CMLL on Fox Sports (Mexico): 2014-05-03

recap

taped 2014-04-25 @ Arena México

it actually got 3.

Atlantis, Máximo, Super Porky vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero: This first match only seems to exist to handle the time difference between the Fox Sports and Azteca America airings, and there’s definitely a better use of that time horribly edited 5 minutes matches (I think Gran Guerrero spent more time raising the roof than the first fall lasted.) An actual highlight package would be better than most of the matches, but they did do a lot to emphasis the Atlantis/UG issue here. It does seem like this should be a lot better if they spent a little more time producing it. Props to UG actually winning with his front superplex for once.

flips everywhere

Mistico, Titán, Volador Jr. vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora, Puma: An edited for time by the numbers match with these guys. There was a stacked up superplex here, it was that match. Puma was good and it was neat to see him beat Volador in a fall, but they missed something from this match and maybe Rey Escorpion would’ve provided it. Místico becoming Volador Jr.’s number one fan probably should’ve been explained at some point (besides the meta idea that everyone likes Volador so maybe they’ll like Místico if he likes Volador.)

Sombra double knee smash > Zeuxis double knee smash > Disturbio double knee smash

La Máscara, La Sombra, Rush vs Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas, Shocker: I think I was more excited for this concept before I actually saw it. It may still work, but it was not as interesting in practice to have team Sombra do nothing but brawl (and not be too interesting) and then bumble around for Team Niebla offense. Even if it did work, it’s odd to give them the new attitude right when they’re going to lose for a few weeks. Sombra’s group attacking Volador’s group was edited out, which would’ve done a lot to explain why the técnicos were acting like they were. Weird Shocker turned for essentially two months, since he’s effectively back to being a técnico here. Extremely weird baby edit in the second fall.

as seen in: every Super Halcon match

Súper Halcón Jr. vs Soberano Jr. in a En Busca de un Idolo match: Super Halcón Jr. has one lightning match. This does not normally seem to be a problem in CMLL, where figuring out one match you can repeat in every trios match seems to be encourages, but is pretty well exposed in this sort of situation. This is not to say just the system is broke, because Soberano has been in the same system for a while and looked much more dynamic in this match (and had the better tope con giro.) Halcón should at least be doing stuff ‘wrong’ at this point – the only bad idea for him is to keep doing what he’s already doing. Sadly, that seems to be his only idea.

and Soberano doing it a little bit better

mad scientist bomb

Hechicero vs Star Jr. in a En Busca de un Idolo match: Another destruction by Hechicero, being a little bit more evil while being a wrestling machine. He remained a good opponent for técnicos, helping Star Jr.. with a super impressive headscissors early on and catching him well on his tornillo dive. Hechicero’s crazy assortment of moves is enough to make him stand out, but he shows he can do more than that. Star Jr. may have improved his stock as much as anyone in this tournament.
