recap

taped 2014-08-19 @ Arena México

“this works as a highlight, he thought”

Molotov, Sensei, Star Jr. vs Canelo Casas, Guerrero Negro Jr., Hijo del Signo: [below average/ok] I’m not sure, but it appeared Tirantes allowed a Sensei to submit Negro when Sensei was doing a Tarantula submission hold in the ropes. That was dumb. No one cares. Replays didn’t think it counted and I’m inclined to believe them. Star Jr. looked good at times and got beat, most everyone else looked generic, this match didn’t really go long but felt very long.

Well aimed kick

Esfinge, Hombre Bala Jr., Súper Halcón Jr. vs Cancerbero, Nitro, Raziel: [OK] A Cancerbero match with Nitro playing the role of Virus; Virus has never looked better and he wasn’t even in the match. They worked hard, but it was hard to get into with the lack of crowd energy. Esfinge tried to be energetic, which at least fits with his partners double teams, but then failed at his first attempt at a submission hold. His comeback was nice. Nitro blew taking an armdrag and then celebrated it, so there’s that. I’m not sure why you would tope someone who is sitting on the floor, but Bala did it anyway. Super Raziel Driver isn’t worth doing as a (broken up) near fall in a random tercera on a Tuesday night (especially when the actual finish is happening one move away anyway.)

This doesn’t seem like the most effective way to attack a guy laying down, but whatever Hombre Bala
Raziel special. Raziel is special.
that moment where you’re hanging upside down, realizing you’ve failed, must be a terrible moment

Black Panther vs Arkangel de la Muerte: [OK] More early big spots than would be expected, with both guys getting in dives in the first four minutes and Arkangel dropping Black Panther with a superbomb in minute four which would’ve been a convincing finish. There’s an Isis distraction leading to a sit down powerbomb soon after which would’ve been a good finish too, but Panther instead wins the surprise armbar (that’s a surprise to the camera switcher.) The idea seemed to be that Arkangel had to go with big moves to put down Black Panther, which doesn’t quite fit with Black Panther being able to get the armbar out of nowhere. Still, more interesting than I thought it would be.

Volador cannon tope

Delta, Tritón, Valiente vs Pierroth, Puma, Tiger: [OK] a really long way to go for a crap finish, and one that wasn’t even clearly a foul because Tiger does the same sort of kick to the but often enough. This one was slightly better than it looked on paper, because Pierroth was kept to a minimum and didn’t really fowl anything up (which was totally expected on the Valiente monkey flips) unless I just fell asleep during the match and missed it. Other people possibly not paying attention include Delta, who decided to wear his yellow and black outfit against the rudo who only wears yellow and black. This was fine and better than fine at times but there’s no reason for the DQ finish.

not sure this works
Maximo has the best job sometimes

Marco Corleone, Máximo, Stuka Jr. vs Ephesto, Mephisto, Shocker: [OK] very by the numbers match; Máximo couldn’t even be bothered to put his mohawk up for this match. Having this match end in a foul too makes it dumber that the last one ended that way too. This was all built around Máximo going for the kiss, which didn’t happen this week. Shocker was at least funny only selling his foul when Tirantes was looking and strutting the rest of the time.

it only hurts when Tirantes is lookinga t him
