recap

taped 2013-02-26 @ Arena Mexico

quad dive (which needed a better camera angle)

Génesis & Robin vs Camorra & Guerrero Negro Jr.: an opener! Not as error prone as some, but boring as many. Genesis may be skinnier than Soberano. Guerrero Negro’s new Rey Escorpion cosplay outfit was the most interesting part of the match. He’s going to need more than the outfit.

early Akuma career highlight

Cancerbero, Raziel, Virus vs Arkángel de la Muerte, Nitro, Skándalo: It’s been a while, but I think I liked this better than the last time the feud came up; more action, less reliant on Skándalo doing the same moves in different positions. It was excellent every time Virus and someone got into a chop fight, they really ought to have done more of that. This feud doesn’t seem to be progressing at all, so we’ll see how they do again in three months, though both sides could use some new blood.

Herodes Jr., professional weirdo

Camaleón vs Stigma, Soberano Jr., Höruz, Hombre Bala Jr., Akuma, Espanto Jr., Herodes Jr., Cholo, Bobby Zavala [Sangre Nueva, tournament semifinal match]: So frustrating. I really wanted to like this match and really did for most of the way thru, thanks to parts like Flyin’ Cholo. Soberano had a strong match and Hombre Bala showed signs of possibly being a good rudo one day if that comes up. The last fourth of the match would’ve been fun in a different context. It just was so illogical, so nonsense, it killed the whole match for me. There was no reason for the técnicos to be fighting at all while there still was a person left on the other team, and no one came up with one. They all just wanted to do spots. That’s not wrestling, that’s not lucha libre, that’s something else. Maybe that something else is good, but what was the good lucha libre match I was watching became something else and I was very frustrated watching it.

Soberano stealing his dad’s move

This is the kind of match a promotion like CMLL would look down on an indy promotion for doing, and it was happening in Arena Mexico. (I’m not even directly blaming the guys involved; I don’t think the Sangre Nueva guys get to layout their matches without someone of age saying ‘yep, that’s a good idea’. That person is wrong.) The crowd was thrilled at the end and during the match (though they definitely died down when the técnicos start fighting early), maybe you’ll like it too and this is a good reminder people care about these matches in different ways than I do. I understand there are good things here, it’s just too dumb for me.

Diamante Azul, Super Porky, Valiente vs Kráneo, Morphosis, Psicosis: A by the numbers Porky comedy match. This was fine for what it was, but didn’t feel like a main event in any way. Azul was toned down in this match, mostly because of what this match was, but some because he just wasn’t in all that much. CMLL might as well just let Morphosis call himself Histeria if he’s going to be Histeria in every other way.
