Volador joins the tecnicos but Invasors win ciberentico

CMLL (FRI) 11/29/2013 Arena Mexico [CMLL, Estrellas del Ring]
1) Artillero & Súper Comando b Hombre Bala Jr. & Súper Halcón Jr.
Rudos took 2/3
2) Astral, Eléctrico, Shockercito b Demus 3:16, Pequeño Olímpico, Pierrothito
Tecnicos took 2/3 in a disappointingly poor match.
3) Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto b Ángel de Oro, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr.
Rudos took 1/3.
4) Máximo b Niebla Roja [lightning]
Maximo defeated Niebla Roja with a kiss in 9 minutes.
5) Euforia, Tama Tonga, Último Guerrero b Atlantis, Diamante Azul, Shocker
Rudos took 2/3, UG defeating Atlantis with the Atlantida.
6) Psyco Ripper b Mr. Águila, Volador Jr., Mistico, Valiente, Máscara Dorada, Kráneo, La Máscara, Blue Panther, Morphosis [cibernetico]
Invasors vs CMLL. Order of elimination went Morphosis, Blue Panther, La Mascara, Kraneo, Mascara Dorada, Valiente, Mistico (via Volador La Mistica, again.) That left 3 Invasors – Volador, Aguila, Ripper – and it turned out to be a an elimination match to the final person (despite being billed as side versus side). Volador again shook Mistico’s hand after beating him, causing his partners to turn on him. Volador battled back against Ripper & Aguila, but was defeated. Ripper beat Aguila. After the match, Volador vowed to take Ripper’s mask. Invasors attacked him again, with the tecnicos returning to make the save.

Volador’s a tecnico going forward. Took a few less weeks than Dalys! I’m not sure this is a decision totally about Volador. The Estetas del Aire exist to pair Mistico with two guys the CMLL crowd will actually cheer in hopes to get the same for Mistico. Volador is even more cheered, so maybe the thought is his new (and totally inexplicable) respect for Mistico will help him even more. Their are problems with this approach. CMLL hasn’t come up with a reason for Volador to like Mistico, so this turn is coming off as a bit contrived. It also messes with Volador’s appeal. CMLL’s crowd embraced Volador in large part because he was positioned as the anti-Mistico, anti-establishment character and there’s nothing more establishment than becoming new Mistico’s best friend. This is going to test Volador’s appeal and I don’t know how the crowd is going to react.

Also, let’s not forget to notice Mr. Aguila of all the people got to win the cibernetico. Not the guy who’s being pushed as Volador’s new rival, the one who shows up for every big match in no condition. A strange way to book things. Correction: Ripper did win, I misread the result.

I wasn’t around to watch the Terra broadcast last night, but it was said to be not as good as hoped. There was also absolutely nothing of note for ongoing issues which might resolve soon (though they’re obviously keeping UG/Atlantis alive.) Leyenda de Plata was still being hyped as upcoming, but not upcoming this week.

Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas and Zacarias rode on the TuriLuchas tourist bus. Rey Bucanero returned – as a commentator. I didn’t see any update about how long he would be out.

A couple quick TV notes:

  • Lucha Azteca has been moved to 4pm CT. That seems like it’s a permanent change.
  • News magazine show “Tras la Verdad” on Univision has an episode about Boxing and Lucha Libre Sunday at noon CT.

Lineups

CMLL (FRI) 12/06/2013 Arena Mexico
1) Aéreo & Stukita vs Pequeño Nitro & Pequeño Olímpico
2) Fuego, Hombre Bala Jr., Súper Halcón Jr. vs Cancerbero, Hijo del Signo, Raziel
3) Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., Stuka Jr. vs Namajague, Shigeo Okumura, Virus
4) Titán vs Pólvora [lightning]
5) Diamante Azul, Rush, Super Porky vs Tama Tonga, Terrible, Último Guerrero
6) Mistico, Valiente, Volador Jr. vs Kráneo, Mr. Águila, Psyco Ripper

No sign of Rush versus Negro Casas for two straight weeks is a very bad sign for it happening this December. They’ve promised it twice now and then just not gotten around to it. CMLL seems just as likely to do Psyco Ripper versus Volador, though that seems way too soon. Last year, CMLL’s big year end match was just the Leyenda de Plata – that seems the most likely outcome this year, maybe with a Tama Tonga/Terrible vs Rush/La Mascara tag title rematch as the semimain. That would be a very disappointing way to the year and a sign the year end show shouldn’t be expected to mean anything in future years.

2/3/4 look good. Titan has all the lightning matches.

2) Emperador Azteca, Látigo, Seiya b Atomic Star, Electro Boy, Kalim Black
3) Imposible b Dragón Celestial [IWRG IC Light]
Impossible’s third defense. Best match of the night.
4) Hijo de Máscara Año 2000, Súper Nova, X-Fly b Golden Magic, Máscara Púrpura, Toscano
Mascara Purpura beat X-Fly with the shooting star press.
5) Alan Extreme & Veneno b Trauma I & Trauma II [IWRG IC TAG]
Match came down to Veneno surprising Trauma II with a cradle for the title changing win. Trauma II insisted he kicked out in time. Traumas fall on fourth defense.

I really didn’t expect Alan Extreme to end up tag team champion when he lost his mask – I didn’t expect when they announced this match! This is a big surprise title change.

AAA and the state government of Nayarit announced all tickets to Guerra de Titanes would be free. The state is picking up the bill, and this is a sold show for AAA. The Guerra de Titanes lineup makes a lot more sense in this context – it’s not as interesting to those who closely follow the promotion, but if the local government will pay for all the tickets for a show if you bring in Demon and a foreigner, then give them the show they want and save the bigger ticket selling matches for shows where they actually have to sell tickets. The card could have been switched around to be more interesting, but it appears to be good enough for the only people who matter.

Psyco Ripper is quoted as saying the Invasors still want to be friends with Volador, but he should admit all his success is due their help. (In reality, the Invasors were drifting aimlessly until Volador was put with them.) Their cibernetico veruss the tecnicos is the most interesting match on the card, and still does not appear to have anything to do with the announced Leyenda de Plata tournament. That match won’t air until next week, but all four matches airing tonight on Terra have chances to be good.

Perro Aguayo Jr. declares he is the one who pulls the strings in lucha libre, so Daga & Psicosis betraying him came as no surprise and he’s got a new group of Perros del Mal ready to debut soon. He predicts Daga & Psicosis’ careers will nosedive without being allied with him. As for his new allies, Perro is not at all worried about his brother Konnan turning on him, and feels Cibernetico and Mesias are teaming with him because they know they need help against La Secta and wouldn’t be relevant on his own. You can see the video version of this interview here.

Arena Coliseo is closed for the year. CMLL announced their now regular closure of their winter older arena due to congestion from other activities from the arena. (Everyone says the Coliseo is in a bad neighborhood, so always wonder if this also has to do with not sending tourists out out in questionable surroundings when it gets dark very early.) CMLL will resume shows in Arena Coliseo on January 19th and will offer children’s tickets (sixth row and back) to Arena Mexico for 10 pesos for the month of December.

This week’s Tercera Caida had an interview with Los Piratas.

Is anyone taping the AAA Regional show off the Tijuana affiliate? I’m looking for that affiliate, and the episode from three weeks ago specifically – that station apparently mixed parts of different episodes into one airing weirdly.

11/29 NJPW: La Sombra [O] & Naito b Karl Anderson [X] & Doc Gallows  [World Tag League]Hooray, Sombra won and even got the pinfall himself over someone good. (Anderson has historically had many problems with Mexicans.) They have 2 points, like a whole bunch of teams, and made fun of themselves for taking so long to finally win a match in the post match interview.

11/29 WNC: Tajiri b Hijo del Pantera [WNC CHAMP]
Third defense for Taijiri. Hijo del Pantera teams with his father on the next WNC show (12/06) against a team TBA.

Terra Friday: Maximo vs Niebla Roja, return of Demus, Gen2011 vs Peleton del Terror

DTU anniversary main event, AAA TV, Fulgor vs Fulgor

DTU says they’ll have a six way mask/hair match for their 12/21 anniversary show. X-Fly, Ciclope and Ovett are announced as being in the match. X-Fly is already in a hair match this Sunday in IWRG, which probably means he’s not losing in IWRG. Looks like there’s also a bonus sort-of-DTU show on 12/01 in Arena Azteca Budokan, the one day Joey Ryan and Roderick Strong hadn’t been announced for a show yet during their trip.

AAA posted this week’s UTDN show already. They aired the first three matches from Queretaro.

ChilangaMask announced Fulgor I vs Fulgor II and La Heroina vs Chile’s Stephanie Vaquer. The Battle of the Fulgors sounds great, and I thought Heroina was promising in the one IWRG mixed tag of hers I watched while editing things.

6) Cerebro Maligno vs Leviatham [AULL LH]
Cerbero Maligno is champion. First defense.

Main event is listed for the middleweight title, but Cerebro Maligno is light heavyweight champion so I’m assuming they meant that. Four way trios match should be interesting.

Segunda sounds fun if it turns up on 52MX.

AAA says this week’s show on GalaTV will be two hours. Not sure if they’ll be airing the missing show from last week and this week’s normal show, or if it’ll just be this week’s UTDN show. It does seem like a make up for last week, which is a good sign for AAA.

Cibernetico relates to Perro about ungrateful goons turning on him, believes they’re the best team in the world, and doesn’t trust Konnan because “Konnan wants nothing good for anyone.”

Pierrothito says he’s sad about losing the Mexican lightweight championship. He explains CMLL stripped him of the title because they didn’t know when he would return or if he would return. (Why this would be is not mentioned.) Pierrothito does not blame Electrico for the situation but feels he should get a shot at the title.

ChilangaMask has added Fulgor 1 versus Fulgor 2 to December’s show. If Fulgor 2 wins, shouldn’t he get to be #1?

11/26 NJPW: Tenzan & Kojima [O] b Naito & Sombra [X] [World Tag League]
Naito & Sombra fall to 0-2. I have strong and definite feelings about Sombra going to Japan to take all the losses for Naito, but perhaps this is setting up the late comeback often done in this tournaments. Perhaps.

The CMLL recap also mentioned Mije hurt his shoulder in the Puebla match.

El Hijo del Santo announced he would be suspend his lucha libre career due a spinal injury. The injury is between his fifth and sixth vertebra. There’s a concern of paralysis if it’s not taken fixed, but there doesn’t seem to be any hurry if he stays out of the ring – Santo said he wouldn’t even be having the surgery until February or March. Santo says he’s been dealing with a tingling sensation since September. There is no specific amount of time he will be about; Santo said six or seven months at points in the press conference, but it could be as long as all of 2014. It appears the recovery will take 6-7 months, but Santo waiting to actually have it means that return date is pushed back  pretty far. The exact return date will be a determination by his doctor. Santo made it clear this was not meant to be a retirement and he plans on returning, but will not return if the doctors say he’s at risk for being paralysis.

Santo’s wife is quoted as saying the surgery is the same one the NFL’s Peyton Manning had, which was a neck fusion. The operation itself does not take long, but the recovery takes a while. That article on Manning says patients necks are usually better off after the surgery, though Manning himself had unexpected muscle issues which delayed his recovery. It read as though Santo will most likely be able to return.

There was no attempt to build a feud off this rivalry (which is actually surprising since they did the martinete angle just this summer.) The TxT show this weekend was barely covered – they’ll just be taking Santo out of the main event and making it a three way. All other Santo matches will be “suspended or canceled”, though Santo plans on still appearing on the shows. Santo did say one of the reasons he’s just not retiring is he would like to team with his son, since he was unable to team with his father. Santo even goes as far to say he would only wrestle teaming with his son in 0ne quote. (He says at other points he wanted to wrestle for 40 years.) Santo said the injury was from all the years of wrestling, but said his doctors told him the chair shots to the back were specifically a problem. Santo says his WBC championship is “suspended” unless the WBC decides differently.

Sunday’s Arena Coliseo show is moved to Arena Mexico. Announcers didn’t seem to be sure where were it would be last week and CMLL seems to have changed their mind. That means it’s Titan vs Averno & the ringside barrier.

A Fuego en el Ring article says only 8 luchadoras attended the Stardom tryout, with some others specifically discouraged from trying out by their bosses. Stardom is expected to bring three to Japan, probably from Star Fire, Mystique, Baby Star and Keira, who were the four also on the connected Dos Caras retirement show. It was probably always going to be from that group – why would they already be booked for the show if they weren’t thought to be the best – but those kind of tryouts are probably more useful in instruction and networking as they are actually “winning” the competition.
