Nove tope into the void

Súper Nova vs Eterno [NWA OLD LH] (03-02, IWRG) [OK]: This is the Super Nova as IWRG Top Tecnico period. Like all periods in IWRG, it started randomly and ended with no notice. First two falls are almost exclusively submission holds, the two luchadors imitating title match style even though it feels tremendously out of character for both of them. It was tough to be invested in the holds, which were easy to put on and ineffective; it felt more like a live action Book Of 1001 Lucha Submission holds than a match. (There was no normal build to it; they were very happy to show off what they really did know, but didn’t do it an entertaining fashion and it went a long time; this match was close to 25 minutes and needed to be 15.)They completely shifted syles in the third, working more a CMLL title match, though in a negative way – lots of spots, cover, pause, everyone comes back to life to do next big spot. Super Nova figuring out the key to blocking the Styles Clash is folding your arms was amusing, and his finish was good but otherwise this is skippable.

the finish
Lucero tope

Silver Star vs Charles Lucero for the WWA World Middleweight Championship (ACM, 03/02): [great]: Hard to believe these guys are in the same weight division! Lucero has a very particular way of going out of the ring (always looking like he’s taking the craziest bump to the floor but somehow landing on his feet)and a very particular way of catching dives (all his arms, lessening the impact.) Both guys seemed to be working 10-15 years younger than they looked, with lots of good rapid sequences, before hitting a wall about 11 minutes in. Action was still solid, but breathing was very heavy and match slowed down. I assume Lucero’s knee injury in the third was legit, because it was just so random otherwise. They picked it back up at the end and the finish was smooth enough that I decided to put it as great, though it’s close. I liked the sequences, Lucero’s senton was killer, and it felt competitive.

watch carefully, both guys get hurt on the missed dive

Mascara Dorada should pay more attention

Máscara Dorada, Mistico, Valiente vs Cavernario, Felino, Terrible for the CMLL World Trios Championship (Puebla, 03/03): [GOOD]: Didn’t feel a lot like a title match for the first two falls, just a normal main event. It turned into the standard Estetas third fall title match in the third. Rudos didn’t have a lot to do but strike and sell the tecnicos moves, but this is a good group for slapping people – Terrible does it well, and Vailente and Dorada go all out of them. This match was built a lot more around Terrible/Mistico than you’d think; he worked good most of the time for a guy who was thrust into this role with no Mr. Niebla, but didn’t handle the triple dive spot nearly as well as Kraneo. (There’s only one Kraneo.) Good enough TV match but there were better defenses in this reign.

Valiente topes Terrible off the screen
I have no idea

Black Terry, Dragón Celestial, Emperador Azteca, Fulgor, Imposible, Sky Ángel vs Aztlán, Cheyene Destino, Jorge Kebrada, Kanon, Skayde, Vortize [Copa High Power]: (IWRG, 03/12) – [OK/GOOD] I couldn’t figure out how I had the lineup for the match so wrong, and realized only after it was over that I thought I was watching match #3 in this feud when I thought it was match #1. Still little off, since a guy on team Skayde introduces himself as Destino and not Cheyene. (Looking back, The Gladiatores has the spot listed as Onix. It’s definitely a luchador.)

interesting sell!

Match was alright as the first match in a feud but less so as the last. There was way too much miscommunication between teams, more than is usually noticeable in even the first match in series like this. It wasn’t just the kids either, as Fulgor I and Skayde were on different pages for their mid match exchange. Pacing was a problem. They took a long time to get to the first elimination, started rapid firing thru them, stopped it for a long Jorge sequence, then started shedding people two at a time to catch back up. Couldn’t totally blame Jorge for slowing it down, because it seemed like the middle third of the match was reserved for just a couple on each side with others going about 10 minutes between ring time. Production tried to do elimination replays live and missed important action as a result (like Fulgor getting his mask pulled), but they were find at catching things live.

Sky Kid makes the most of the flip

The first third of this match was pretty good, culmination with the wave after wave of topes on the same side. It was IWRG guy after IWRG guy diving until Jorge decided to join in the fun. Skayde looked very fat, white’s not his color now, but he took big bumps near the end. Imposible and Sky Angel looked the best of the IWRG FILL guys and Kannon seemed the best of Skayde’s crew. Destino had some impressive moments, but also dressed like a guy who just bought his mask from a street vendor. I’m not high on Emperador Azteca but he also a had couple good moments here.
