Warrior a rudo, Escorpion a poor teammate, Lady Apache vs Dark Angel?

CMLL (FRI) 06/08/2012 Arena Mexico [CMLLKaiser Sports]
1) Bengala & Leono b Apocalipsis & Cholo
Bengala replaced Robin. Tecnicos took 2/3.
2) Demus 3:16, Pequeño Violencia, Pierrothito b Eléctrico, Pequeño Halcón, Último Dragoncito
Pierrothtio & Violencia were in Boricua gear, and won by defeating Electrico and Halcon respectively.
3) Dark Angel DQ EstrellitaMarcelaLady ApacheDalis la CaribeñaLuna MágicaLady AfroditaAmapolaTiffanyLa Seductora [cibernetico]
Battle royal set the sides as Marcels, Estrellita, Dark Angel, Luna Magica, Seductora vs Amapola, Tiffany, Dalis, Lady Apache and Lady Afrodita. Eliminations went Afrodita (by Seductora), Luna (Dalis), Seductora (Tiffany), Dalis (Estrellita), Tiffany (Marcela), Marcela and Amapola went to a draw (of course) and Lady Apache was DQed for pulling Dark Angel’s hair too much. Apache & Angel were wearing matching gear, but Lady Apache showed some unusual rudo tendencies leading ot the finish. Apache and Angel challenged each other after teh match.
4) Euforia b Diamante [En Busca de un Idolo] VideosOficialesCMLL
After last week’s Tony Salazar related interference, Ultimo Guerrero worked Euforia’s corner and Diamante had both Atlantis & Franco Colombo in his corner. Euforia won with a knee bar in about 6:30. Euforia got a 36 from the judges. Diamante scored 30.
5) Dragon Lee b Titán [En Busca de un Idolo] VideosOficialesCMLL
Dragon Lee beat Titan via leaping armscissors. Dragon Lee got 35 points, Titan earned 37 from the judges.
6) Mr. Águila, Psicosis, Volador Jr. b Atlantis, Black Warrior, Delta
Black Warrior got sick of his partner’s mistakes and turned on them both. The rudos happily welcomed Warrior back home to the rudo side, and Warrior took Atlantis’ and Delta’s masks.
7) Rey Escorpion, Último Guerrero, Yujiro b Marco Corleone, Máximo, Rush
Rudos won, but Escorpion stole the pin on Rush when UG had him finished. Guerrero was not amused, but Escorpion walked off before they could talk.

Black Warrior had said the hair match would be his last as a tecnico. Guess Atlantis & Delta should’ve paid attention! This show, with three happenings besides the tournament, seems like the new programming configuration starting to exert it’s influence. It’s as if the old crew had everything to Rey Escorpion vs Black Warrior figured out and this was the real start of the new crew (though the Sangre Azteca stuff feels as much as someone getting a clean slate as Black Warrior here.) It’s unlikely there will be three angles on every show, but there’s clearly some shuffling going on and this is just the beginning of it.

Then again, this is about the third time Rey Escorpion and Ultimo Guerrero have had problems with each other in the year that they’ve been friends. It’s kind of their deal. And everyone likes to beat Rush, you can’t really get on Rey Escorpion too much for that.

Lady Apache and Dark Angel’s random feud continues to point towards a women’s cage match. Apache on the ruda side would be a first for her as far as I can find. The ruda side is much more loaded the tecnicas already, move Apache would skew things more. It doesn’t feel as much a problem on the men’s side, but Warrior & Sangre moving over probably means Polvora & Virus will be moving down a little bit.

Everyone in this round of En Busca de Un Idolo has 1 win and 1 loss. The point totals are a different thing

133 Titan
107 Euforia
101 Dragon Lee
88 Diamante

That’s before the final poll results, which approximately mirror last week’s numbers and should at least maintain Titan’s lead. Next week’s matches are Titan vs Diamante and Euforia vs Dragon Lee. Even Titan lost, he’d still get thru, and Euforia vs Dragon Lee match is essentially an elimination match, with Euforia sneaking thru on a draw right now due to his polling numbers. Still no sign of Mystery Rudo Trainer, perhaps that’s being saved for the final.

LuchaWorld has Mephisto, Mike Segura, Pierrothito, Texano, and Stuka in top 100.

Lucha Libre in Japan

NJPW 06/09: Angel de Oro did not wrestle, but finished in a five way tie for 3rd after the final day of league play. Putting it in some context..

2012 BOSJ: 3rd (of 9) – Angel de Oro
2011 G1: 7th (of 9) – La Sombra
2011 BOSJ: 5th (of 9) – Mascara Dorada
2010 BOSJ: 6th (of 8) – La Sombra
2006 BOSJ: 6th (of 7) – Sangre Azteca and Fuego (Durango Kid)

You have to go back to Black Tiger III’s 3rd place finish in 2012 (with few competitors) to find a better finish.

Both CMLL teams lost in the first round (semifinals) of today’s REINA Tag Team tournament, the debut show for the renamed REINA X World promotion.

I’m not sure what Mima Shimoda’s status is right now; she went to Japan with the group of luchadoras currently working the REINA shows, then they stripped her of the tag titles when whatever went down with Hotta, and I haven’t seen here mentioned there or in Mexico since. That sequence usually indicates someone quit, but it’d be odd for her to give up her CMLL spot over a part time gig in Japan. Not impossible, just odd.

  1. AYM was the same rerun as the last few weeks

52MX is airing 3/5/6 – some network out there is getting these lighting matches from Tuesday and Sunday, I’m sure, but we may never know since CMLL won’t actually promote it.

  2. I wonder if they can hold off on the women’s stip until Triplemania weekend, when CMLL will most definitely run a big Friday show?

Seems like CMLL on Televisa is three blocks/segments, down from four, so that could mean more 2 match shows in the future.

It’s stupid not to air lightning matches. They’re great for television and something different than all the tag matches.

  3. @thecubsfan: I don’t think so. I think the lightning matches are part of the behind the scenes changes. The new formula seems to be booking the extra 2 wrestlers per show and doing shorter matches but not making the cards any longer which is why two falls seems to be so prevalent lately. They are doing the same # of falls on these longer shows than they were back when they did shows with only 5 matches.

Just seems like CMLL is delaying the inevitable switch to a 1 fall format.

  4. @Rob:

Problem with 1 fall matches is you’ll get more and more screwjob finishes. It will create an environment like AAA/WWE/TNA where guys don’t want to do a clean finish. Sure, CMLL has it’s ref bumps and low blows, but they still have more clean finishes than any major wrestling promotion. 1 fall format could kill it when the egos and paranoia of doing a clean job take over.

1 fall format is superior for television editing purposes,

If I was in charge, I would make all minis and women’s matches 1 fall right now, unless it’s stip or title, and keep everything else the same.

  5. @LLL: I get that but I think it’s a neccessary evil. At this point 2/3 falls makes no sense when the CMLL format sheets are set the way they are. Wrestlers are specifically told before they go out they have 6 minutes to do the first fall, 4 minutes to do the 2nd fall and 5 minutes to do the third fall. Refs give them their time cues and tell them if they need to speed things up. If you go over early, you have to rush in the third fall. It’s so robotic. It’s the worst in title/stip matches when they do the short first two falls just to make sure they can do the long third fall. Just kills the atmosphere since everyone knows how the match is going.

I agree with the mini’s/women matches being only one fall and would extend that to title matches as well. Maybe even go the old CMLL Puebla route and make all pointless opening tag matches one fall only.

  6. Why hasn’t Dark Angel been given a run with the CMLL Women’s Championship?

  7. @Rob: I don’t think the lightning matches are part of the change, but I do think the 52MX show would be easier to produce if they’d air the lightning match then airing (and editing down) a third 3 fall match, even though the matches are shorter.

  8. @ChuckieChk: she’s over without a title, they have other office favorites. When Dark Angel was most over, CMLL seemed reluctant to give foreigners titles. She’s been around less just as they’ve had more titles around, and she doesn’t work REINA.

  9. @Rob: A few weeks ago CMLL aired the opener on Televisa and I remember complaining how that match needed to be one fall. I would say opener, women, lightning and minis should all be one fall for sure.

Do you think the current format of having equal length falls is for the Fox Sports show? It’s easier for everyone when it’s booked like that.

  10. Lady Apache should go to AAA. Way too many women in CMLL these days. Fabi/Lady vs Sexy Star/Mari could work.

Tonight’s Semi main on C3 was pretty good. Lots of flying from the tecnicos and it’s always nice to see non comedy Felino make a rare appearance.

  11. @LLL: I don’t think they take the # of falls into consideration for television purposes. Take last week for example – Fox had 2 matches, the first went two falls and the main event was three falls. But they are scheduled to take a certain # of breaks so they just added a second commercial break to the third fall of the main event to make up for the missed one in the first match. If CMLL were planning the live shows around TV they’d have aired the mini’s match first since it went three falls and had the straight fall women’s match on Galavision.

I think the # of falls is just for the live format sheet. For example that above show had 16 falls live. That’s with 7 matches, 1 lightning match. The previous Friday? Also, 16 falls. That’s with 7 matches, 2 lightning matches. Last night’s Arena Mexico show had 7 matches, 2 lightning matches. Want to guess how many falls the entire night? You know it – 16. Same # on the 5/4 & 5/11 tapings.

We can even put this theory to the test next week. 7 matches, 2 lightning matches. So two matches will go only 2 falls. Probably the ladies and the main event. It’s very monotonous but that’s typical of CMLL. Honestly I doubt many people (if any?) noticed this trend beyond way hardcore dudes like myself.

I haven’t been following the Sunday shows as closely but I would assume there is a trend there as well since they added the lightning matches.
