IWRG (SUN) 10/12/2014 Arena Naucalpan [The Gladiatores]

Guanajuato’s Septimo Dragon and Estado de Mexico made their debut.

911 faked a foul to get the second, so Rafy did the same in the third.

straight falls. Last fall saw Pantera & Cerbero have Lupus & X-Fly in submissions, but the referee rule that capitan Veneno gave up to Demon Clown first.

Negro’s first match here this year. Piratas took 1/3, when Hijo threw a beer in Dos’s face to set up Pirata Sr.’s win.

With Pirata Morgan Jr. involved, IWRG continues to increase the number of (kind of pointless) masks which could fall at Castle of Terror. I could see them stretching out the Demon Clown match until December. Ninja Turtles are here a couple weeks and they’re already doing screwy wins. Just winning is not creative enough.

Stewart Allen, who did English language announcing for CMLL, has passed away. The story goes CMLL sold a run of tapes to a company in France and Stewart and another announcer was brought in to do a new commentary track so it could be sold again elsewhere. (Stewart’s started with as Dave Bradshaw as his partner, then it was changed to Matty Deller later on.) It being CMLL, these tapes were months old, without any context and sometimes vastly out of sequence, so we talked a couples times as Stewart tried to track down airing dates and understand what was happening. He enjoyed calling CMLL and would’ve loved the chance to do it at a bigger level if CMLL had the forethought to run their own current English language broadcast. (He would’ve been great for TripleMania too.) Instead, the tapes eventually changed to an all Minis show, then dried up entirely. The shows still air on the Fight Network in Canada under the Fighting Spirit name (including tonight), but they haven’t had new material in many years. I’d still hear from him when his women’s wrestling podcast had a lucha libre related guest was on, and he did plenty of other types of wrestling. Stewart always struck me as a guy who loved wrestling and was happy to be part of it. He’d be in my neck of the globe when Shimmer would run shows, and I always thought about how I should go over there just to say hi and thanks. I regret that I never did. Stewart will be missed.

Willie Mack was released from NXT. He had just started with NXT. I have no idea how that works that quick, but Mack was a guy AAA and Lucha Underground were clearly interested in prior to him signing with NXT. It seems like 50/50 odds he’ll be picked up by the next batch of Lucha Underground tapings in January, especially if he’s headed back to Los Angeles anyway.

10/12 Stardom: Star Fire & Mystique b Miho Wakizawa & Koguma [Goddesses of Stardom] – this is a league tournament, with two blocks of four teams (so three matches each and a final.) Star Fire & Mystique start off 1-0.

Rudas took 2/3. Amapola submitted Estrellita for the win.

Rudos took 1/3 in a good match.
4) Astral © b Eléctrico [CMLL MINI]
Electrico grabbed Triton to be his second. Astral had Star Jr. as his second (but he showed up late.) Astral took falls 2/3 to keep the title in a great match, probably the best possible match between the two. Astral’s first defense.
5) Atlantis, Blue Panther, Super Porky b Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Vangellys
Tecnicos took 2/3
6) Diamante Azul, Marco Corleone, Máscara Dorada DQ Felino, Negro Casas, Shocker
Straight falls, Shocker fouling Azul in the second. Azul challenged Shocker to a (non-title) match next week.

Astral versus Electrico is worth going out of your way to see and the tercera was fun too. Women’s match wasn’t bad. Rest of the show was useless.

Mephisto won in a what was said to be a excellent 30 minute match (though the Twitter timestamps says it was c1oser to 20.) Ninth defense, third straight against Valiente.

Probably the same Mephisto/Valiente match they had in Arena Mexico, though it’s nice to think of them continually getting better at it.

Lucha Underground announced Blue Demon vs Chavo Guerrero Jr., Drago vs King Cuerno in a falls count anywhere match, and a world title match for the double taping on Saturday.

Black Terry Jr. has photos of the monthly show at the Toy Museum. Solar/Negro Navarro was said to be excellent by people who’ve seen a lot of them.

A Halloween Queretaro show includes a main event where a Porro will likely lose his hair and a Black Warrior sighting. Crazy Boy being here reminds me to bring up that Crazy Boy hasn’t been on AAA TV since this spring. With Joe Lider joining the Perros del Mal, the Mexican Powers are basically Nino Hambruguesa and no one else.

The Kriminal Boys are the sixth team added to the Cara Lucha tagteam tournament.

10/12 NOAH: Daisuke Harada (C) b Super Crazy [GHC JR] – 5th defense. Pesadilla’s team won on the undercard. Super Crazy and Pesadilla are still on the upcoming tour, even though it’s a heavyweight tag tournament.

10/12 Wrestle-1/TNA: Andy Wu & El Hijo Del Pantera b Jiro Kuroshio & Yusuke Kodama – this aired on the PPV and should turn in the usual places if you want to check in on Hijo del Pantera.

Shocker and Azul are still feuding.
5) Máximo b Mephisto [Copa Jr. VIP, Copa Jr., final]
Maximo took 2/3 to win the tournament. Money was thrown in. Brazo de Oro and Kahoz were the seconds. Maximo dedicated the win to his mother.
6) La Máscara, La Sombra, Rush b Euforia, Thunder, Último Guerrero
Ingobernables won in straight falls. Clean fall in the first, Rush sneaking in a foul on UG in the second.

Nice upset win for Maximo. This tournament still feels like something put on just to fill a few weeks of shows, but at least maybe they can get something out of down the road.

Main event looks like they’ve moved on to the Ingobernables against the Guerreros. They haven’t moved on from Shocker & Diamante Azul, despite all reason and logic.

Alberto el Patron was honored by the city of San Luis Potosi yesterday. The mayor talked about Alberto’s achievements in sports and being a role model for young people, Alberto noted it was his first visit back in 9 years and gave the mayor credit for making many positive changes. That sort of thing, and the best sort of local promotion for Sunday’s show. In a Q&A, Alberto said he plans on wrestling for “only three or four more years” so he can eventually spend more time with his family. It’s very rare a wrestler says something like that and sticks to it. Alberto might more set on that then most, but it’s something AAA has to find out for sure before they decide on how they’re booking the Perro/Alberto feud. Alberto was mobbed by fans coming/leaving the ceremony.

Rob has highlights from the 06/27/14 CMLL show, including the En Busca de un Idolo cibernetico.

CMLL’s text/video preview for the Dia Los Muertos suggest the shows will not be CMLL vs CMLL, but CMLL vs the Undead. That would be a different booking direction, so that doesn’t seem likely at all.

Impulso and Belial have been added to the CaraLucha tag team tournament. Three to go. Kriminal Boys are surely one.

SuperLuchas looks back at Dr. X on the third anniversary of his death, and Kcidis has a Dr. X drawing.

El Pancracio has a photo and a note from Cuchillo’s funeral: the body was cremated.
