Tanahashi vs Atlantis, Voladors beats Sombra again, IWRG & CMLL back together?, Voltaje Negro

Hooligan’s new mask/via Terra

CMLL (SUN) 08/25/2013 Arena Coliseo [CMLL]
1) Oro Jr. & Robin b Espanto Jr. & Guerrero Negro Jr.
2) Hijo del Signo, Hooligan, Nitro b Metálico, Molotov, Starman
Rudos took 2/3. Hooligan had a crazy mask, even for him. Metalico & Signo did interact and their feud was brought up in the post match, but it was not played up in the match itself.
3) Estrellita, Luna Mágica, Marcela DQ Amapola, Princesa Blanca, Princesa Sugheit
Tecnicas took 1/3, the last for excessive violence (Sugheit pulling Estrellita’s hair for too long of a time)
4) Shigeo Okumura b Fuego [lightning]
Okumura won in 6:06 via brainbuster.
5) Blue Panther, Diamante Azul, Super Porky b Euforia, Felino, Taichi
Tecnicos took 1/3. Felino failed on a body slam on Porky in the first and was flattened for the pinfall. Porky landed the plancha on all the rudos in the third.
6) Hiroshi Tanahashi, Pierroth, Terrible b Atlantis, La Máscara, Máximo
Rudos took 1/3. Tanahashi blatantly fouled Atlantis behind the refs back and cradled him for the win. Atlantis demanded a singles match and Tanahashi accepted in Spanish (after attacking Atlantis again.)

Terra had stream problems during the first match (no recording unless they put it up themselves) but settled down after that. Not a memorable show.

Tanahashi versus Atlantis seems like a match which ought to be on the special Monday Arena Mexico show on 09/16, but Tanahashi will be long back in NJPW but that point. Tanahashi is scheduled to wrap up on 09/08, which might be the date.

CMLL (SUN) 08/25/2013 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [@acogdl]
1) El Piraña & Samael b El Brillante & El Yaki
Yaki replaced Captain. Tecnicos took 2/3, Yaki turning on his partner in the end.
2) Demonio Rojo, Ráfaga, Sádico b El Divino, El Hippie I, El Hippie II
Rafaga replaced Evola. Rudos took 2/3, Rojo sneaking in a foul on Hippie Tony Escobedo thanks to Demonio Maya showing up.
3) Demonio Maya & Exterminador b Esfinge & Sky Kid
Rudos took 2/3, Exterminador pulling Sky Kid’s mask and beating him.
4) Sagrado, Stuka Jr., Súper Popular b Bárbaro Cavernario, Puma, Tiger
Tencicos took 2/3, Popular beating Barbaro in the third.
5) Volador Jr. b La Sombra
Barbaro Cavernario, second of Volador, distracted the referee to set up a Volador foul for the win.

Lots of rudos getting away with cheating. No one’s going back to Japan here, so probably a big multiman apuesta match on around 09/16.

Arena Naucalpan/IWRG announced CMLL returns to the arena on 09/22. CMLL and IWRG had a long partnership end in December 2007 after IWRG brought in Hijo del Santo for a single show. This was one of CMLL’s epic bits of holding a grudge. It seemed to be one between CMLL executives and IWRG but not held by the luchadors, with the veterans wanting to work with each other and plenty of CMLL trainees working in IWRG before they got regular spots in their home promotions. Perhaps the recent interaction between guys (like with Blue Panther anniversary match) thawed some ice.

AAA took over the deal with IWRG a few years ago, though the status of that agreement is unknown – AAA is running TV there this Friday (making the time of this announcement very interesting) and AAA luchadors are expected to work the RCH in a couple weeks, but there’s been much less AAA involvement on the regular AAA shows. It has allowed some of the younger IWRG wrestlers to get more of the spotlight, which hopefully continues no matter who IWRG is bringing in.

El Barrio Antiguo has a long and good article about Voltaje Negro, the Monterrey luchador jailed for a gang attack on casino (which left 42 dead.) It turns in a large exploration of lucha libre and life in Monterrey today.

The guys at DVDVR have finished their Lucha Libre Best of the 80s DVD set. It’s a 100 matches for $30, though they’re also looking for people to discuss and rank the matches after checking them out. There’s a podcast discussing the choices and surprises they found putting together the set here.

The full card for the IWL anniversary show is here; the Justin Credible vs LA Park vs Dr. Wagner vs Canek is for the vacant/never given out IWL Heavyweight championship. I’ll wait to be able to make out the full card later, but there does appear to be a billion people on the show.

Bill has highlights of 07/28/13 CMLL.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

Lucha Libre in Japan

08/24 REINA: Zeuxis & Vaquerita advanced to the finals of their tag team tournament, while Lady Storm (Chik Tormenta) upset Dump Matsumoto in the main event. She might have had a little help with that one.

08/25 AJPW: Kotaro Suzuki & Atsushi Aoki [O] b Drago & Argenis [X] [ALL ASIA TAG]
3rd defense. So much for the AAA upset. Drago’s supposed to be back in action as soon as Saturday.

08/25 STARDOM: Dark Angel b Kairi Hojo [STARDOM 5STAR GP]
Dark Angel starts of the league tournament with a win. Next show is 09/01.
