9) Imposible & X-Fly b Centvrión & Negro Navarro [final, El Protector]
This time, Impossible was eliminated and helped X-Fly win.

Estrellas del Ring has an in-ring interview with the cheating winners.

CMLL’s Facebook has a short message from Satanico about his friend MS-1’s passing. Kcidis has a drawing.

CMLL’s pitching tonight’s Arena Mexico show as a double main event. In main event one (also known as the semimain), Reyes del Atlantida meet Hijos de Averno in a champions vs champions. In main event two, Generacion Dorada comes together for the first time since losing the trios title against Aguila, Volador and Psicosis in what could be a crazy high flying match.

Ovaciones talks to Atlantis, Guerrero Maya Jr., and Delta about their title defense this coming Tuesday.

El Hijo del Santo spent his Record column trashing Monterrey wrestling and Konnan Big in particular as killing the wrestling business. Konnan Big responded via video. I would bet the match with Niurka outdrew at least one, if not both of the last Todo x el Todo shows, for what it’s worth.

Skayde is coming to Chicago for a training seminar at GALLI the end of this month.

LuchaWorld has a big KrisZ’s news update.

Both the main shows appear to still be in repeat mode; CMLL was nowhere near the end of the year, and AAA was just starting Guerra de Titanes. That’s a good thing, because neither show is really going to be seen this week. CMLL has a 30 minute slot and AAA is listed for 15 minutes. AAA’s not really going to get those 15 minutes anyway. The shows are sandwhiched around the Saints/49ers NFL game. AAA is the bridge program between the NFL game and the FMF Tigres/Queretaro game. The most recent numbers I can find say NFL games are going 3 hours and 7 minutes; Televisa is more than willing of taking putting up 8 minutes of ads instead of AAA for a few minutes. The location between the two sporting events would probably mean AAA’s highest rated show in some time, but it’ll be so easy to skip that I’d be surprised if anything airs. AAA should be happy if they get a 2 minute video package on the air this week, but they should be thrilled if they can find a different network to take their programming.

Things should clear up with the NFL ramping down, but only until the next big event comes up (the Olympics? something sooner?)

52MX: back to normal shows; that’s the new look Invasors and Averno/Mephisto/Volador vs Sombra/Mascara/Panther this week.

LATV: a rerun!

CMLL-Main/Gala: more year in review that’s not really reviewing anything important?

AAA-main: doesn’t matter

FOX: Guerreros vs Atlantida and Polvora/Sagrado are in the usual spots, and they might be able to sneak on Tuareg vs Azteca/Pegasso/Cometa.

C3: A show! Cancerberos vs Dragon Lee/Pegasso/Cometa looks fun.

Mega6: Maximo vs Niebla and set up for next week’s trios champs

Puebla: Bufete del Amor vs Guerreros

Perros: on to Neza?

ACM: ????

IWRG: El Protector tournament, which surely had an experienced and steady hand leading his charge to victory

MS-1, Puebla, Guadalajara, IWL/DTU

MS-1, Pablo Fuentes Reina, passed away in a car accident. He is said to have been teaching at a wrestling school in Huamantla. MS-1 was a rudo in Arena Mexico in 80s and 90s. MS-1 spend most of his career unmasked, losing his mask to Rayo de Jalisco Jr. just four years after debuting. A few years later, he, Satanico and Espectro Jr. formed Los Infernales, a rudo trio which was sort of the answer to El Toreo’s own Misionerios de la Muerte of great rudos, as trios themselves were taking off. Espectro Jr. was replaced by Pirata Morgan, and Morgan, Satanico & MS-1 became a legendary trio. The three won the national trios titles, and reformed the team in 1990s to become the first CMLL World Trios Champions. Pirata and Satanico both left for bits in AAA, but MS-1 was the constant guy in CMLL thru multiple versions of the group. MS-1 main evented the 1983 Anniversary Show (loss to Sangre Chicana in a hair match) and the 1989 one (loss teaming with Tierra Viento y Fuego to Atlantis and a then tecnico Satanico.) As a single, MS-1 held the NWA Light Heavyweight championship twice. He traded it back and forth with Ringo Mendoza, Rayo de Jalisco and Cien Caras, so they must’ve thought highly of him. MS-1 was a hardworking wrestler who, like the rest of the Infernales, a favorite of the hardcore fan base.

MS-1 left CMLL in 1996, promoting small shows around Naucalpan with his son (MS-1 Jr.) They would occasionally give the MS-2 mask to an random indy wrestler to create a one night version of the Infernales for indy shows. He slipped away from sight a lot faster than other wrestlers of his era; his name would turn up from time to time, but he’s not a guy who’d be often seen on the legend/reunion shows. MS-1 did have one brief foray in AAA, turning up for a one show appearance in 2005, then was one of the Allien trio in 2006 (though this was never acknowledged.) MS-1’s only turns up a couple more times after that. The last time he was advertised was a 2010 show in Laguna, though I don’t know if he actually wrestled.

AAA has condolences up. CMLL is moving at CMLL speed. DJ Spectro has a short obit.

Results

CMLL (MON) 01/09/2012 Arena Puebla [Porra Fresa]
1) Black Tiger & Tigre Rojo Jr. b Ares & Sauron
Tecnicos took 1/3.
2) Pequeño Olímpico, Pequeño Violencia, Pequeño Warrior b Astral, Fantasy, Shockercito
rudos took 1/3.
3) Ángel Azteca Jr., Fuego, Sagrado b Arkángel de la Muerte, Hijo del Signo, Nitro
Fuego replaced Diamante, leaving him more time to retweet. Tecnicos took 1/3.
4) Ángel de Oro, Blue Panther, La Sombra DQ Felino, Negro Casas, Pólvora
Casas brothers jumped Panther, but Blue still snuck in the armbar on Negro for the first fall. Negro and Felino got Panther with the double armbar in the second. Negro desperately fouled Panther in the third. Panther challenged to a hair match, Negro fled.
5) Marco Corleone, Máximo, Rush b Dragón Rojo Jr., Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero
Tecnicos took 1/3 to keep their undefeated streak going.

CMLL (TUE) 01/10/2012 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Thunder Boy b Relampago Azul
2) Acertijo b El Divino
3) Disturbio & Inquisidor b Black Metal & Virgo
4) Estrellita & Marcela b Princesa Sugheit & Tiffany
Recap says Estrellita & Tiffany did everything but wrestle. Final fall saw Estrellita submit Tiffany, Sugheit submit Estrellita, and Marcela beat Sugheit.
5) Morphosis, Psicosis, Volador Jr. b Atlantis, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr.
Morphosis used that name for the first time here. Rudos took 1/3, then challenged to a trios title match next week.
6) Mr. Niebla b Máximo
Niebla took 1/3, getting the pinfall with the feet on the ropes.

indy (TUE) 01/10/2012 Arena Afición [Estrellas del Ring]
1) Alison Evans b Belém Belém
2) Skayde & XL b Hanaoka & Tetsuya
tecnicos took 1/3, Skayde beating both Japanese after Chilean XL was elimianted
3) Super Crazy & X-Fly b Drastik Boy & Henry
Henry & Drastick Boy did not get along. Perros took 1/3.

Possibly the only match of the year with Mexicans, Chileans and Japanese. Last time there was some named Tetsuya in Mexico, it was (future AJPW’s) Bushi, but I think he’s still in Japan.

Other News

Volador Jr. says Sombra is a very tough opponent, but not an impossible one. Their title match on the NJPW/CMLL show might be Volador’s first trip to Japan (it’s not), but Volador points out he traveled to the US and won the TNA World X Cup so he has experience winning outside the country, and he won the Bicentennial Cup, so he has experience winning big matches.

Tiger wants to challenge Sombra and win his world welterweight title, which would mean everyone in TRT will have world championships. Good luck on that, cat. Tiger says Rey Bucanero & Terrible have uncaged his talent, and he’s clearly doing the right thing since they’re undefeated as a group.

The authors of “¡Quiero ver sangre! Historia ilustrada del cine de Luchadores”, the new book about lucha libre in the movies, are interviewed here. There’s also a mostly positive review here. Looks like you may able to purchase it here, but don’t hold me to it.

Valerie Richter will explain X-Project Lucha Libre on Sobre el Ring this Friday. The IWL Twitter account seems to be the new X-Project Twitter account. The IWL Facebook put up X-Project stories, then took them down,  and there’s  a new IWL Oficial facebook just to make it more confusing.

Lineups

IWL DTU (SUN) 02/12/2012 Centro de Convenciones de Tlalnepantla
1) Dinastía vs Exteme Boy, Niño Hamburguesa, Hacker, Slayer Pack, ?
2) Carroña, Payaso Miedo, Payaso Terror vs Centinela, Ojo Diabólico Jr., Químico Jr.
3) Suicida & Tony Rivera vs Dark Dragon & Sugi San and Drastik Boy & Flamita
4) ATM, Carta Brava Jr., Epitafio, Sepulturero I vs Araña de Plata, Ciclope, Eterno, Pequeno Cobra
5) León Rojo, Ovett, Perico vs Demente Extreme, Demoledor, Makabre
6) Ángel o Demonio, Cerebro Negro, Fantasma de la Ópera vs Extreme Tiger, Joe Lider, Último Gladiador and ?, Aeroboy, Super Mega

This is an IWL “versus” DTU, though all the guys work all these shows and only the promotions see much off a difference. The Porros and the hardcore DTU guys haven’t appeared on the other shows, but guys like Suicida (representing IWL) have been on DTU as well.

Press conference angles also seemed to set up Violento Jack vs XL and possibly Allison Evans vs Luchadora To Be Named Later.

top six stories of the last two weeks

  1. Perros del Mal hyped a big surprise for their 01/01 show, and delivered Head Hunter I. Not a big surprise. Box Y Lucha’s cover story said Averno was actually offered the surprise spot, and turned it down. Averno, in a CMLL.com interview denied it – by saying that if he leaves, he wouldn’t be sneaky about it. Not really a denial.
  2. Hombre Bala Jr. and Super Halcon Jr. unmasked long time opening card luchadors Rayo Tapatios on New Year’s Day. The two had been a masked duo for over 20 years, always tecnicos until they started to set up this feud. This was usual CMLL practice of luchadors near the start of their career defeating those near the end of theirs.
  3. Histeria, Alebrije, and Cuije changed their names (and looks) to Morphosis, Kraneo, and Mije. The first two are said to have previously used those names. Morphosis says CMLL has asked them to change from their current (potentially AAA owned) names, but they’ll continue to use their previous names on indies and still believe they own them. Fellow Invasor Psicosis has said he has not been requested to change his name.
  4. Terrible defeated Rush to win the vacant CMLL Heavyweight Championship.
  5. NJPW’s CMLL FantasticMania lineups were announced. Sombra will defend his title versus Voldor in what might be the best match of the year. Mascara Dorada defends his title versus NJPW’s Kushida.
  6. Monterrey based wrestler Estrella Dorada Jr. was arrested on charges of kidnapping, robbery and conspiracy.
