Copa Junior quarterfinal: Shocker: Announcers pretending Mephisto had been waiting all this time to avenge his father by beating up Shocker was amusing. He got revenge of a guy who wasn’t really playing técnico or rudo, but just doing moves. Shocker losing his charisma is the saddest part.

shotgun superkick

Volador Jr. vs La Máscara in a CMLL La Copa Junior quarterfinal: La Mascara’s final match was edited, but they left in the parts of him standing around and the crowd shots instead of actually showing the match. It’s almost like they’re not good at this. Mascara failed at taking off his pants, which works well if he’s the comedy heel I imagine him to be. (He’s probably not.) La Mascara repeating the same powerbomb with feet on the ropes spot from about four minutes ago is the most Generic CMLL move possible, which also fits La Mascara. Not sure why they went out of their way to protect La Mascara with the finish but whatever

Volador tope con giro

Mephisto vs Volador Jr. in a CMLL La Copa Junior semifinal: The block final seemed like a standard tournament match where one guy was going to get all the offense to set up him losing to one big move from the opposition, so the Valagueza about 3 minutes in worked as a really good near fall. This was the only match which got enough time to feel like a real match, but it went right back to being a Volador spot exhibition until Mephisto got his second big move, and that was that.

Atlantis, Máscara Dorada, Valiente vs Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas, Último Guerrero: [OK] A regular match with only a bit of Dorada/Valiente showing off and bunch of Ultimo Guerrero and Atlantis feuding. UG gets his win, a week late, and the rest is shorter than usual because this is the ninth match on the show. Dorada has been kind of lost since Místico went away, which is the weirdest possible outcome.

nice running start
