La Máscara vs Rey Escorpión for the Mexican National Light Heavyweight Championship: A Mascara title match. Escorpion did all the stuff he could, but he is not really Averno (but who is). They didn’t have an interesting first fall and the third fall lagged when they were doing the usual CMLL title match spots, but it was not the move rest move bit as seen in previous years, it had a better flow. There were hints of a more brawling match, and the missed topes spot was good, but it’s nothing I need to see again.

La Máscara vs Averno, mask vs mask: other Mascara vs Averno singles matches they had during this stretch were about as good, but this one was tremendously helped by a rabid crowd. It was the same CMLL standard match underneath, lots of near falls with long pauses in between, a lot of dives, and a cavernaria spot. All those breaks and stop/starts work a lot better when there’s 7,000 people chanting for La Mascara and another 7,000 singing the rudo song. I’ve preferred great matches taking place in Arena Coliseo of late because this sort of reaction doesn’t happen in Arena Mexico as much any more. It’s still the best when they can get it, and they got it here. The match itself was really well executed with a strong finish.
There are very small things I could pick at (the super Devil’s Wings was too soon and the crowd knew the match couldn’t end for a while after unless something else as big happened) but this was a really solid match. Definitely worth checking out even if (like me) you’ve seen all the other singles matches from this feud.

Valiente vs Pólvora for the Mexican National Welterweight Championship: Not as much rushed as really clipped, though even the end could use a couple minutes. Actually, when I saw I had a 10 minute file of Pólvora vs Valiente sitting around, I presumed it was a lightning match and not a title match, and it quite nearly was. I still can’t believe Polvora won. This was better than many of 2012 Pólvora matches! Actually, now that I think about it, every Polvora title match was good, despite most of the other matches (singles included) being very not good. How did that happen?

Rey Cometa, Sagrado, Stuka Jr. vs Misterioso Jr., Puma King, Virus: Good match! Puma King vs Rey Cometa was the slight focus but everyone got their moments. The other four guys have worked against each other for hat seems like forever at this point. Virus was really smooth, Misterioso was his usual self, Sagrado had a good day and Stuka was solid as usual.
