Fabi Apache, Fenix, Octagoncito, Pimpinela Escarlata vs Dark Dragon, Mini Charly Manson, Sexy Star, Yuriko : This match had it’s ups and downs; there were really good parts, and there were parts where they where it felt like they must’ve been fighting in a phone booth by the way they were falling over each other. And that doesn’t even consider how much they were nailing each other; maybe everyone was just too fired up to be in front of such a big crowd? This was entertaining, though I think the same crew might have a smoothier match on another day. Fenix probably got over the best of the crew the fans weren’t used to, though Sexi Star might have been the real hero of the match for taking that Fenix kick and continuing.
Electroshock & LA Park vs Jeff Jarrett & Kurt Angle seconds hair: Match was proof that if you have a Mexican team beat a Foreigner team in a big show environment, crowd will go nuts no matter the quality of this match. This was a low quality match; the story was simple enough to follow, but it was a bad allocation of talent. Kurt Angle could’ve been any random TNA guy for the way he was used here. He also could’ve been any AAA guys, and then he wouldn’t have been as confused.
They built the match up to the hot tag, which got no reaction for the billionth, and the crowd exploded when Park actually got to hit the rudos, because that’s the spot they know to pop for. Why fight that on the biggest show of the year? Everyone single Jeff Jarrett match is like this. He appears to be great at riling up at the live crowd, though I am just assuming because they shied away (or screwed up) from actually showing most of the crowd reaction. The matches themselves are tedious and frustrating; even with a half speed Kurt Angle, this shouldn’t have been 10 minutes of Electroshock being held in the ring while people were doing more interesting things outside.
This was an absurd allocation of talent; the only way the last minute of the match makes sense is if Electroshock is on the road to becoming the great new star of the promotion. I’d prefer it not to make sense. It’s illogical that a feud that’s supposedly built around LA Park vs Jeff Jarrett played so little into the match. They came off as the third most important thing, to Electroshock superman and Joaquin vs Dorian.
Cien Caras vs Konnan vs Perro Aguayo Sr. for the Rio Nilo Cup: good brawl, especially given the time period and who was involved. It was a different kind of brawl than is done today; the rolling out of the ring spot came off as hokey as anything that might be today, but Cien fought both aggressively and desperately at times. It wasn’t clean looking offense, but it came off as more real – more so than the MMA?/UWF? spots Konnan was doing early, which looked right but lacked impact. It was still very AAA, with rules that sort of made sense and a finish that would only go that way with a rudo involved. This one would’ve been better to show months ago, given how much this year’s TripleMania plays off the bottle finish here (and it was a dozen times better here, obviously.)
